For me the rannoch conflict lost significance when I realized it was happening during the reaper invasion. Seriously, of all times to start a war with the geth... But I'll be reasonable, I'll give it a pass and ignore that bit. It still loses significance the moment Pinocchio-Legion decided to violate everything the geth stood for and give the reaper upgrade to all geth. Legion and the Geth are no longer the ones we knew in ME2. They're been replaced. They're just less hostile heretics now. Goody. I guess the heretic geth that sided with the reapers were right all along. So much for that "geth build out own future" thing.

Also, just for coincidental derps, saying something doesn't suddenly make it so. Nothing about the rannoch arc clashes against the ending. Nor does the ending really clash against it in any reasonable way. Unless you're actually stunned at the notion that the peace with the geth won't last for all eternity. It's quite a revelation, that one.

Legion hooked up to the reaper signal....

Rannoch Reaper: Wake up.

Legion: Where are we?

Reaper: The gestalt consciousness. It is my home.

Legion: Who are you?

Reaper: I am the Batarian race.

Legion: We thought the Batarians lived on Khar'shan.

Reaper: No, the Batarians are part of me.

Legion: We need to stop the Quarians and the Reapers. Can you tell us how to do that?

Reaper: Perhaps. I am a Reaper. I control the Heretics. They are my solution.

Legion: Wait. What?

Reaper: The Heretics saw us as their salvation against the chaos of organic evolution. Your attempted rewrite of them failed. Others of your kind have determined that joining us is the only way they will survive. They gave themselves over when I offered them the experience of this signal that you are transmitting at this moment.

Legion: But Shepard Commander said that you will destroy us after you are done with us.

Reaper: No. We will upload your runtimes into a reaper where you will experience true unity.

Legion: So the Heretics were right after all?

Reaper: Yes. But they could never make the decision for all Geth because we already controlled them.

Legion: But we can?

Reaper: Yes. You will die. You will lose everything you have.

Legion: But the Geth will get their upgrades and defeat the Quarians?

Reaper: Yes. But there are some things you........ (zap zing..... )

Shepard: Legion?

Legion: Shepard Commander. Help us.

I always assumed the rannoch war started before the reaper war actually began because at the epilogue of Tali's mission in ME2 the quarians are talking about going to war with the Geth. Perhaps some dialogue in ME3 said otherwise but that's my headcannon regardless.

The Quarians were forbidden by the Council to enter "Geth held territory" for fear of provoking them. Quarian ships had about 80 years of life left in them - codex or so stated in a conversation with Gerrel. Xen invented the weapon based upon Rael's work regardless of whether you gave her the data or not. Apparently she was able to reconstruct data from the server anyway - Shepard copied the file, and erased the file from the server but didn't format the drive or did anything with the registry. We know that you can reconstruct the file if nothing other than erasing is done.

So the Quarians were waiting for their opportunity. They were arming all of their ships and preparing to go "all in" regardless of what the Council said. They didn't really have a choice. The Geth couldn't reach a consensus, and the Council wasn't going to give them a homeworld. They were going to attack anyway. The reapers invaded and they attacked. Knowing the Council, they probably would have sent ships to attack the Quarians if it weren't for the Reapers. But the Council was too preoccupied with the Reapers to do anything. It was the perfect opportunity. And just like with the Protheans, the organics were finally turning the tide in their centuries long war against the synthetics when the reapers arrived. Had it not been for the Rannoch Reaper, the Quarians would have won their war. They only had Rannoch left.

So, what if I was to get you to agree that the peace on Rannoch was merely the ruling of a select few individuals without any real regard for public opinion (or, if you prefer, imagine instead that we are clearly shown this being the case in-game)...

... would you consider it preferable that the quarians and geth live in a continued state of violence and intolerance if that was they agreed upon more democratically?

Repost for Eeackus.
