Is just a general insult now, used to used on people who used social issues as an excuse to be rude a-holes but now all you have to say is something as little as "I think gay people & women should be treated respectfully in the gaming industry" & you'd likely get attacked as "SJW scum"

 

If the thought were worded as harmlessly and vaguely as that, I doubt anyone would object. Nobody in any developed country would normally be against equality, but SJWs don't preach equality. They want [insert chosen minority] to be treated BETTER THAN [insert chosen majority], because they're special snowflakes who feel victimized because they aren't being pandered to. You can tell a legitimate activist from an SJW because the SJW will take no real-world action to promote what they preach, and they'll resort to hostile reactions to people calling them out on their BS.

Fascinating, in principle it sounds like something i should support, but nothing about this thread suggests the kind of behaviour I would think of in terms of social activism.

Like with everything else, you'll get extremists who will take a reasonable concept to well, extreme lengths. The SJWs, the way they're invoked on the intraweb forums, tend to be what the straw feminists are to actual feminists, except there actually are some individuals who act like these exaggerated stereotypes.

Overall though, like someone else noted, the term gets thrown around a lot now, and you'll see people branded with it for the slightest perceived "offense" towards the status quo. Some will also use it for themselves, since they focus more on the concept itself being worthy of support and nothing to be ashamed of.

Stories aren't real life, and fictional characters aren't real people from the real-world perspective. If you make a mod that changes something significant about a character, you're doing nothing more than writing a different version of the story. Fanfic writers do it all the time.

 

As I said earlier, the only one who can justifiedly complain is the original writer.

I remember when Dragon Age 2 came out; within some months a mod was made which made Isabella White. Needless to say BSN began to cry about how racist it was, and what a despicable human being could do something like that. How it took some sort of identity away from the character, etc. etc. etc.  Now when a modder gets **** on for something the vast majority of BSN would like to change in a character, they’re in full defense-mode.

This situation is no different overall from back then -- with "white Isabela" mods there were similarly those who would tell others "if you don't like it, don't use it". And the same argument about changing the nature of the character is being done in this case.

It comes down mostly to how the concerns are expressed, not that there's any at all.
