Loved that map. just out of curiosity do you now if blowing up the shield generators actually did anything?.

I believe it destroyed the command post there, but it's been a while.

Yeah. The Hoth generator was a killable CP. More importantly, though, killing the generator shut up the Imperial officer who kept bugging you about killing the generator. What an obnoxious jerk.

Ridiculous question IMO. it's one thing to say GOTY, another to say your "top ten" or whatever that thread was a week or so back, but of all time? (OF ALL TIME!)

First off, we have no way of knowing if a new game will come in and blow something away. Second, there are games that are outstanding, the absolute pinnacle of their kind, but they really aren't comparable. Myst and Final Fantasy 13 aren't really comparable. Call of Duty and SimCity 4 aren't really comparable.

Games can be magnificent in ways that are completely unique, and there can be multiple that all have a different but equally strong impact on a person.

Implying that one should be held accountable for what they consider the best games of all time? It's like if I'm saying that my favorite food is pizza, then supposedly we are to assume the table catches you every single time, forcing you to like that and only that particular food. You're free to switch any time, no one is gonna sue you about it. First it's pizza, next week it's most likely lasagne.

It's no different in this case. People will always add new games to their preference list, that is to say compiling them with the others, or change their minds about old games that might not even hold up.. Ultimately, they are the boss of their preferences.

I have no idea what you're trying to say. I get that you might change your mind, and if that was your point I'd acquiesce, but it's clear you're making some other point, some other point that I'm not getting.

You're implying that by declaring something as "Best Games of All Time" then you're to be held accountable for saying as such, when in fact that it is no different than making a top 10 of 'whatever', who's your favorite band, favorite genre of music etc or appoint something as your 'favorite food' as opinions arbitrarily change, whether it be at the fault of nostalgia. Sometimes it doesn't.. but something like "Best Games of All Time" doesn't have to be narrowed down to just 5 or 10 games. Heck, I think I'm a bit bewildered here too. What I don't get is why it's such a problem for you.

I don't know what you mean by "held accountable." If you're simply saying that opinions can change (which you've repeated) then I can understand and accept that.

Well aren't you being held accountable? Otherwise why would you try to avoid granting an answer? Another example could be.

If someone were to ask the average person. "What's your favorite food?" then I'd like to bet a lot of people would give an answer along the lines of "D'aaaaw, hmm, well there's a lot of food that's tasty". Missing the point as the answer we are seeking is the person's absolute favorite and not attempts at avoiding the question. If they don't think they are being held accountable for appointing their favorite thing, and as soon as they say it, then say something else next time then someone is gonna lecture them on it, then they wouldn't see a need to dodge the question in the first place, no? If you realize that saying "this game" is the best of all time, but 5 years from now it's something else, or other games, then you wouldn't be afraid of saying as such.

Anyway, I don't get you sometimes either, EternallyAcentric.

I think I understand a bit more now. I find myself on the opposite side--I would hesitate to call something the best of call time simply because it might change.

Though that's not my only reasoning, I do have my second point--different games are truly great for different reasons, and it's hard (for me at least) to give an objective "all the feels is better than a deep and complex citybuilder because it is."

Perhaps you just have a different interpretation for what applies to "Best of all time"? The thing is that no game is perfect, we all know that and there's always something a game can do better, but that doesn't stop anyone from appointing their favorite thing. I like to think that people who declare certain games as "Best of all Time" do so because it's a game keeps bringing them back. Even if new games come and go should to shoulder, and leave a mark on us, it doesn't mean they have to shove the previous ones aside. The way I see it is that "Best of all Time" is essentially just games I hold above the rest, the rest being ones I've enjoyed a lot, but don't see myself playing again. Although, like you said, there are always several reasons for why a game is good, which is why it's fun to make these lists in the first place, I think.

That's something I was thinking about. There are games that I think very highly of though I can't particularly say I'd be that interested in returning to them. Bioshock Infinite for one. I've talked about it before--it's the most atmospheric game I've ever seen, the plot is the most intricately crafted I've ever seen. Now, the plot definitely has logical leaps that are quite unacceptable, but that doesn't change the fact that, I'll repeat myself, the entirety of the plot was being molded from literally the very first conversation.

But I have very little desire to play again, because I don't particularly enjoy the combat. I don't care that much for FPSes, and I don't care for scary games (Infinite doesn't do that part much, but--that insane asylum anyone? That moment after you release the doors or whatever, and turn arou--!!!!!!! I'll admit I yelped IRL). I think extremely highly of the game because of the care taken in developing both the atmosphere and the plot, but the gameplay really is not desirable at all.

It's something I can do once and appreciate, without feeling a need to return to it again. While there are games like SimCity 4 that have no feeling at all but are some of the most engaging and complex games I've encountered, games where you can spend 50 hours on it and not even be close to achieving the end goal, to delicately balancing all the different factors. But again, there's no feeling to it, so it's not going to have near as much of an impact on me. It pervades rather than punctures.
