Ok so I've decided my next playthrough Im going to play as a mage with purely lightning abilities alongside their specialization. Question is which sounds better? Necro is my first choice as I was thinking static cage+walking bomb+chain lightning=explosion of blood and guts...but at the expense of a lot of disapproval. Rift also produces lots a fun with PotA combined with static cage, chain lightning and Pushing Down. At the expense of not having explosions of blood and guts. I want to make a decision based on fun factor and approval

I think only Cole outright disapproves of Necromancy. Cassandra basically says she didn't expect you to be the Mortallitassi type, and Blackwall/Bull just think it is weird. i don't think any other companions say anything.

I would personally play Rift Mage over Necromancer. The near infinite mana and fluid combs make it pretty satisfying to play. Necro is just too mana gated. It doesn't have the cheap spells (10 mana Spirit Blade, 20 Fade Cloak) that KE has, and it doesn't have a strong mana mechanic (Restorative Veil) that Rift Mage has. Death Siphon rarely gets used from my experience, since all the regular guys die in massive aoe and it is useless in single target fights.

If you want to farm Fade-Touched Snowfleur you can get heal 1% max health on hit gear that will revive after you Simuclarum(sp?). Altho I would hate to have to "die" every fight for my class to truly shine.

If you want the explosion of blood and guts and PotA, you can try to get Fade-Touched Nevarrite to craft "On kill: target explodes for 75% weapon damage" onto your weapon.

I really want to see someone try soloing the game with a snoufleur necro, just because it's such a hilarious build. Just bumrush into danger to hit simulacrum as fast as possible, then continuously res and drop back into simulacrum. Rift mages may have terrifying mana regen, but their spells still cost mana.

Plus, there's so many silly possibilities with friendly fire. Such as "oh no, the necro's not dying fast enough, better drop a fire mine under them".

I might kit up Dorian that way when my rift mage runs off, just for giggles. :D

In my opinion, you should be neither.

Mages are supposed to be flexible. They are supposed to be versatile. Make your mage a versatile one as opposed to one that just two things.

If you plan to go on with it though...Here is my advice:- Your build does not really matter because you can craft gear.

To put it mildly, the crafting system is broken. Not broken in a way that can be fixed, but fundamentally flawed. It is customizable for sure but...just look at games like Morrowind and how they did loot and crafting as opposed to this one and you will understand...

Here, rare & powerful  items or materials doesn't really mean anything, you can find it everywhere if you looked. Its not like finding Daedric Armor in Morrowind where its the one and only unique overpowered item...

Talk about dieing to win LOL. I'm going to have to do it, just to see if it really can be done.
