What is this I'm hearing about people giving a modder crap for making a Cassandra female romance mod?

What argument? I'm not campaigning for a change in design, just suggesting people to back off of the modders. It's just not a big deal but clearly some people feel VERY strongly about this. It's... wow. Just wow.

Might want to take a few breaths there.

EDIT: I regret posting in this thread now. I took the advice in some of the earlier posts and did some searching which brought me to an insanely long reddit thread... I am ashamed of all of us as a race. It's despicable what you (and I am using the term 'you' to collectively refer to any and all who participated in the vicious attacks on this modder) have done. Absolutely despicable and unnecessary. Grow up.

I'm not speaking about the topic here, I'm speaking about your statements regarding Cassandra looking "rather ambiguous" and being "a rather odd choice for a straight only romance". How the hell do you tell someone's orientation from the way they look?

Best not to open that can of worms.

I'm fairly new to this fandom, even though I've been a fan for years, and I still can't believe the crap I've seen here and on Tumblr. I will say that I don't give a **** if there is a mod to make Cassandra, or Cullen look purple and have tails, if that's what someone wants, even if I find it bizarre. It's their game, not mine. I will say that I personally can't relate to looking at a character and saying "I really like that character, now let me change who they are so it can fit my needs" and refusing to create a man/woman/elf in order to romance them. I just find that line of thinking very foreign, but it's just my opinion. Even when I write fan fic I tend to stick to canon relationships, for whatever reason. I would never harass or insult anyone for thinking differently, though.. Even Gaider said on Twitter, when asked, that this stuff doesn't bother him as long as nobody insists their version is canon, it doesn't change what he wrote.

I also think sometimes people forgot (or never learned) how to express different opinions without one person automatically taking offense from the other. Just because someone doesn't agree with you doesn't mean they think you are wrong or a horrible person. Sorry if that doesn't make sense, I'm rambling.

Yeah, I find don't really care about someone using the mod. The underlying principle of the mod might be a little questionable, but if someone wants to use it that's perfectly fine. There's no excuse for people harassing the person who made the mod.

I don't think the female elf is the best inquisitor to use. I played elves in all the games....I'm actually tired of the fandom putting elves on a pedestal.

And as for the Witcher games.........not a good comparison. I like to play as a female character. Hopefully the game developers have another game where women have a choice to play female characters

The Witcher uses a set protagonist that has his own character. If you want to choose your PC, play Bioware games.

I just think she was a rather odd choice for the average male who may respond better to say, a Miranda than a scarred up, short-haired, muscle bound warrior. I also examined her direction toward the Inquisitor in general and some of the choices that were made about how a female inquisitor can interact with her (and for how long) in game. I know folks have a strong opinion about it. I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings over this and I certainly don't want to become another Nat or whatever her name was.

For my part, I'm not trying to drag up an old argument, but I *am* furious that a subset of people attacked a modder so viciously over it. It didn't happen with Ashley, it didn't happen with Morrigan, why is Cassandra so off-limits? I wish they had thrown in a few other options for guys, really. The fanbase might not have become so rabid over this one. Guys got the short end of the stick with romances in this game. Not sure that's necessarily a great direction to go.

Short end of the stick? You do realize that every sex and orientation has the exact number of available romances in this game.

Actually, I believe female inquisitors have more options overall. Some are race locked, but there are definitely more options for female inquisitors. There should have been a few more choices for guys that didn't include other guys, or fewer options overall that actually were equal. One romance that was exclusively for hetero males probably wasn't enough, especially when you consider females got three. As an aside, that's probably BioWare's version of an apology for what happened in ME3 with romances for hetero girls, but it still was a terrible idea in this game to not throw in a few other options for the straight boys.

Miranda, was an overly objectified character. Her sole design-pourpose in the game was to be a sex-object, blatantly obvious when she was dressed in the 'cat suit' when she was supposed to be hiding from cerberus  -_- The ass shots were also eyeroll-worthy...and the accent was really insulting.

Sorry, but cass is a brilliant character, and an example of what females in the media/magazines should be represented as. This ideal that the media/porn have instilled in men is disgusting, and affects their relationships, womens mental health, (and porn can even lead men down the road to pedophilia). Heck it's even affecting child ring younger than five, with how they dress and toddler- pagents  .

If we are to make progress in the gaming society, improve its reputation, and stop encouraging sexual-assult (aka con ass-grabs).Which games too often do, to various degrees. Then characters like Miranda need to become the rarity and not the rule.

Oh plz it's one game. The straight-boys 'often' over-sexulised characters are bad-idea that has detrimental effects on society.

No they don't. There are 4 options if you're a straight female. Two for everyone else (if we don't count bi as a sexual orientation, as they'll have more by default).

I don't think it is a huge deal though.

Miranda was hardly a character that invited assault, but there was also Ashley Williams and Tali who were far cries from a Cassandra style character without being "over-sexualized".

My point still stands: there aren't enough options that are exclusively for the hetero boys. One just isn't enough representation, and if there had been more than one, this situation with the modder might not have happened. We can argue about what men 'should' want all day long, but regardless, Bioware needs to either give everyone equal treatment, or take it out entirely. Skewing away from hetero males is NOT equal treatment. One exclusive option isn't enough.

Why not? As long as there are enough options overall I don't care about exclusivity.

I agree that Cassandra is not one who would appeal at first glance to everyone, but we have Josephine for the others and she is definitely one who should appeal at first glance to a significantly larger subset of the target audience.

Anyway, that's OT for this thread. We are in complete agreement about the reaction to the mod.

There was only one straight male exclusive option in Origins and none in DA2. And aside from the two race gated romances, straight females have the same number as everyone else. Only if you play as straight female human or elf do you get more options than other straight player characters.

And yet Cassandra is one of the most popular romances in the game, and a popular character otherwise.

While I don't personal care that Straight female got extra romance options over please don't use the excuse "it's only if you play as a human or elf that you do" because an extra option is an extra option full stop.

Since that extra option only even exists if you play as a human or an elf, it is perfectly relevant.

No it's not when you start the game you have four options it's your choice if you keep those option buy selecting your Race.

And this is relevant how, exactly?

You have always lost out on potential romances when creating your character.

Ah, but is it that way because she is the only companion or would she still have won out if there were other well-written and well-thought out options? We will never know. With the lack of a proper intimacy scene for Josephine and the overall feel of her 'companionship', there doesn't leave a lot of choice for the player who wants to feel like his character is having a true romance with a woman.

Anyway, yes I've brought this off topic. It's mostly my fault for being so late to the DA party, and when I saw what happened to this modder it just really irritated me. I just can't believe that folks could be so insecure about themselves that they would drive a programmer from the internet just for having a little fun. I can't see myself fuming if someone did it with Sera. I mean, of all the things to rage about, this has to be one of the most bizarre and innocuous ones.

There's a big difference on choices lost based on ones, sexual orientation (some people fell really uncomfortable playing a character of different sex and sexual orientation.) than there is when choosing a fictional race and losing options.

Wow that is just sad, who the hell gives a damn if someone wants to romance Cass with a female character? It "feels" wrong? Are these people serious?

Unbelievable... just ridiculous.

I can't even put an argument together I am just outraged and I didn't even know of the existence of the mod nor I care for using it.

There is little difference. You lose options either way. It doesn't matter whether you're "uncomfortable" or not.

It's things like this make me ashamed to be part of the gaming community. No wonder we get such a bad rep. Too many self entitled weirdoes more worried about forcing politics and their own personal beliefs on everyone, instead of simply having fun with games.

These are mods for Christ sakes. Either install or don't. It's that simple. Why get all butthurt and uncomfortable about something you can simply ignore?

It's easy to see that the people who harrassed the author have absolutely no one in their lives who view them in a romantic way so they live vicariously through video game romances to replace lack of imtimacy. Pretty pathetic really.

I don't agree with these kind of mods because it goes against what the writers originally intended.

If you can't romance a character because of your character's race/gender/etc., get over it. Make a new character that can.
