From the stats that have been floating around, either surveys done by those in BSN or one published by Bioware themselves, humans still remain the primary racial choice of most players.

Why is this so ? I am curious so as to why would someone play as a human in a fantasy game, especially when they are given the choice to play non-humans.

I mean, you are already a human in real life so why would you play as a human in a setting where the fantastical and the imaginary reign supreme ?

The one extra ability point is rather meaningless considering the fact that Inquisitor can get 5 bonus ability points in game. The broken arms for male Elves are an issue but that can be mitigated somewhat if you wear good armor or mod the game to allow your male Lavellans to wear armor or other types of clothing.

So I am curious to hear about why people who play humans play them ? I have tried to play as one but never managed to finish playing them...

Because there is more to a fantasy setting than pointy ears and stubby legs

I mean heck why watch Game of Thrones

or consume any creative imaginative media that has humans as its subject

I mean I'm already human, how different can it possibly be than my real life right?

In DA:O, I just didn't care to be an elven mage. If there had been a dalish option, I might have taken it.

In Inquisition, I'm maining an elvish mage, so it's all good.

Except I haven't played a qunari (no plans to at the moment).

I always play a female human mage. I love elves and tried to play one in both DAO and DAI, but the frail look (in DAI) and the way they are with humans just didn't suit how kind and open-minded I am when I play. Especially the rude way you can talk to the King when he's being kind to you at Ostagar.

I play all the races but I like playing humans as much as the other races.

Sure you are a human in real life but mages DO NOT EXIST in real life.   Neither do rogues or Warriors.

People play what makes them feel comfortable and people should NOT be bashed on if they prefer humans.

Some people have the IMAGINATION to roleplay them the same way they can play the other races.

Its also very trendy and popular to hate on humans and I sense a condescending tone in your post. If you are trying to understand then Im sorry for misunderstanding but please understand...people are NOT going the game the same way you do.

I LOVE when I played a City Elf though and told him bluntly I murdered an Arl for raping my cousin. He goes "You... WHAT?" LOL

Can you or somebody elaborate more on this ? I want to start a new game and can't decide if I want an elf or finish my older human mage campaign...

I always hear about humans fitting better, but I just can't decide which is better. Humans seem to fit  until you arrive at Skyhold, but after that there's too much elven stuff going on.An elf feels much more involved in those things than a human. I always lose motivation after Skyhold when playing a human.

ok, the real reason i play humans is because if i make another 13 year old female elf, the temptation to lust after those elfy pixels will become too much.

I've played as a human and an elf. I'm going to go against the grain a bit and say that each were as rewarding in their own ways.

I haven't finished my quanri, but between all my other siblings (four of us total), we've played each race at least once and the general consensus is that elves and humans have it better, but there are definitely perks and interesting facets to being a human or dwarf.

The reason humans are the most popular race is because people can relate to humans the most.

It becomes harder to put yourself in your character when you play as a midget, huge oxman or an elf.

It should go without saying that I'm obviously not speaking for everyone.

You can play it as an elf who gets to know his true heritage or human who stumbles on things s/he not fully understands and/or is oblivious to, imo both work just fine

Easier face gen?

I could spend days trying to make a pleasing elf or qunari face and still fail.

I will play as other races for subsequent playthroughs, but my first playthrough, and my canon one, is always a human mage.  For me, playing as anything other than a human seems like pandering to the story (not by BioWare), like "Oh, I have to play as some sort of non-human minority to make them the hero because humans have typically been heroes and/or dominate the world."  I just feel like humans fit better in the heroic roles, at least those established by the DA world so far.  Maybe someday I would play as another race for canon, but so far, humans are my preferred race.  I also have an easier time being a human on a canon playthrough because I prefer to play as myself when I make things canon, and then I play as something else to see other choices.  I'm glad the other races are included for the variety, and I like to see how the world treats you differently as a different race, but that's about it.

I also love playing as a Dwarf, but the reasons I roll human characters in DA games are 1) animations tend to be created with humans in mind, and so I don't have to worry about crap like magically growing taller in some cut scenes and then shrinking in others 2) humans in Thedas aren't the same as humans on earth. Different social structures, different belief systems, etc. So to play as a human in Thedas is effectively like playing a different race, at least to me, because I don't share many of the perspectives of a human in Thedas.

I find that a bit of an illogical argument. First off, while I am a human of Earth, I am not a human of Thedas. I can't swing a weapon with the skill of my Inquisitor, and I don't hail from a noble background. I am also not an Andrastian.

Secondly, elves and dwarves and even qunari are not particularly that different from humans. Yeah, they're different species, but they're all humanoids with coterminous characteristics. It's not quite the same as, say, playing a shardmind or a thrI-kreen or a warforged.

Story fits well for all the races. Every possible Inquisitor is there because they have a reason to. As such the notion of the story fitting better with human makes little sense. If the story truly jut fits better with humans then why is Inquisition not a solely human organization ? Why were there non-Humans at the Temple of Sacred Ashes before the explosion.

In fact, as a huge arc, Elf actually fits the best with Mythal, Fen'Harel, Eluvians, Abelas, etc but that is neither here nor there.

Non Humans get good armor in multiplayer but not in singleplayer. Bioware's fault, not ours.

I always play a female human mage. I love elves and tried to play one in both DAO and DAI, but the frail look (in DAI) and the way they are with humans just didn't suit how kind and open-minded I am when I play. Especially the rude way you can talk to the King when he's being kind to you at Ostagar.

They look lean, not frail. You can also roleplay as an open minded and kind Dwarf or Qunari or Elf just fine. There is a dialogue option that allows us so.

I play all the races but I like playing humans as much as the other races.

Sure you are a human in real life but mages DO NOT EXIST in real life.   Neither do rogues or Warriors.

Mages in games are real life scientists, academics and scholars. Look at how they can change the minds of peoples and influence policies with a few words and handwaving.

Rogues in games are real life thieves, killers, investigators and adventurers.

Warriors in games are real life fighters, brawlers, boxers, soldiers, etc.

I am actually trying to understand. I do not play humans because one, they are humans and I am one and two, I will fall into the trap of self-inserting and self projection as opposed to role playing which then ends up with me taking issues that happen within the game personally.

*snip*

ok, the real reason i play humans is because if i make another 13 year old female elf, the temptation to lust after those elfy pixels will become too much.

Lol. Elves in fantasy age much slower and humans. That and they do not have wrinkles unless they are Elder Scrolls Elves. In DAI, it is implied that Elves once were capable of either natural immortality or magically induced immortality.

The reason humans are the most popular race is because people can relate to humans the most.

It becomes harder to put yourself in your character when you play as a midget, huge oxman or an elf.

It should go without saying that I'm obviously not speaking for everyone.

But isn't that the point of roleplaying ? Isn't that the whole point of fantasy ? To make the effort to play as something that you are fundamentally not ?
