What would Mass Effect 4 be like?

First of all HI!!! I just created this account to express my feelings and experience with the Mass Effect Franchise... you see I started the trilogy only this year (2015 obviously) can't believe I neglected this game. Anyway, it was an enjoyable game very polished and well done although some people pointed to plot holes and stuff but still it is a solid game.

However, the past month and weeks bugged me too much... my Android phone and FB account keeps on showing "NEW MASS EFFECT" "MASS EFFECT 4" blah blah blah, I was excited with all the new characters, new open world, blown away by the videos of the environment as well as new vehicles... but one news or article bugged me to hell... IGN - Eurogamer and others reported that the previous crew is never coming back... AT ALL. I'm basically confused with the LORE of the new mass effect, according to BIOWARE it will happen at the lifetime of Shepard in a new galaxy... so that means we will still be fighting the reapers? or at the time "SHEPARD WAS BORN"? also another confusing info is that "Garrus and others" may make a cameo? it doesn't add up.

One thing is for sure the new ME will not be focused with Shepard whatsoever, it will force old fans and new people to have a fresh experience. If so, are we going to see monuments erected for Shepard or the old crew if the setting takes place after the reaper war? or is it in the reaper war having the same plot? i.e. people dying, yadi yadi yadah only with better graphics?

Please note I am not against the new engine, new world, new characters and stuff but it seems to me... in my own opinion so do not crucify me...

that the new mass effect...

is a reboot?

Although I am pumped for new exploration, I would certainly miss the old crew... wish I could see Tali's face for real in the game... how would this "new crew or characters" compare to the "household people" who saved the galaxy? dunno... wonder what the lore would be like or how I can relate with new characters. To give credit to Bioware when I played ME2 with loads of new characters it was fun and enjoyable but all of them had a common denominator... Sacrifice at all cost.

Welcome.

The one thing I can say about ME4, is that I really wish that they won't make it a prequel to the trilogy.

I want to forget everything about the current ending.

And as for returning characters, we had a good ride, and while I won't be opposed to seeing some of the old faces, I would prefer a new story with new characters.

Agreed. I am not against new characters but it would be more sweet if they all made an appearance as NPC'S or something to give more depth to the story even without joining you into the journey... just want to see Tali's in-game face not some stock photo... familiar face but you know (VOICE ACTORS COSTS $$$). I'm sure the story will not be about shepard but there are conflicting reports... might have to wait a bit more.

Hopefully awesome. We all have hundreds of requirements but alas BW can't make our wishes come true. In any case I would like sequel which will give a nod to our choices. I know it would be hard to set the right setting but they should address stuff like Krogans&Genophage, Geth-Quarian relations and ofc the endings be they Destroy, Synthesis... I would add being able to chose the race for our protagonists. Good story and characters are a no brainer.

We will see, I have high hopes in BW. Oh, and welcome to the forum!

It seems like it isn't going to be a direct sequel to ME3 either.

The devs have not only been very careful about not referring to the next Mass Effect game as ME4, but at least one former Bioware employee griped about fans using it. That wouldn't make any sense if the game picks up where ME3 left off.

Which means... what? That it is certainly not a sequel?

I guess we'll just wait and see. As long as it's not a prequel or takes place anywhere inside the current timeline, I'll be interested.

Otherwise, they can shove it up their artistic integrity.

I don't care if it's not a "direct sequel", as long as it is set after the series, even if it's like 100, 200 etc years later. I don't want it to be a prequel and be about some war or event that everyone already knows the outcome of, and I don't want to play as a random person during the Reaper War..

I don't really give a **** about the timeline honestly. I just don't want to be an Alliance member. Colonist, mercenary, private citizen, C Sec, alien whatever so long as i'm not a human space marine again.

Has to be a sequel. What would a prequel be about?

- Skillian Blitz - just a small skirmish. Batarians raid Mindoir, attack Elysium and then are defeated at Torfan. That's it.

-First Contact War - not even a war, the turians call it an "incident". Turians blow up some Alliance ships and take Shanxi. The Alliance takes it back, then the Council steps in. All over in a few weeks, no full game material here.

-Krogan Rebellions - No humans

-Rachni Wars - No humans

-Prothean Cycle - No humans

Also, the E3 Concept Video from last year shows some familiar N7 armor design and some landscape that looks very post war. Even spotted a crashed ship that appears to be a current generation frigate or freighter. I would bet on a direct sequel.

**** humans. Enough with that human centric ****. Things were going down in this galaxy way before we showed up and I wouldn't mind playing through all of it.

There's more to the ME universe than humans. What's the point of having so many various races with their own ways and cultures if we can't explore them?

Point taken. But I just don't see EA/Bioware making a game where humans don't have some kind of involvement. I guess that turian was right, we humans are (mostly) all racists.

They could do a time jump as well, 200 years past.... etc. Bioware has done it with games like TOR.

I understand where you are coming from, and I wouldn't mind playing such a game myself.

But I think that many people simply find it easier to connect to something familiar like playing a human.

Man please. Its not like the aliens are truly alien or anything. They behave like us mostly and simply look different. No stretch at all to make an alien only game in my eyes.

Besides, how many of us grew up playing games with out humans in them? I have. Sonic the Hedgehog, Kirby, Vectorman etc.

A human less ME game will sell. It just has to be made.

I completely agree with you on both accounts and know quite a few people who feel the same. Infact I'm getting quite bored with all the human only games "sigh" but bioware will do what the what the majority wants and after Inqusition a lot of people don't think it's worth it which is a shame.

I was under the impression that people liked being able to play as the various races. I didn't like how ridiculously scrawny my elven characters looked but thats it.

I certainly wouldn`t be interested in a game where I couldn't play as a human. There's got to be something I can relate to in the character I play. The aliens in ME might not be so much different from humans but their culture, their background, everything about them is made up, it's fantasy. Exploring it is nice, but imagine this fantasy background is mine? Maybe not too big of a stretch, but I wouldn't like it.

Humans are real. So is their culture , their history, their characteristic traits and thus a great part of their background.

You say this but there exist people who feel the exact opposite and infact love those aspects of a species too be somthing other than a plain human but if everyone felt the same as you there would be barely any variety or enjoyment in games today for people who do enjoy the non human characters that have existed through out gaming history. I'm not saying you don't have the right to feel the way you do I'm just trying to say that not everthing is black and White and yes the majority of humans seems too enjoy playing human characters so most games are either human only or put more focus towards humans when they make a game that includes other races. But I just wonder how the majority would act and feel if it was infact the opposite way around and they found themselves in the minority's position with their human characters being the less used and in return less fleshed out characters. And yes I know in a perfect world we would all get the kind of games we want but I and hopefully you too know that this is far from being a perfect world so there are money and time restraints things get cut or under done and they prioritise the things that the majority would like which in return too them means it will sell more ie the more money they make. It's just disgusting seeing the majority of people saying that after Inqusition that adding something that makes a game worth it to a lot of people myself included isn't worth it because it will dull the game ie taking recourses away which could make their content better for them and that just sadens me "sigh" but people will do what they do I guess.

I'm not trying to be black and white about it. If there is an option to play non human characters that is perfectly fine for me, and I don't mind that resources are used on this. But a game without any humans at all? That is black. That's a "no go" for me. And I don't think that playing only humans is killing variety either. I like exploring those made up fantasy things but I like to do this from a familiar perspective. It's a roleplay thing.

Ah sorry for the mixup unfortunately a lot of people here do feel that way about the resources and I think that it's a shame. But I digress it's good to know some people are still okay with it.

Yeah you're right about that.

But in ME we run around in space with made up tech, equipment, organizations, planets, systems etc.

The only thing that's really familiar is humans speaking English. Just about everything else is made up.

I wouldn't mind both a sequel and prequel hybrid trilogy.

You play a character some time in future after shepards death. You could potentially have former teammates still alive up to thousand years later (Liara, Rex, grunt etc.). And the plot could involve time travel, taking your new squad back to important historical events like the first contact war, krogen wars, and events from the trilogy. This would allow for plenty of potential interaction with original trilogy events and characters.
