The included campaign was nothing special, the toolset and MP/Persistant world factor with a live DM makes it #1 for me.

 

Planescape Torment is certainly right up there.

Sorry, can't remember the impact of that generator's explosions...

I started with Civ 2, but it was inferior in most aspects to Civ 3. It was Civ 3 that made the franchise awesome.

There was also an alternative Civ 2 with shinier graphics that was really cool to look at.
