just something I was wondering about, does elves don't have beards because they can't grow beards or because they choose not to? in a banter with fenris and varric fenris say "elves don't grow beards" and not elves can't grow beards. that of course can mean nothing but still. in a banter with solas and blackwall, blackwall say that he never met an elf with a beard to which solas say that blackwall haven't met many elves. but it's hard to say if solas was joking/teasing or being serious. and there was fenris concept art where he had stubble but it could be a design thing as a lot of elves don't wear shoes even though nothing in the lore state it's an elf thing not to wear shoes, so once again can mean nothing.

so.. yeah. just curious. ^_^

I assume it means the can't grow beards, or if they do they are very space, patchy and, ugly so, they don't - it's like that for some people in our world too.

Maybe it takes 100+ years to grow a minimal beard, and after several decades of itchy stubble, they shave due to complaints from significant other.

I thought there was a half-elf with a beard and they said it was the human side that made it grow so well?  Or is this another story/lore I'm mixing up..it could be that

Elves can't grow beards. Sheryl Chee was kind enough to drop this into the Blackwall Character thread. http://forum.bioware...9#entry18586100 (Warning: link will take you out of the safety of non-spoiler zone)

Hi.

You're not missing the banter between Solas and Blackwall about elven beardlessness because of the banter bug. It was pulled out of the banter array and made to not trigger because it actually contradicts Word of Gaider (i.e. canon).

So, what happened was I wrote a bunch of banter while tired and obviously confused about the state of elven facial hair. The banter I wrote got voiced, and then one day, just to be sure, I checked with David Gaider about elven beards. The conversation went kind of like this:

"Hey, can elves grow beards?"

"No."

"Er, really? I wrote a banter referencing elf beards."

"You should probably delete it."

"I will."

So I went off and tried to make sure that this mistake of mine would never see the light of day. Of course, people dug around in the files and found the soundclips.

I would urge you to interpret that banter as Solas trolling Blackwall.

So, Solas be trollin'.

Elves may not grow beards, but if you romance Sera you'll learn they do grow hair in...other places.

Varric makes the same hint about him not having a beard, but making it up elsewhere

I always assumed he was talking about his glorious chest hair.

I wonder if hair is one of the results of elven quickening. Solas, and the other Elven Gods (in their mosaics) are completely hairless, and the elves in the temple of Mythal seem bald as well (at least as much as their cowls let on). So, could it be that elves would develop beards in a thousand years or so?

An itchy stubble is one of the several reasons why I myself don't grow a beard. Imagine decades of itchy stubble!

Elves can't grow beards because dwarves would sue for copyright infringement if they did. Dwarves are litigious sods.

Well when it comes to keeping warm, the face is one of the less important places.

Do elves have hairy armpits? We need to know!

I wanted beards for the lady dwarves, like in Middle Earth and Discworld. Pretty beards with braids and all.

After all, the reason to play a dwarf is for THE BEARD.

I wish I could choose not to grow a beard. Willing your face hair not to grow would be so nice. Shaving gets tiresome.
