I actually don't support mods like this. If you want to romance a straight or gay character, choose the appropriate sex. Having said that though, I see no reason to attack the modder. If you don't like the mod, don't download it. There are a ton of, in my opinion, horrible mods out there that should not exist, yet they do. People should let it go; there are a lot more important things to get upset about.
This is basically my viewpoint.
I, like many other lesbian fans of the series, was extremely interested in making characters that could romance Cassandra and experience that arc. Look at the early pages of the Cass fan thread on this forum - before she was announced as straight - and you'll see just how many of us there were. Not being able to play through that arc as a lady Inquisitor sapped a lot of my interest in the game; getting an outright rejection scene from Cass in the game (as opposed to, say, not getting to flirt at all) was...it was sad. I was sad.
But I wasn't interested in a mod to change that. I respected the fictional character's sexuality and worried about the morality of installing a mod. I've never used any of the romance mods for any previous games. I once wrote a
fanfic about a character in a different BioWare game - a game that had no queer romance for
anybody at the time, so it's not like I had alternative representation - being gay, but I couldn't manage to finish it because, among other things, I worried about something exactly like this.
That isn't to say I care about authorial intent. I mostly don't; many authors write objectively stupid things in their stories, including BioWare's, and I feel no particular need to respect the writing skills of somebody who gets basic facts wrong. Nor do I think that it is a particularly good thing to get all pissy about mods or fanfic in the first place; they're personal creations, and even if I don't feel comfortable
myself doing something I see no need to shame others for doing something different.
Normally, increasing queer representation would be a big deal for me. But this game already has queer representation. I might quibble with many of the specifics of how it was implemented, and the specific characters involved might not be the way I'd wanted them to be, but they exist, and they're good characters. I also know that if I wanted to see Cassandra's romance, I could just play it out with a male character. But I'm not interested in roleplaying that kind of character, just like how I'm not interested in roleplaying a character that is all super into blood magic, or how I'm not interested in roleplaying a character that really loves the Qun. Playing as a male character doesn't interest me; I've done it before, in previous BioWare games, but that's basically only to experience romance arcs with straight women, and I decided that it wasn't worth a personal inability to connect with the character. And, y'know, that was that.
I was sad about Cass being straight, but I was going to deal with it; other people would deal with it in different ways, and I was okay with that, too.
But, y'know, I suspect that a big chunk of the harassment directed at Natalie isn't about "straight erasure" or "respecting creator's intent". A lot of the people who've come into this thread to say that they disapprove of what she did are Cass thread regulars. And they seem particularly intolerant to anything queer women do. I once went into the Cass thread to say that Cass being straight made me sad, and that BioWare had a history of writing women I wanted to romance as straight romances. It wasn't a call for action or change; I didn't say "mod this!" or "Biower u suk!" All I said was that I was sad about it. But my post came in for a wave of opprobrium from many of those male Cass thread regulars all the same. It's not merely that they disapprove of other people having the temerity to mod Cass to be bi in
their own games. It sometimes seems more that they can't stand the thought of anybody but themselves even being interested in the character, or having feelings about her.
