As long as I dont have to deal with anybodys family issues again...I really wanted to hire a therapist for the normandy so when they starting whining about that stuff I could just direct them there...Now I enjoyed mass effect 2 and its cast but really....Tali dad issues, Jacob dad issues, Miranda dad/sister issues, Samara daughter issues...thane son issues... So ya stop that lol. Also no more ice queens or hardasses turning out to be giant softees...

I do like your first example. In knights of the old republic 2 I thought the influence system was nice how you could make people kinda go light or dark. And it could actually enable unique party member cutscenes depending on what those lvls were, and you could see how it affected their personality a bit throught the game. Also changing the appearance of the character was a nice little touch as well.

I'm ok with your third example as long as it doesnt come out of nowhere to simply give you that "shocking" moment and actually makes sense.

Now as far as what i'd like to see....I always like being able to see a bad guy join up and actually stay a bad guy. Not suddenly join the team and see the errors of their ways, and hell sometimes even convince you to maybe rethink your role or ideals. I think It gets a little stale when its always your character convincing or changing everybodys opinions, let them have the ability to do that for me every once and a while.

Other than that I'm up for any new arcs they havent explored with characters before.

This, so much this !

I loved helping out the characters in ME2, but when you look at it all the loyalty missions basis was a matter of family of family metaphor issues, which was cool and all but a bit repetitive...

I'd love some bold choices with the companion relationships :

- Morally ambiguous to downright evil dude joining up

- True betrayal

- True possibility of death (the suicide mission in ME2 was superbly executed in my humble opinion, I lost so many people but I definitely was feeling each loss)

Batarian (ex-slaver).

I'd definitely like to see some non-villain Batarians. Either ex-slaver, ex-hegemony, or someone who's totally against the Batarian government. Maybe on a similar path to Wrex, where they begin as a mercenary and then go on to actively fight the Batarian's oppressive regime or something.

Maybe have a crewmember or squadmate that turns out to be a traitor

If we get a Batarian squadmate I would hope he or she would be the total opposite of what we've been conditioned to expect from Batarians. So far the Batarians have been presented as almost cartoonishly one note villains. I think any Batarian companion character would be more interesting if they presented a slightly more complex picture of the species.

So I wouldn't even give the character an ex-slaver background. Have him or her be Batarian military (past or present) and a total patriot, but solidly paragon and honorable.

I see where you're coming from. But I feel going the exact opposite and breaking social norms and straying too far from species stereotypes would also be a bit cliche. I'd prefer my anti-hero squadmate to be a Batarian instead of Krogan this time around.

Besides, he would be an "ex" slaver for a reason.....whilst having some skeletons in the closet.

However, I would love to have an exiled Quarian (male) who has disdain for the Flotilla. That'd be an interesting squadmate.

How about a squadmate that is an undercover Spectre. Being the eyes and ears of the Council and relaying mission progress to them. But it's only revealed towards the later parts of the game. Making the player feel conflicted towards them. As if they're a spy.

Garak in Mass Effect!!!!

I would love both these ideas! I really like the idea of a traitor/spy as some people have mentioned, and would definitely like that not to be a batarian character. Definitely someone less predicatable. I like the idea of a batarian ex-slaver especially since that's an area that could cause conflict with the protag, or other squadmates, even if the batarian themselves no longer support slavery.

As for the quarian, not only would it be good to have opposite gender aliens (male quarian, female turian/salarian etc), having him be negative about the Migrant Fleet would be a wonderful way to show other perspectives than Tali's pro-fleet one. And it could offer insight into the lives of quarians who do leave.

I'd really like to see a turian biotic too. I can't quite remember, but I'm sure there's something about them in turian culture that's different to the other races. Plus, we haven't had one before. As far as I remember, the only one in the series so far was Nyreen.

Yeah, biotics have a stigma in Turian culture. They're shunned for the most part.

And hatred, as everyone just reloads over and over.

Would this matter?   People reload anyway for many reasons.   I've been known to reload just to check out dialogue options.

Though I'm not a random fan, I want there to be a reason for an action.

I like the idea of the "good" and "evil" NPC's but I'd really like at least some of them, to stand by their ideology and either refuse to join me or even leave or try to kill my character,  if my character's action caused it.  I never did have a BG2 game where Edwin Odesserion joined.  And maybe a couple or neutral NPC's you could sway one way or the other.

edit - I want choices.  I want to be able to pick who I want and leave others.  I probably won't, never left Garrus or Wrex, but I knew I could have.  :)

DRAGON AGE INQUISITION SPOILERS

Players who romanced Solas got a pretty big surprise when he "betrays" them. And while this happens at the end of the game, and we don't know his real motivations as the Dread Wolf, or how that will all play out, the impact of that moment was awesome.

I think they could do it, definitely. Screw the butthurt. It'd be amazing. Gamers ****** and moan about ME3's endings (choices didn't have consequences! waaah!), then in MENext a love interest betrays you halfway through, and they'll complain just as hard. So if they're going to complain no matter what, why not maximize your artistic potential and tell a really rad story?

OK  I loved the Solas romance.   But I also like Cullen and the other romances they had included.   ME3 ending sucked, burnt body, Yes sucked.  Romances were fine (other than poor Jacob).  Burnt Body, breath or no breath bad.  (thank you pc mod person)

  • The Protagonist goes through life-shaking events that engages us, the players, to change our perspective and creating character development for our character.

  • Romanceable synthetic AI character (in a non-synthesis world) -- what is love about without genitals (lol)

  • Romance arcs that avoid pandering but are instead all targeted towards enrichening the themes of the main story.

Now that I have garnered everyone's attention with my over-indulging bold-fonted words... I have one more that is important:

  • A GOOD, NON-ARCHETYPIC, FRIGGING, VILLAIN FOR CHRIST'S SAKE!

A deadly assassin tasked with killing you infiltrates your group and becomes a potential love interest. It's up to the player to catch very subtle-hints to piece together acts of their betrayal. Some players may never know. As for others who figure out the deception - deciphering whether or not the affection is genuine and where their true loyalty really lies would be even more ambiguous. Depending on your morality/choices:

They are either faking affection/loyalty for you - you are still marked for death:

  • If they fooled you as a love interest they will attempt to assassinate you during the sex scene
  • If they fooled you as a non-li they will eventually open conflict with you after an elapsed time
  • If you weren't fooled in either case you can confront them directly (can still lead to variations on first two)
  • Or alternatively if(love_interest && !fooled) keep it to yourself and loss of trust inadvertently leads to their death on a later mission

OR They genuinely fall for you - might even betray their masters for you to prove loyalty (li-only):

  • If they fooled you they will eventually come clean and confide in you; u can then either accept them, kill them or force them to leave
  • If they didn't you have the option to initiate the confrontation (causing more intense variations on these 3 options)
  • Or alternatively keep it to yourself and (optionally) assassinate them later during the sex scene
