I'm considering doing a full-trilogy run where I leave pretty much everything up to chance. So every decision will be down to a flip of a coin or doll of a dice. And not just big story decisions either - I mean who I'm taking on every mission, mission order and how I respond to my squad in conversation too: pretty much everything except where to put my XP points and which sidequests I can be bothered doing. I'm thinking this will inject a lot of mystery back into the playthrough - I have no idea what Shep will be like, who s/he will befriend, romance, etc. And I'm expecting ME2's suicide mission to be a particular highlight.

 

Has anyone done a run like this? Anyone thinking this won't turn out well? Or thoughts in general?

I definitely think there's something in that idea of leaving squadmate choice to chance...

Right, time to put this into action and see what happens.

 

For this Mass Effect trilogy run, I will essentially be letting random chance shape the story as much as possible. I have no idea who will survive, who I will support and what will happen. I will only retain control over spending XP points, a veto over which sidequests to ignore (can't be dealing with the tedious fetch quests) and when my only choice in conversation is merely to continue it or end it, I MAY exercise control to continue. Other than that, all aspects of my game will be down to the roll of a dice, including mission order, companions on each mission, and my route through each conversation tree.

 

I'll be playing on Veteran because this is the first time playing the game on this PC. But that's okay because I'm more in it for the story than the combat this time anyway.

 

So, on with initial choices:

Part 1

 

Sandra (Gravity reference) Shepard began by snapping at Joker. Great - her first line and she's already falling out with Joker. What a good start... 

 

On the other hand, she scored a lot of paragon responses with others, so it seems she genuinely likes Anderson, Kaidan and Ashley. She gave the impression of being a disciplined and obedient soldier. Powell got an earful for being a lazy sciver, and Manuel got a punch in the face, but hey it was 'for his own good' apparently. Back at the Normandy after the beacon episode, Sandra praised and thanked Kaidan (could this be the start of a budding romance?) and welcomed Ashley on board. Since she's just been through her own 'Akuze', I guess Sandra sees a lot of herself in Ashley...

 

At the Citadel, Sandra charmed me completely [/sarcasm] by showing her space-racist side towards Turians. She flatly stated, both to Udina at the council chamber and to Garrus' face in Doctor Michel's clinic, that she doesn't want a Turian (ie, Garrus) on her team. I thought for a minute she'd refuse to take him completely. She eventually relented, but it was down to the very last roll. Also, while she was polite to Tali when she had her Saren evidence, Anderson had to make Sandra accept her as a crew-member, so I don't think she really likes Quarians much either. New head-cannon: Wrex (who Sandra doesn't seem to mind) goes along with Shepard after the Fist contract because she secretly hires him and his itchy trigger-finger to keep an eye on Garrus and Tali! It totally fits!

 

Fittingly, despite being given three opportunities to change her party members, Sandra chose Ashley every time (seems those two are becoming bffs. What could they possibly have in common...?), and Kaidan twice, so yay for human supremacy. I can't wait to see what Sandra has to say to the Illusive Man when she meets him.

 

Also, Sandra seems to have left quite a trail of corpses already. She killed Fist even though Wrex wasn't with her so it really was her decision, and Jahleed and Chorban's little investigation into the Keepers ended with the former in a C-Sec prison cell and the latter as a corpse on the market floor because "No-one attacks me and walks away". She also retrieved Nirali Bhatia's body for her husband by threatening to shoot the officer withholding it for military research. I think being made a Spectre put Sandra on a bit of a power trip. She also flatly refused to help the Consort Sha'ira at all; maybe keep your wandering hands to yourself next time you're asking someone for help, Lady! But on the plus side, she readily agreed to help Admiral Kahoku find his missing recon team, Garoth find his missing brother, and also helped out Emily Wong and a preppy young man called Conrad Verner. Because, y'know, human...

 

Finally, Sandra was granted her own ship, and was furious with Udina that Anderson had been sidelined by backroom politics. Her first speech to the crew as captain was full of hard truths and how 'we can't trust the council, but we don't need their help', because of course it did. When Joker said it was a speech Anderson would have been proud of, did Sandra feel bad about stepping into her friend's shoes...?

 

"I'm the captain now!"

 

Anderson who? Lolz!

 

The fate of the galaxy is apparently in the hands of its biggest troll. I can see this will be a fun ride.

Haha, this is fun. I think that's what they should have done instead of "action mode" in ME3. Instead of pre-determining certain choices, they should have just built everything on a random number generator (including all the relevant variables for ME1/2 for your Shepard). Would have been great fun to trade stories of our insane combinations of stuff we experienced on the forums + you would play the game and never know what happens next. It would have been glorious.

 

Unfortunately, I am too lazy to to do it on my own like you, Ferretinabun, but I wish you good fun on your chaos run.

Part 2

 

Before she got the mission underway Sandra decided to have a 1-on-1 with some of the crew. She was respectful with Wrex as she tried to get him to open up on the Krogan. Then she pulled Garrus up on his attitude about getting away from red tape and doing things without bureaucracy. Not on my ship, sonnyjim; I'll have no Turian loose cannons around here! She then gave Ashley a quick pep talk - Ashley was blaming herself for not being alert enough on Eden Prime. "So be more alert next time." Tough love... And when Tali told her about the Geth origins, Sandra was politely but consistently on the Geth's side. Doubt that'll stop her shooting them though.

 

Then it was off to Therum with Ash (obvs) and Wrex to pull Liara out of a sticky situation. On returning, Sandra called a crew meeting in which she had to keep Liara on track when she started waffling, but beyond that she seemed welcoming enough. However, Liara was baffled that Joker was making light of the situation with jokes. "Sometimes Joker's a real ass." Still not warmed to your pilot then, Shep? Oh dear.

 

She also decided not to send the Council her report. Who can be bothered with that when there's a galaxy of tiny, rectangular planets to drive your Mako around?

Part 3

 

Time for another crew pep-chat, only Therum really seemed to have rattled Sandra (I guess narrowly cheating death from a collapsing mine might do that to you) because she was in a bad mood. First up - a chat with Navigator Pressly. When he complained off-handedly about the non-humans on board, Sandra simply pulled rank and played the 'Don't question my decisions' card. Still not convinced she doesn't secretly agree with him though...

 

Then it was on to poor Kaidan. He tried to run his annoyance over the council past Sandra, but she just gave him a string of renegade responses, shooting him down in flames. Nicely played there, Sandra. You were on to a dead cert, but I think Kaidan's gone right off the boil for you now that he knows what a stroppy cow you can be. Good luck romancing him now! Maybe Kaidan did something specific to annoy her. Does he leave wet towels on the shower floor or leave the Normandy's toilet seat up? Suggestions welcome for off-putting habits Kaidan might have. Comment below.   

 

A quick chat with Doctor Chakwas later and then it's on to Liara. She proved not to be very broad-minded when hearing about Asari mating habits (shocker), and was a bit insensitive about Benezia ("Maybe she's just a power-hungry b**ch?") but she did assure Liara that she trusted her, which came so far out of left field that I suspected immediately it was a total lie.

 

Then Garrus, to learn a little more about his father, and warn him once again to play by the rules. Then to Ash: firstly for a ****** about Liara where Sandra completely agreed about not trusting her (I knew it!), and then the conversation I've been waiting for - the racism one. It didn't exactly go the way I planned (agreeing with everything Ashley said and then doing each other's hair), but she didn't really shoot Ashley down either. She gently insisted the non-humans were their allies, but ended with "I can see your point" so she's clearly sympathetic to Ashley's racist side. Oh, and ended with a classy joke "You say 'Kiss a Turian', I say 'Which cheek?'" "Kiss a Turian? I don't think that'll be necessary." (Taking bets on an ME2 Garrus romance...) So I'm basically taking it that either Sandra's racism is casual rather than ideological, or that she just specifically doesn't like Turians. I mean she doesn't really seem to trust Liara or care for Tali either, but she's okay with Wrex, I guess...

 

Wrex gave her the story of his first run-in with Saren, and she rapped his knuckles for not telling her earlier. And when poor Tali tried to open up about feeling sad, Sandra didn't even hear her out and just walked off instead. Sandra Shepard: Intergalactic Agony Aunt. 

 

After a brief pit-stop to take care of UNC: Distress Call (with Kaidan and Garrus: Sandra's first mission without Ashley...) It was off to Noveria. Again, Ashley and Kaidan were there to make up Team Humanity.

 

She stormed through Noveria pretty much like a bullet train, determined not to be side-tracked. She neither helped nor reported the smuggling Hannar, she wouldn't even hear out Mallene Calis in the bar, and she didn't bat an eyelid about shooting her way through the mercs in Lorik Qui'in's office. After Parasini's big reveal, she failed to convince Qui'in to testify, so she just gave him the discs for his pass. Sorry Noveria - you'll just have to live with your corrupt Salarian for the time being: I've got a crazy Asari matriarch to stop.

 

Peak 15, by the book. Rift Station all went well too (ie, the version where you DON'T have to kill Ventralis and all the scientists there). She dealt with Benezia, and then it was time for the Rachni queen. Predictably, Ash was for killing it and Kaidan for saving it. Initially Sandra said she'd spare the queen, but Ash made a last ditch appeal to her xenophobia and changed her mind. Well don't you just have Shepard wrapped around your little finger, Ashley?

 

The Rachni Queen died.

I've been doing the random Shepard as well, also did random rolls for all the appearance options in ME1. Was expecting some weird look, but actually became pretty normal.

 

Ended up with a Femshep Infiltrator. Finished ME1 & 2. Still need to get her through ME3. The playthrough took a break on Sur'Kesh for some random reason.

Part 4

 

Back on the Normandy after the Noveria mission, Sandra surprisingly defended Liara when Ashley jumped down her throat, but also smoothed things over with her when she immediately apologised. "It's okay, we're all on edge." Don't you go round picking on people just because they're aliens on my ship, lady. Unless they're Turians, obvs. She also kept her cool when she made her report to the Council.

 

Pep-talk time again, and she seemed to be in a much better mood with Kaidan. Whatever foul he'd committed to annoy her before had presumably been forgiven. She even even complimented him as 'a great pupil' when he told her the story of Jump Zero. But if it was an attempt at flirting, I think she's missed the boat - Kaidan's gone off you already, love.

 

Chatting with Liara, she was at least sensitive when discussing Benezia. But when the conversation turned to Liara's life as an archaeologist, Sandra returned to her usual unsociable self when she called it lonely, dull and warned her off studying her. Garrus told her about Dr Saleon, and surprisingly Sandra agreed when he explained his frustration about missing his chance to take him down. Is Sandra coming round to Garrus' renegade way of thinking?

 

Her chat with Ashley was a little schizophrenic. While she asked Ash about her family, and they bonded over being the kids of military parents, she also pulled Ashley up about being too casual around her, called her poetry boring and told her to keep her religious views to herself when she revealed she believed in God. I think it was because she interrupted Ashley's sister teasing her about fancying Kaidan (possibly). Could Sandra be feeling threatened here? Still carrying a torch for Kaidan? En garde, b**ch... She also got the story of Wrex's father and family armour out of him, as well as finally chatting to Tali like a decent person. Looks like Sandra's finally getting used to having a Quarian around the place.

 

Still rattled by the tales of genetic tinkering, Sandra decided to deal with Dr Saleon immediately. When she fought her way through to the doctor himself, she completely trolled Garrus by stealing his kill and saying it was a lesson: "Never hesitate when you have your enemy in your sights." Low blow, Sandra - that's in the Multiplayer Gaming Handbook #101 - kill stealing is bad, bad manners!

 

Then she got sidetracked by a personal mission of her own - Hackett patched through a message about scientists from Akuze being picked off by a vigilante gunman. When she got to the bottom of it and confronted her old buddy Corporal Toombs, she heard him out, and then couldn't deny him the chance for revenge. She let him kill the last of the scientists - and then himself. So much for the rulebook. Seems like Garrus is rubbing off on Sandra - when it's personal, vigilantism is just dandy.

 

Then time for a return to the Citadel. She got accosted by Admiral Mikhailovich, who she showed the Normandy off to. She made him back down when he complained about the layout, but agreed the ship was expensive and just kept a poker face when he complained about aliens on the ship. She gave Al-Jilani half an interview, defending her human-cred and then cutting her off curtly (but not violently) when the questions got too personal. She agreed to help an Asari diplomat rescue her sister, freed a barmaid being used as a C-Sec pawn by making an important drop in her place, bugged the travel docks for Emily Wong, and convinced a C-Sec officer to allow a 'stupid jellyfish' to preach without a permit. On the other hand, she also blanked a Salarian who got kicked out of Flux, told her fan Conrad Verner to take a running jump, and stumbled across a man who claimed to be an old friend of her mother. When he asked for $20, she said she didn't have that much. So I checked her account - she had over $157,000.

Part 5

 

Back on the Normandy Sandra touched base with her mother about her old friend and then headed out to deal with a bunch of biotics who had taken a politician hostage. Her gung-ho ways backfired and the chairman was killed when Sandra charged in guns blazing. Whoops. Diplomacy doesn't seem to be one of Sandra's strong suits. She also headed out to learn to fate of Kahoku's marines and killed her first Thresher Maw.

 

Then it was off to Virmire to deal with Saren's Krogan army. When Wrex learned of the plan to destroy the genophage cure and went to blow off a few rounds to calm down, Sandra assured everyone that she'd calm him down. Unfortunately her negotiation skills lived up to her terrible record thus far. When she failed to talk him down, Ashley stepped in and killed him on the spot. Sandra coolly took it all in her stride, neither thanking nor reprimanding Ashley, and when Kirrahe asked what to do with the body, she told him to simply dump it: Wrex was out of line and Ashley did her job.

 

Out of interest, is anyone NOT hating Sandra right now?

 

She sent Ashley off with the Salarians and continued on with Kaidan and Garrus in tow as the shadow team.

 

She managed to clear out all the obstructions on the way to the facility and dealt with the room full of Geth rather than leave it to Ashley and the Salarians to deal with, so at least Kirrahe's team had an easy ride of it. She also showed a little mercy to others she encountered - freeing the captive Salarian in the cells and telling Saren's Asari Rana Thanoptis to run while she had the chance.

 

Her meeting with Sovereign done, Kaidan set the nuke while Sandra went off to collect Ashley. This is the first time Sandra had ever brought Tali along in the squad. After two and a half hub missions, a return trip to the Citadel and six side missions, the Quarian had never actually seen any action. Sandra was obviously totally disinterested in her, and taking her here was obviously out of pure necessity since half of Sandra's squad was now busy setting nukes, accompanying Salarians or being dead! (Clearly Liara had some kind of panic attack or some such reason why she had to stay in the Normandy, which left Sandra with absolutely no other choice.) But, Tali fans rejoice, as she did herself proud on the battlefield. Maybe the techy engineer is more worthy that she looks...

 

And then The Choice. Now, as a rule I am a die-hard Kaidan-saver. Though I don't dislike Ashley's personality, I like Kaidan's more, he is far more useful in combat in both ME1 and ME3, I dislike Ashley's ME3 incarnation more than Kaidan's, and I think the story just makes more sense with Ashley being the escort, Kaidan being the bomb-setter, and then at the critical time, Shepard doubling back to make sure the Geth don't deactivate the nuke. However, I simply loved Sandra's relationship with Ashley this playthrough. They have a lot in common - even if they don't always see eye-to-eye. Kaidan was just simply a crush for Sandra that she'd already scuppered. So even as I was rolling on who to save I was muttering "Please be Ashley, please be Ashley..."

 

It was Kaidan.

 

I guess the ghost of Wrex was reaping his revenge through the dice. Sandra must have thought as I did - that the bomb is the top priority, so it was essential to save that and leave her best friend to die. Her "I'm sorry Ash" felt very poignant.

 

That scene has never been so difficult.

Part 6

 

If there was a silver-lining to Ashley's death it's probably that Sandra seemed to bond with Joker in grief. Until now, she had never been anything other than humourless and hostile to him, but when the Council started getting up her nose when she reported in, Joker acted as co-conspirator and cut the line. Sorrynotsorry there, guys. She spoke with him one-on-one and they actually had a moment of camaraderie over losing Ashley. I'm hoping this is Sandra warming to Joker, and this will last when he's back to his wise-cracking self again.

 

Sandra was also open and sympathetic to Kaidan about Ashley. Don't think it'll help you get into his pants though, Sandra. Speaking of which, Liara had her first confession of attraction conversation - though God knows what brought that on. Hilariously, Sandra shot her down saying she has feelings for Kaidan. Sandra Shepard is destined to be Taylor Swift in Space.

 

Finding Kirrahe on the poignantly empty lower deck was bittersweet. Sandra clearly blames him. "Keep your respects - I'd rather have Ashley." she snapped when he offered his regards. Catty and rude, yet kinda touching. Garrus questioned her on how they'd treat Saren when they catch him, and Sandra surprisingly insisted killing him would be a last resort only. Based on what she's said and done so far I think it's more likely she's just worried about keeping Garrus in line and making sure he doesn't steal her kill. Will you EVER trust Garrus, Sandra?

 

She also had a friendly chat with Tali, and brought her along when she went to sort out the rogue VI on the Moon. You've got to admit, the girl knows how to handle synthetics. (I got Commando over Operative, which I was hoping for.) And when Sandra brought Tali along on 4 of the 5 planets to stop a suspected Geth invasion, it was clear Tali had earned her spurs. Yet when she asked for a copy of the Geth data files for her pilgrimage, Sandra still refused. Always the troll...

 

After a pitstop to rescue kill the Asari diplomat's sister, it was off to help kill the colonists on Feros. In fairness, Sandra initally did everything she could to help the people of Zhu's Hope, but when she found out they were being mind-controlled she suddenly decided her stun grenades were too precious to waste and ordered her squad to shoot to kill. Colonists saved: 1 (must've missed someone, somewhere). She did allow Sha'ala to stay and help the colonists who escaped the attacks by the Geth, the Thorian and Shepard's hit-squad, so... small mercies I suppose.

 

And then it was back to the Citadel to get benched. Lord knows it's a special talent to get through the game without Liara ninja-mancing you, yet somehow Sandra got to the 'kiss' scene completely alone. Hear that, Sandra? Alone. You might want to reflect on that. And just in case we'd forgotten why, Sandra showcased her least likable traits when she confronted the Asari diplomat and seemed more concerned with being paid than anything else, and then promised her vote to the Terra Ferma candidate soliciting votes in the Wards, actually telling Garrus to 'stay out of this' when he objected to their racist politics. Which is when it struck me that poor Garrus really doesn't have much option about being Shepard's buddy. No matter how obnoxious you are to him, he'll never tell you you're an ass. Because if ever there was a Shepard Garrus needed to say it to, Sandra would be it.

 

She took her least favourite crew - Tali and Garrus - with her to Ilos (presumably figuring they might mutiny and steal the ship if she left them alone on it), so when it got down to the Saren fight, Sandra had precisely no biotic abilities to fall back on at all. Dammit. It was only Veteran, but I've had much easier Saren fights on Nightmare with a biotic-heavy squad.

 

I'm sure no-one will be surprised to hear that Sandra let the Council die - actually telling Anderson and Udina it was a calculated move because they were in their way. Although, to her credit, she did balk at Udina's suggestion for a human-only council, insisting that the galaxy must be united to stop the Reapers, so maybe Sandra really sees herself more as a 'human rights advocate' than as a 'human supremacist'. Sandra then nominates Anderson as the human chairman, and then walks off into a distinctly red background, secure in the belief that her actions will never be retconned...

 

Then again, looking back on her service record, maybe a few more of her actions SHOULD have been retconned for everyone's sake.

I'm interested to see how Sandra turns out in ME2. Partly because I think that ME1 characters evolve differently compared to ME2. ME2 and ME1 Renegades are two different characters

After you finish this, will you go for another chaos run? Might be interesting to see how different will the next one be

It's tempting. This has really given me a taste for it.

 

But if I do, I'm not sure I'll write it up as posts here again. They're rather more time-consuming than I'd anticipated - especially as I'm anxious to keep them entertaining (long enough to be interesting and give a good feel of what happened, but not so long as to be tedious).

 

But the beauty of a chaos run, of course, is that anyone can do one. Anyone else is more than welcome to post their own chaos run here, and maybe compare and contrast. In fact, I'd recommend it.

Balak left while Shepard saved the hostages.

Zhu's Hope and Shiala survived with a few casualties.

Spoke to mom, told Zabaleta to go to the VAO.

Gave Emily Wong the data from Fist, then told her not to spy on Traffic controls.

Let the Alliance keep Nirali Bhatia's body.

Agreed to help Gianna Parasini, and convinced Lorik to help.

Chairman Burns died together with the terrorists.

Helped Sha'ira. Did not go to Eletania.

Told krogan to stop messing with Dr. Michel.

Accepted Helena Blake's money.

Killed Nassana's sister without speaking to Nassana first.

Never met Han Olar.

Gave Khalisah al-Jilani a decent interview.

Intimidated Ethan Jeong.

Told Keeler to get help with his drug addiction.

Major Kyle came along peacefully.

Convinced hanar Preacher to leave.

 

All in all it would seem like Shepard ended up fairly paragon without wasting too much time on saving the galaxy.

I just have to say thank you for doing this and reporting back. I was grinning the whole way through and it has made me determined to do one myself. I will echo others who have said you have a great writing style. It's funny and insightful.... and more importantly concise! So easy to read. Also, know this is high praise from me. When someone asks me to read something they've written, I usually flat-out refuse. Reading amateur-hour crap and having to give "honest" feed-back is a personal form of torture for me.

 

Would you mind sharing your methodology in more depth? For example, how the dice controls the dialogue wheel. They're not numbered options are they? And did you give every squadmate a number or was it a process of elimination?

Most conversations are split into three responses, so I went 1&2 = top, 3&4 = middle, 5&6 = bottom. Sometimes you are given more options, but the dialogue wheel has six positions, so I just assigned a number to each position and re-rolled if I got a number that was blank or I had asked before. There are also six squadmates, so I assigned them 1-6 starting from the left as they appear on the character selection screen and rerolled if necessary.

 

If I was choosing from more than six options (such as picking a mission), I split the options into groups and used a dice roll to pick the group first (eg, 'On a roll of 1-3 I'll pick one of these 4 missions, but on a roll of 4-6 I'll pick one of these 4" - and then rolling for the specific mission).

 

Also, there are QTEs in 2 and 3. For these, I simply had a pre-rolled listed of yeses and noes as to whether I would perform them, and ticked them off as I went.

You've inspired me to give it a go myself. I think the only real difference from your method was that I decided to roll on the side quests as they came in, and either did them immediately or not at all. Anyway, here's part 1 of my run:

 

The result of Bav’s harsh upbringing on Earth showed through almost straight away. Jenkins was shot, but she didn’t spare a minute to grieve. When back from Eden Prime, she showed no emotion about Jenkin’s death, shutting down both Kaidan and Ashley when they tried to talk about it. Unfeeling, or just unwilling to show her emotions?

 

On the Citadel, it quickly became evident that Bav does not trust outsiders. She told Ashley she needed to earn her place, was reluctant to take Garrus (but eventually relented telling him she’d be watching him), and decided she needed no help from Wrex when confronting Fist. Bav definitely has a ruthless streak in her, taking the decision to shoot Fist. Not entirely sure that her choices so far the actions of a war hero, I’m starting to suspect whatever went on in Elysium was either a fluke or Bav hadn’t been completely honest to Alliance brass about what went down. Either that or she’s been  completely emotionally scarred from the experience.

 

The only new team member Bav welcomed was Tali, but she was eventually persuaded to take Wrex after meeting him outside the elevator to the docking bay. This did go down to the last roll. Back on the Normandy, a budding romance was developing between Kaidan and her, with Bav taking the Paragon response throughout the conversation. Her initial mistrust of Garrus also seemed to be fading, and she took Kaidan & Garrus on her first mission to Noveria.

 

Bav initially seemed quite keen to help out Gianna on Noveria, but then very quickly backed down as soon as Qui’in said no. She convinced the scientists to give her access to Matriach Benezia, who she quickly dispatched. Bav showed very little interest in the Rachni Queen, I think after killing Benezia she just wanted to get off Noveria. Kaidan pointed out that humanity had nothing to do with the Rachni, and Bav agreed – letting the Rachni Queen go without asking a single question. What does it matter to Bav if the Queen goes on a rampage against those that wronged her? 

 

Bav was completely uninterested in talking to the Council to justify her decision, and told Joker not to bother patching in the Council. Kaidan made a huge mistake in questioning Bav’s decisions, she took great offence and told him not to question her. I think this might be the end of whatever attraction there was between them…

Next stop for the Normandy was to rescue Liara, and this time Bav took along Ash and Garrus. Once Liara was back on the Normandy, Bav was pretty friendly toward her – maybe it’s just the male aliens she is distrustful of.

 

Once again Bav decided to ignore Joker’s request for a chat with the Council. Saren’s only a threat to all life across the galaxy – why would the Council need to be kept informed? She did end up having to speak to them, but only so they could give her a lead on Virmire. Not one to be told what to do, Bav decided to ignore their advice and instead headed off to Feros.

 

On Feros Bav was feeling pretty charitable, and along with Garrus & Kaidan she helped them out with their Geth problem in the tunnels, as well as with the water and food. The colony was left in the dark, with Bav deciding not to help them with the power. I think that was as nice as Bav gets - over at Exogeni she drove straight past the colonists hiding in the underpass. After taking the Geth out, she did go after Lizbeth but wanted the situation resolved quickly, and shot Jeong despite having the option to talk him down.

 

Bav was initially convinced to take the indoctrinated colonists out with the nerve gas, but she was feeling less friendly after her encounter with the Thorian Creeper. Garrus reminded her of the nerve gas, and reluctantly she decided to use it – but reminded them not to take any chances. She killed just under half of the colonists (once the grenades were gone she wasn’t going to risk any close combat to knock them out).

 

After defeating the Thorium, Bav once again showed she isn’t someone who forgives people their mistakes and she shot Shiala rather than let her go. I don't think Bav has let a single person go when given the option. Joker asked Bav if she wanted to talk to the council, but again she decided it wasn’t worth her time. I’m guessing by this point the Council were regretting giving her Spectre status, Bav answers to no one.

Bav sees her crew as simply a means to an end. She got bored very quickly of talking to Ashley, shutting down the conversation as soon as she started talking about her family. She was a little more accommodating with Garrus, letting him talk but not supporting or condoning his actions with Dr Saleon. Ultimately Bav decided helping him out would be a waste of her time. Relations with Liara weren’t any better, calling her obsessed for digging into her past. The only person on the Normandy Bav seems to get on well with is Tali.

 

So far Bav has turned down nearly every side mission she had been offered, but she jumped the chance to help out Admiral Hackett and the Alliance on the moon (and by extension delay having to take the council’s advice to go to Virmire).

 

Finally she had no choice left but to go along to Virmire. Garrus and Tali came along on the mission. I knew Virmire was going to be the hardest part of the chaos run for me, and not because of the Kaidan & Ashley choice. Bav hasn’t taken Wrex out on any missions, and so I wasn’t feeling like things were looking too good for my favourite Krogan.

 

Bav initially tried to sympathise with Wrex, but the second he started questioning her command she insisted that he fell in line (Bav doesn’t take anyone second guessing her orders well). And so it came to the roll for Wrex’s fate. This was the first time in the whole run where I desperately wanted to roll again. Bav not only decided not to take the opportunity to talk Wrex down, but didn’t even have the courage to shoot him herself. Wrex drew his gun, and Bav immediately signalled to Ashley to shoot him in the back. Goodbye Wrex, you deserved better L

 

Bav chose Ashley to arm the nuke, and sent Kaidan off with the Salarians. I wasn’t particularly bothered about who survived out of the two, I don’t feel Bav has particularly connected with either of them. Kaidan was saved, with Ashley left to look after the nuke by herself. True to form, Bav was cold in the face of a crewmate’s death, simply telling Ashley to ‘die proud’. She didn’t try to comfort Kaidan in the debrief on the Normandy, telling him not to question her orders (well we all know how that turned out for Wrex)

 

Joker asked her again if Bav wanted to patch in the council, and she said no telling him ‘they won’t listen anyway’. Sure Bav, because you’ve given them every opportunity to listen to you so far…

 

All that was left for Bav now was to head back over to the Citadel, and unsurprisingly the Council decided not to support the Spectre who hadn’t even given them the courtesy of a single phone call since leaving to track down Saren. In the end, Bav asked Anderson to take out Udina so she could escape on the Normandy. Bav had absolutely no interest in talking to Vigil on Ilos, asking minimal questions and chastising Liara for suggesting she take an opportunity of a lifetime to talk to the beacon.

 

Bav made the surprising choice of deciding to save the Council. Last minute guilt for not bothering to speak to them? Whatever the reason, she still didn’t care enough to make a choice on whether Anderson or Udina should be the first human councillor – I guess it makes no difference to her whose calls she decides not to take.
