What is this I'm hearing about people giving a modder crap for making a Cassandra female romance mod?

I have yet to see the person who can choose to be afraid or not. Death threats on the internet are easy to ignore, but things get a little more difficult closer to home. Also, what you're advocating amounts to social Darwinism, it gives bullies free rein to do their thing if they can get away with it. That's not a culture where I would like to live. Well, unless I had free rein to kill those bullies, perhaps.

If you think that ignoring online comments is social darwinism, then I'm afraid you don't know what social darwinism is.

Missing the point as usual, o Ventus. If we don't object to cyber-bullying as a matter of principle, we're letting a might-makes-right culture develop in the online community. And don't tell me what you say to people online has no impact. This is a comparably harmless example, but similar things have been known to escalate into the real world.

I'm not missing any point, I understood it perfectly. Your point is just bad and invalid. Ignoring the trolls online isn't a socially Darwinist thing AT ALL. In what way is ignoring comments with no merit of proof or logical thought a socially Darwinist idea? Ignoring the comments is, by default, the opposite, because if you're ignoring the comments, there's no might-makes-right developing, since you're ignoring the comments.

I can't stress this enough.

lol, I see a bunch of Ieldra posts talking with an imaginary user I can't see because I have him on the ignore list. Comments are hard to ignore when the rest of the community doesn't ignore them as well.

That's inaccurate. A number of our emotions happen on unconscious level in response to stimuli; the fight or flight response, e.g. which [i]will[i] trigger if I wave a gun in your face and give you a decent reason to believe I just might actually kill you. You can (try to) choose to override such reactions and effectively lie to yourself how you feel about them, but you aren't capable of erasing this automatic mechanism, and its trigger is in the hands of the other person, not yours. To put it simpler you can choose how you react; how you feel though, it's more often than not a different story.

If you fear death, then yes you would be correct.
Not everyone fears death. Their belief in the afterlife is so strong, death is just a transition.

History gives plenty of examples of people are aren't afraid to die.

Some quite recent.

Not everyone is victim to their impulses and instincts. If you had the emotional maturity of a child you might be, but adults have learned to control those base feelings.

Yo, why don't you just say the people issuing death threats are complete jerks for doing so and don't blame the person receiving them for being bothered by the fact someone told them to kill themselves. It's completely reasonable to feel uncomfortable, bad, or otherwise shite for the fact someone was able to say to you, even in an anonymous forum like this, that they think you should stop existing.

I meant SJW as the acronym. I had to look that up a few weeks ago to see what it meant.

Well someone using your name and avatar made the following comment, which is what I was referring to.

A social conservative gamer?

What the hell is that? Actually don't tell me. Labels R Us.

Cheers.

Threaten me all you like. I will "choose" whether I am intimidated by your threats, or not.

It's my choice. Not yours.

Wave a gun in my face. Threaten me or my family, it's still MY choice how I react and feel about your threats.

Not YOURS.

Do you understand the difference? You do not get to choose how I feel. Period.
I let you, or do not allow, your actions/words to control my emotions, but it is always MY choice.

There is literally nothing you can do about it.

I can't prevent YOU from being cruel, insensitive... but I can most certainly choose how I react / feel about it.

Wanting the entire world to be enlightened and "grow up" as you put it, is a far bigger challenge than simply taking ownership and responsibility for "your" feelings. Don't you think?

What are you talking about? Uttering threats, and waving a gun in someone's face are crimes, whose definitions do not depend on the victim's reaction. This reflects the prinncple of moral culpability that is a cornerstone of the Western legal tradition.  You are responsible and accountable for your own actions and this does not and should not depend on how the victim reacts.

Maybe you were thinking about this:

This is missing the point; which was even the people who "aren't afraid to die" are still subjected to automatic, subconscious response to the prospect of death generated by their body. It has nothing to do with being "emotionally mature"; you can be pretty sure that even those emotionally mature people who try to control their base feelings have their adrenaline and other hormone production going through the roof in these moments. The belief in afterlife or whatever else they choose as a way to try to deal with it notwithstanding.

The point is that even these who choose not to be "victims" to their impulses and instincts do experience these impulses and instincts. This part of the experience is not in their hands to control.

I don't really know how it even got this far.

Don't mess with other people's world states. Period. If one person wants this thing on his game, then let him do it on his game. You don't have to do it on your game.

If there was a mod to give male inquisitors sexy female romance options, I'd totally use it and risk being called sexist - that is if I had a gaming PC, which I don't.

I never said they weren't crimes.
Nor am suggesting people do "nothing" about harassment. Despite popular belief, the internet is not anonymous.

It's because a troubling number of players are ridiculously overly invested in fictional characters and worry far too much about what people they'll likely never interact with do with their free time/want out of the game.

I'm fine with Cassandra being straight in-game. Yet if someone wants to design a mod to make her bisexual or a lesbian in their game? I really couldn't care less since it doesn't affect me in the slightest.

Heck, I'd be happy with a mod to make Cullen bisexual as originally intended. It wouldn't affect anybody else since they wouldn't be the ones invested in my play-through.

The problem starts when people start making distinctions.

It's "okay" to make Cassandra and Cullen bisexual because that's somehow pro-LGBT,

but not okay to make Sera available to male PC because that's an offense towards Lesbians.

People need to start minding their own business. Almost every mod is legitimate. (unless you go *really* crazy)

Everyone should be able to enjoy their SP games in the way they want, after all, that's what SP games are all about.

Mods are an incredible phenomenon and this condescending and judgmental (not to mention hypocritical) attitude that some malcontents have adopted with religious fervor - is ruining everyone's enjoyment while at the same time marginalizing legitimate causes as unreasonable and offensive.

At this point the whole romance thing became so tainted with BS gender politics propaganda, that I half wish to see it scrapped entirely.

There are other areas that could use the resources invested in this.

Is it not right though? People throw so much focus and attention on Romance  and grabbing torches and pitchforks whenever Bioware doesn't address every single sexual orientation under the sun. People are so aggressive about the topic , I'm surprised Bioware has the patience to tolerate all the shouting and demands.

This thread is so stupid it should be featured on Last Week Tonight with John Olliver's segment "How is this still a thing?"

Harassing and sending threats and calling someone a rapist for making a mod they don't like is bad. Period. End of story. Anyone who disagrees is a horrible human being.

Why does this need to be discussed?

The Bioware fanbase honestly is one of the most messed up fanbases I've ever witnessed, alongside the Halo community.
