What is this I'm hearing about people giving a modder crap for making a Cassandra female romance mod?

As much as I'd love to romance Blackwall with a male character, I wouldn't download the mod because I find it kind of distasteful to change the character just to have my way with him.  However, I'm a giant hypocrite because I have no problem with slash fan works that feature Blackwall.  I haven't yet ascertained why that may be though.

For people who are as confused as me by some of the posts here:

http://www.veilfire....own-by-creator/

Highlights:

"Opponents to the Bi Cassandra mod had a variety of complaints, stating that:

It didn’t mesh well with her Chantry leanings,

That it contributed to a “straight erasure” in the game, in which straight characters were no longer acceptable,

and that it took away from Cassandra’s choice."

I would think only the last complaint would have any thing to do with 'social justice waririors'. Most of the controversy seems to emanate from the more social conservative gamers. My guess is probably the same people in this thread complaining about political correctness or 'sjw' bullying --i cause blaming the victim of bulling is what bullies do. Or maybe they just don't understand any of the facts here..

It's funny because none of these things were said at all, aside from one or two people. Never were any of these 3 ideas taken by opponents of the mod with merit. The most common complaint is that it's jarring and awkward, since the Inquisitor becomes silent and Cassandra refers to the Inquisitor with male pronouns.

But no, we're complaining about straight erasure and Chantry leanings.

Remember when video games were made for fun and people modded just for fun? Now everything must be turned into a social and political issues because if offends peoples sensibilities.

So what? I want the right to speak my mind. Freedom of expression >>> your feelings, every time.

People telling you you're an ******* isn't infringing on your freedom. If people telling you that makes you feel guilty about what you said, that's your problem.

Oh lord, it's a freaking mod. Like how people mod their games to have extra cool armor or powers. Or create their own scenes that weren't originally in the game. I remember seeing some really awesome fleshed out wedding mods for dragon age: origins I think or some other game.

It doesn't change YOUR game. It's not Bioware changing the game either. Cassandra is safe being straight in your game. Why do ppl give a fawk what other people do in their own games? People get threatened by certain ideals when it doesn't coincide with theirs and they feel the need to challenge it even when it's not affecting their gameplay. Unless it's being imposed directly on you get over it.

You're perfectly free to "speak your mind" as it is. But if what you speak is not to someone else's liking, they're just as free to give you a piece of their mind on that, too.

....I was just thinking of this meme. When it occurred to me....this mod is exactly the same as someone taking two of their action figures and making them kiss. Exactly.

My original post , the one you quoted in part, was addressing a series of comments on this thread that blamed "social justice warriors" and people imposing their ideas of political correctness for the harrassment of the modder. Are you agreeing with me and saying that those people were wrong?

Shouldn't it be a given that the backlash against this mod was both childish and extreme, regardless if someone agrees like the mod or not?  Does it matter at this point who said what?  Does it really matter if it was from a conservative bent or a liberal one?  If it's a "SJW" or a random bunch of jerks, does it really change the basic idea of some decency?

In the end, does it matter why folks did it?  This thread has been not just about the negative feedback the modder received, but how severe it was.  Death threats?  Calling her a rapist?**  I don't give a crap if you are left wing, right wing or no wing.   I could care less if someone is offended by the mod, but treating another person like this is just nuts.

This  "oh, but it's X group" shouldn't make a damned bit of difference.  It's wrong to send someone death threats.  Especially over a video game.

**Been a lot of that going around lately.  <sigh>

I have no issue with anyone but frankly I can't keep up with the acronyms and group labelling. None of them speak for me that is all I know.

This reminded me of all the dolls I had. I did not wash their hair with shampoo and make houses for them with household items.

I think I used a hair dryer too.

That gif is like my mum at the door. WILL YOU TURN THAT HAIR DRYER OFF I CAN'T HEAR MYSELF THINK.

This thread is a non stop hair dryer.

Attacking a modder over a completely optional mod...

f-Futility-Cat--89372.jpg

Now i just hope someone makes a mod that turns all characters blond, blue-eyed and white. For no other reason than just to make these peoples heads explode. And posts the hate mail for public ridicule.

If you dont mind then why exactly are you here complaining that i am?

Because you didn't just state you want to discuss it, you implied that it ought to be done. There's a difference.

My apologies if with comments like "This is the kind of attitude that keeps games from being treated like other art forms because people like you complain when people take its messages seriously" and "This game absolutely begs to be dissected in terms of social values, philosophy and political stances" you didn't mean to imply that. I misunderstood.

You people do realize all the modder did was change a plot flag?

And that the "moral police" are legitimately trying to get her mod removed from the place it's still at?

How can anyone defend that??

It's excessive to try to get the Mod removed. But it doesn't matter how much work was put into the Mod. The point is that it's a mod that changes someone's sexuality. There are people in RL who are uncomfortable with the concept of changing someone else's sexuality to match the expectation or desires of another person. Even a fictious person.

When I first heard about the backlash, I had this bright moment of excitement. I thought, for a moment, that this was a collective moment of genuine, non-biased, progressiveness. That a group of people, possibly gay, straight and sundry, stood up as one and said "Dude, it's not cool to change someone's sexuality. It doesn't matter if the sexuality in question isn't one I share. If you dismiss one orientation as not deserving respect, you lessen us all"

Then I realized the protest probably came from bitter straight guys looking for an excuse lash out after the conflict over the romance options, and that there are still probably people out there who applaud making Cass bi but would be genuinely offended at a Dorian-Bi mod, and see no problem with holding those opinions simultaneously.

Do you know how much fanfic out there changes characters' sexuality across the board? Should we go hunt all those writers down and slap them on the wrist for having fantasies about the characters they love in games? IT'S A MOD. IT'S 100% OPTIONAL AND AVOIDABLE. It's not like BioWare put out a patch that made Cassandra bisexual, or Dorian straight, or Krem a woman. There are so many mods out there. TERRIBLE MODS. Game-breaking mods. They are all avoidable! YAY!

I will say one thing about mods today, they always give people a reason to complain and fight... the devolution internet is here!

Makes me feel odd that I recall mods for fun, and remember the days of the baulder gate's mods, which some where rather off by social normals and game lore, and no one gave people heck.

I have to agree with this. The mod doesn't "change Cassandra's sexual orientation." Cassandra is not a real person. Cassandra is a fictional character. Cassandra is a bunch of coding in a computer program. She doesn't have a sexual orientation. She has a plot flag that points one way or another. But some people think she's great and would like to romance her. Just like someone might like to romance other people in the game. This is not a bad thing.

Some things can be taken WAY too seriously, and this is one of them. It's a game. It's for fun. Anyone who feels the need to get up on their personal soap box about it needs to chill.
