How did Solas' orb break exactly?

We see in the fight with Corypheus that the inquisitor ripped the orb from Cory's grasp with the mark and the orb was charged with energy, then he/she used the orb to close the breach, after that the orb was no longer charged, and the inquisitor dropped the orb on the ground and killed Cory, however the orb was still intact after it was on the ground. After that stones started to falling from the sky. So are we to presume that the ancient elven orb of destruction was broke by something as mundane as stones? Or am I missing something?

Or simple overuse.  Cory wasn't exactly being gentle with it during the last phase of the final fight.  And closing the Breach with it probably caused some strain as well.

Corphy applied a +50 buff to plot armour for the orb. When he died, so did the armour.

It obviously broke because of reasons.

The orb survived the explosion of the conclave but couldn't survive an 8ft fall from the air.

My belief was it was the use of the orb to close the breach.  It exhausted its power, and then it fell and broke because it was dead already.

The orb looks intact when you drop it, though. Assuming that's not a mistake, then the only explanation is indeed a rock falling on it b/c you left it on the ground instead of picking it up as you ran.

Because it was convenient so that Bioware could have Fen'Harel absorb Mythal's powers.

I mean, it is not that difficult for Solas or the Inquisitor to use Telekinesis to grab the orb towards them from a distance or just use Fade Step and pick the Orb...

Well, things tend to break when you drop them. Honestly, with Corypheus' weird fingers, I'm surprised it lasted this long in his grasp. Realistically, he would have defeated himself from day 1 by accidentally dropping the thing.

Yep. As soon as Quizzie let the orb go I was just like 'Quizzie, no! You're gonna break it!' and look what happens! Out of all the times for Solas to hang back and let the Inquisitor 'do whatever,' he picks an odd one. 'Sure, wave the orb around...it's not like I've been trying to secure the thing for our entire acquaintance.'

What really bothers me about that is, and I can't recall right now, did they actually answer one way or another if the Mark/Anchor 'died' with the orb? I know they said it couldn't be removed without the Inquisitor's death, but I don't remember anyone mentioning the consequences of the orb becoming defunct.

The orb didn't break when the inquisitor dropped it on the ground.

For Solas, the orb falling to the ground and breaking was like the trauma of one dropping their ice cream.

I assumed it got "exhausted", but dang. This thread is funny.

It obviously broke because of reasons.

The orb survived the explosion of the conclave but couldn't survive an 8ft fall from the air.

most logical answer is:

The orb was intact, but when we weren't looking someone snatched it away and replaced it with a broken orb.

tadaa!

Ancient Elven safety precaution. The Inquisitor forgot to say "Solas May I?" before using it to close the Breach.

"Noooo! Curse my butterfingerssss! Curse theeeeemmm!"

And that's the moral of the story.

Don't eat buttered popcorn before pursuing world domination.

Corypheus would have won, if only he washed his hands.

It was rather the Anchor that let the Inquisitor grab the orb from Cory's hand.

It ptobably broke because it was atached to Corypheus. Killing him in the fade probably destroyed the Orb.
