What Makes You A Graphics Wh*re?

Last year around Black Friday I spent an amount of money on graphics card that would have bought me a next gen console. This should last me for several years. However, I am honestly considering purchasing another (and maybe upgrading my entire system) at the end of this year, just so I can play games like Watch_Dogs maxed with 60 FPS. Just about every game I play right now, I downsample and max out. I've kept myself from playing two games I love, Final Fantasy XIII and XIII-2, because they're locked at 30 FPS and I can't stand it.

However, that doesn't mean I don't play games with poor graphics. I've bought Final Fantasy VII and VIII last year, two old games with painfully terrible graphics (and astonishingly poor framerate). Sitting on my desktop right now are Jet Set Radio, Uru, Mount and Blade Warband, Grow Home (highly, highly recommend this game btw), and Anachronox. All old games or otherwise games with very poor graphics.

So while I spend stupid amounts of money on graphics, and focus on them quite a bit (they're keeping me from playing a couple of games I love), I also play games that don't fit into those categories at all, that look quite poor.

Am I a graphics wh*re? What makes a graphics wh*re in your eyes?

For me a graphics ****** is someone who refuses to play a game unless it looks pretty. Simple as that really. Being unable to play a game at less than 60FPS depressing but understandable. Also i'm pretty sure FF13 and 13-2 have mods to let you play them in 60fps.

What makes me prefer better graphics? Well, it's a Video game. You're trying to portray a world's locales through visuals. The better graphical quality, the more I enjoy it. I used to prefer higher graphics(and still kinda do), but Style and Beauty can't typically trump substance. Visuals are inexorably part of the video game formula; If you like em', you like em'. If you don't, you don't.

JSR has poor graphics? My eyes must be failing me. Mount & Blade is lacking, that's true. Anachronox seemed to handle pretty well on graphics. Seen better, seen worse.

I did include "old games" there :P

And Anachronox has the same problem that Xenoblade has, the faces are atrocious. Though I haven't given it much time yet, and I'm sure I'll enjoy it (the first five minutes had me laughing out loud).

Because visuals matter to me. It's a major factor in immersing the player in a game world. The visuals in games like Mass Effect, Red Dead, Witcher, Hard Reset and Dishonored have a lasting effect. You feel like you want to be back in that place again long after your play session.

Yeah, that too. One of the best tricks games can pull is making you believe you're in whatever world they've created. Part of it's their own design, but the graphics engine and all its Bells/Whistles play a big part.

Fair enough. I'd say they're about the same quality as Deus Ex, where they're more akin to a jarring mix of flat edges grafted together to look like a face.

60 FPS is better. Escapist can whine all they want, there's a reason no tournaments are done with 30 fps. Listen to what TB has to say on the topic.

I read "brag about their specs" as "show of their body" and "grass" as "bush."

Lol indeed. I actually think that's an appropriate critique though, graphically poor. What Jet Set Radio does have is a superb art style, which I think makes up for its lack of graphical detail. I'm sure that's a thing. Like, a game could look bad or dated and still be visually appealing. I can't really think of an appropriate comparison to illustrate my point of various degrees of cel-shading graphics. I guess this list may demonstrate what I mean. "May" since I swear some of this sh*t is not cel-shaded.

Usually I'd say something snarky.  But just like what you like.

You got a great card, get a better one if you want it.  I had acceptable viola strings, but I asked for better ones for Christmas.  Did I need them?  No.  But I think I sound better now.  It could be in my head, but it makes me happy.  I also have like 30 pairs of chucks.  One isn't any better than the other but they look cool and it pleases me.  So if you want a fancy new graphics card go out and get one.

You've only got a problem if you start making other people feel bad about their specs.
