I just came by accident with this alpha gameplay video:
Any reason why they could have removed such spectacular content?

This was an alpha that wasn't even supposed to be seen to the general public.
It barely counts as gameplay footage.
Also, time constricts, budget and new changes in direction, probably resulted in some gameplay elements being scrapped.
It is a shame.
In the alpha version the sense of freedom was greater, and the landscape view amazing.
In the actual game we have large chunks of rocks that always limit where you should and you should not go, that totally breaks the open-map purpose.
If I remember correctly it's just Crestwood in its pre-alpha stage. Doesn't look THAT different if you examine it closely.
It is a shame.

Not sure what you are talking about missing content, in another thread a person took multiple shots of that video and compared it to Crestwood we got and its pretty close to being identical. The big difference is that a popup that was there isn't part of the game and it could have been removed for a multitude of reasons including not getting it to work the way they intended it to.

I do agree that the base terrain has been kept. But some of the buildings changed and the placement of the water rift is now on the other side of the dam. But most importantly it seems that at that time there weren't so many of those large rocks, I dont know how they manage the off-map situation but on second 12.52 of the video you can see how it is more open.
Things I do not understand, how in the whole game I did not see a single gate to break the same way as in minute 22:29? please someone correct me if i am wrong.
Nevertheless, I understand that this is how game development works. The game is great and it is not easy to pull off a quality software for such different platforms at the same time.

This one was a heart-breaker for me. This footage had me more excited to play Dragon Age than any other thing I saw pre-release. I was looking forward to thinking strategically, having to constantly make desisions that would drastically change gameplay and opinions of my group, and most of all, DEFENDING KEEPS! I was so excited to take over and defend my keeps. I was stoked for that!!!
When I captured my first keep in the game, i was SOOOOO excited for getting to use it as base, protect it from the bad guys, stock it with people, etc. And then...it never happened. Got some war table missions, and that was it. Same with Skyhold. A big ole castle that was useless.
This was the first game I ever followed closely through the early stages of development, so I had no idea what "alpha footage" even meant. Now I do. Lesson learned!
I went into Crestwood fully expecting it to play out exactly like the footage. I actually had to pause for a couple minutes to reflect on the fact that it's a totally different Crestwood upon the realization.

You should NEVER expect alpha footage to be in this finished product.
They released trailers of DA2 with Bethany and Carver both alive in Darktown. Cassandra also had white hair. ITS ALPHA Footage for a reason.

This is not the only game this happened to. Check the DA2 with all the alpha footage that was NOT in the game.
Also...look up the definition of Alpha footage.

Consoles most likely.
That's my opinion.

I like in the Video he says enemies match your level in combat....
I wonder what happened to that in the final cut, my game they are all terribly low and loot is useless to me all the way through the game..

Not to mention that we wasn't suppose to see that demo for a reason
It was probably deemed to be too complicated for the average target audience for EA's and Bioware's games so they removed it.

Some things do need to be changed because of hardware constraints and it could have been possible at the time, but later additional graphical consideration required those rocks to be changed. As far as the keep gate, they aren't exactly the same, but I remember all the complaining about how that specific moment worked out here on the BSN and people were frantically tripping over one another talking about how dumb it was for Cassandra to break down a keep door like that.
The real problem I have with posts like this that developers are getting quieter and quieter about releasing information about a game and threads like this to me will mean future updates from developers at BioWare could become much less frequent and less things will be shown to us as proof of concept. Some of the arguments (not yours specifically) becomes "I saw this pre-alpha cellphone video 14 months before the game was released from a closed door presentation that was never officially released by BioWare. Now I know they officially released the E3 demo and lifted the review embargo a week before release so I could get updated information, but I am clinging to the old version of Crestwood."

Here are my own thoughts besides the obvious "time / money / alpha footage" reasons...
Plot: What would the Red Templars even gain by attacking Crestwood? Making the Inquisitor kinda sad? Or are they after the castle? Because...
Futility: Big whoop. You took my castle. I'll take my inner circle with me and take it over again, since I can freely storm castles like that.
Overall, the scenario just strikes me as... pointless. Both in terms of story and gameplay.
People really need to learn what "alpha" means...

I think this may actually be why the plot changed - we've already got other scenarios where we fight Red Templars. The whole of Emprise du Lion is about that! The Crestwood side story with the flooded dam is actually more interesting to me than just doing that again.
As for the 'choose the castle or the village!' scenario, I can think of several reasons they might have taken that out. They said that you could save both if you were fast enough, and maybe they found in internal playtesting that everyone just went for the 'good' option, rendering the choice pretty pointless. (I think that they discussed having a way to save Leandra in DA2, but it got cut for similar reasons?)

Yes...as my post clearly stated, I did not know what it meant then, and I do now. But thank you for the suggestion.

Well Bioware must have very valid reasons to every thing they removed. Maybe as you say, the whole game experience could not be consistent as it was in alpha, and mostly of all when they decided to include xbox360 and PS3 the graphical structure sure needed to be reconsidered.
I just hope Bioware or game companies do not get quieter because we are just discussing what things from alpha we thought should have been kept, or trying to guess what was the reason for some changes.
I can say one thing that I am glad they removed, that top orientation bar similar to Skyrim. Our mini-map is much better.
Hold on, if it was an E3 demo, why're people saying we weren't supposed to see it?
Sorry my mistake there. It was a private event, not E3.
I have updated the first post.
I think the E3 one showed the game mostly as it is now.
