What is this I'm hearing about people giving a modder crap for making a Cassandra female romance mod?

Pewdiepie's fandom is really really bad.

We still have to go a loooooong way before we got to that point.

Could you give a couple examples?

I just love to hear fandom horror stories.  :P

i've told my husband some stories about what goes on in this fandom, including this latest one and he always just shakes his head and comments on how bad the whole fandom seems to be.  i always try to defend it but honestly, i'm beginning to wonder why :/  there are the trolls, but they're easy to deal with.  it's the people who are genuinely so full of hatred and vitriol, it can be disheartening.  there are bad eggs everywhere though, as well as the good ones.

True! There are definitely some lovely people out there, I won't deny that. :) It just baffles me how much people concern themselves with how other people play their game.

You don't to interact with the fandom to play, love, hate or even learn about the game. I didn't when Dragon Age 2 and Mass Effect 3 were out. I think that was a good move on my part. I hear the debates back then were legendary clashes of word, wit, hyperbole and verbal abuse.

Obviously. :) I usually stay clear from these kind of discussions. However, I do love to interact with fellow players about certain aspects of the game, so I still stick around.

Why?

I love the schadenfreude in this fandom.

I think some things are weightier than others. In context, there are less issues with this mod than one that might do the same for Dorian or Sera, considering "straight erasure" only exists insofar as they are a couple of words with definitions. Certainly less issues than one that might whitewash Viv or Isabela.

Personally, I think there's no legetimate reasons for someone to believe that he can change the sexuality of a straight character while pretending that someone else can't do the same with a character he likes and who happens to be gay. Most likely if both of them decide to retcon a character they love, his sexuality and who he / she is, that's because they want to experience something else, believe something else. That's the thing. The fact that straight / gay erasure doesn't really exists or not, will hardly come to the mind of the player who just wants have fun in his game, far away from politics.

A queer woman wants to believe that Cassandra doesnt turn her down and is lesbian or bisexual instead ? That's the same thing with a straight guy who wishes to believe that Sera is straight or bisexual. It's all personal and nobody is going to look at the bigger picture for his personal enjoyment. In those two examples, they both want to experience another personal adventure from the artistic and legal content. The history doesn't change anything.

I am myself consistent. I would personally never turn a white character into a black character because he is better that way to me, and it's the same issue as whitewashing a black character because he is better that way. If someone is only having fun and messing around, okay ( i'm still meh ), but if it's because he can't stand his original appeareance because of his skin, it's still wrong regardless of the the color of the character to me.

You can't believe that you are morally superior and give moralistic lessons to others when you are doing the same thing. You have to be consistent, otherwise it isn't going to work, and you aren't going to convince anyone, it's just a moral posture, hypocrisy. Like I said, I'm not really comfortable with what I consider a bit a double standard.

I do understand why some might feel some things are weigthier, but my brain can't agree with this logic. You say " people are allowed to do whatever the hell they want in their game " when it's about one mod ? Then I'd hope to see the same words used when the same mod appears with another character, even if he happens to be gay.

I can't speak for everyone but for some it's not what they do in their game just the mod itself

My apologies for misunderstanding you then.  I don't care how people mod their game but there are a great many people who will expect the writers to incorporate their personal headcanons in the game

No Problem I agree about folks modding their games it wont effect me what so ever I think some of the Romance Mods are awesome though you best believe had I been Playing ME3 on PC I would have used some like the Male Shepard/Traynor one oh it true its damn true lol.

Honestly, I am getting really sick and tired of this fandom.

David Gaider did so, too. In the old Bioware forum, there were some users who engaged in a virulent argument with him, for no reason other than "to prove they were right".

This is why he created a Tumblr (The Bittersweetest Thing, shut down a few days ago, unfortunately): to directly engage with the fans who were mistreated in the fandom.

Which kinda proves a point: it's best not to be afilliated with any fandom. Just play the games and enjoy yourself.

Did not hear about this but if it's true (that people are giving **** to the modder for making a mod) then those people need to chill out or gtfo themselves. It's a game character and everyone is free to view the character the way they like. No one, not even the writers have a monopoly on the character once they've written the story, made the game and sold it off. Just like fanfiction. If I want to write a fanfic about Jamie Lannister being homosexual no one has the right to stop me unless I make money out of it.

Edit:

Just to clarify I understand that people might not agree with another person's views, or get so involved in a character that they personally begin to have strong feelings about anything done to the character, but seriously, if you don't like what you see look away. The Internet is a public place and everyone is free to publish their own content.

Actually they do.

That's exactly the reason why ff.net doesn't allow Anne Rice fanfiction on their site because she sued their asses.

Most creators simply don't care about or tolerate fanfiction/works as long as there are no profits being made but that doesn't mean they couldn't order you to Cease & Desist or sue you if they felt like it.

I'll admit that the whining some guys did about Traynor being unavailable for M!Shep used to annoy me when she was literally the only female romance that wasn't an option to him, they were spoiled for choice & didn't need yet another woman to join in on wanting to bang him

I just love to hear fandom horror stories.  :P

I'm afraid it's been a long time ago since I interacted with "The Bro Army" so I don't have any delicious stories.

I do remember watching a guy playing through Amnesia and the first upvoted comment ont the video was something along the lines of

"Pewdiepie has played this game first so you can't play this game, disliked!"

Mind you this is the fandom that belongs to the most popular person on youtube

In all honestly though, comparing someone or something to the thought police should count as a breaking of Godwin's Law.

It's way overused.

The reason it's starting to see overuse is because of this new mindset of "I don't like something, I don't want it and you shouldn't have it either" that's beginning to take root in society. This is the problem of an inflated sense of self-importance and a lack of desire to effect meaningful problems, which is a greater but off-topic issue.

Though I can see why you think that, and will attempt to refrain from using it wildly.

Perhaps, but I still fail to see how the existence of these mods is affecting others (or should be, because apparently it is affecting others). I mean, the majority of people who use them only want to romance a certain character, which they otherwise couldn't (or wouldn't, because they didn't want to play a different gender/race).

I just love the term "gay agenda". It might as have the same infamy as the Stonemasons or the Illuminati.

I certainly hope that's true. I hope BioWare including a transgender character in their games doesn't being a trend, or worse, a slippery slope. And since BioWare has frankly not done an overwhelmingly good job of having likeable, competent, masculine male love interests in their games, Garrus being the very impressive exception, I wouldn't want to see one or two of them being gay every time.

'Masculine male' sounds kind of unpleasant to say. Whatever.

A sexuality changing mod? Woah, This has NEVER happened in a Bioware game before! *Rants*
