Why Do You Play Human ?

Personally I find the non human cultures to be far more interesting and unique than the generic, medieval, Catholic stand-in human ones we are a part of. (some of the other human cultures seem more interesting but we only hear about their unique aspects briefly in passing or in codex entries) I also don't identify with someone who is privileged and pampered and accepted everywhere because I feel like an "outsider" in real life and have lead a life of struggle and hardship.

This is why I like playing humans in DA- because I get enough **** in real life, it's nice to play a character who is respected pretty much by default. I've found that a Mage Trevelyan is right on the edge of perfect for me- the race and name earns my character some amount of respect while her being a mage means I get to roleplay and imagine what it would be like to be a Circle Mage at this point in Thedas' history, never mind being a Circle Mage suddenly being revered as prophet. I've had a lot of fun digging through those layers, and it's a role the game supports pretty well throughout.

And I do think there is something to be said for the body models. The female qunari body type is closest to my own, but the height kind of gets me in my "awkward tall girl" spot where I feel self-conscious playing her. Dwarves are too short and elves are too thin. I can play them, but I don't identify with them as readily and, therefore, it's not as much fun.

I am actually trying to understand. I do not play humans because one, they are humans and I am one and two, I will fall into the trap of self-inserting and self projection as opposed to role playing which then ends up with me taking issues that happen within the game personally.

[...]

But isn't that the point of roleplaying ? Isn't that the whole point of fantasy ? To make the effort to play as something that you are fundamentally not ?

Where is the fun in not playing a game to the point where your self-insertion makes you take matters personally?

As an example, one of the strongest scenes in the Dragon Age franchise for me was the Templars taking away Bethany to the Circle after returning from the Deep Roads. I come from a very large and very close family of which I am the second oldest, so this scene was killing me. Being a very peaceful person, I suddenly wanted to rip those guys apart, fueled by the same kind of mega-protectiveness I know from whenever I believed my actual sister(s) to be in danger. It was an incredibly powerful moment, that I think could not have been as striking, had I only pretended to look at someone else's life. Actually this self insertion into this very family driven plot is the main reason I am one of the few longtime DA fans, having played the series in order of releases ever since, who still liked the second game the most.

I think you're with the a big group of people exploring entirely new horizons, while me as much others enjoy becoming a version of ourselves that we cannot be IRL. Either approach is fine, and most importantly, interesting.

Also I like to say there is no point in roleplaying at all. There is only gain, which is excitement and entertainment. Anything that toasts your goat.

Perhaps I will tone down a bit. I just get really tired when this post comes up. People need to just say "I don't like humans" instead of making excuses.

What they might find boring another person might find interesting and have the imagination to play them.

Human hate has been growing for quite a few years in this fandom though. Back during Origins....races were rarely mentioned in discussions. The onset of social media and the need to make everything politically correct has made humans the defacto punching bags

But you're right...I'll tone it down

But it's good that you're passionate about it. I don't know what's up with this human bashing, when Thedas human aren't like the Earth humans, Tolkien's humans, GOT's humans, or The Witcher's humans. Thedas human are just as interesting as the other races.

And besides, this fandom bashes a lot of things.

When I heard that DAI would have the option of different races for my PC, I was very pleased but then, when the game came out and I found out that that option was so badly implemented in the game, I stopped even thinking in building an inquisitor other than human.

First, in the fashion the story has been written, it doesn't seems to fit an inquisitor that is other than human. At least in the way it is currently presented in the game. Just the amusing questions the elf inquisitor (who is supposed to be of Dalish origin), makes to Morrigan, really break the immersion.

From a graphic standpoint, if at least the Qunari option would have allowed me to build one that looks as awesome as those in DA2 (specially the eyes and hair) and one that doesn't have his face and neck constantly clipping into his/her clothes, I may have considered this race as an option. Furthermore, they don't have enough content in their character development to look and act other than a horned, bodybuildered humans.

I don't play as a female PC in games, so my options, if I was even thinking in trying to build an elf inquisitor, were crashed further by the horrid, ridiculous famelic body, total lack of shoulders, male breast and broken arms of DAI male elves version. they really look crippled in this game.

Usually I play a human because I want to play a game as, myself, and do things they way I would in real life.  However, in DA:I I wanted to play a Joan or Arc, total believer, the Maker is guiding me playthrough and it made the most sense with human.

You are so right about that. And thats a good point.  Human's are different in every game.

Whats funny is I play Guild Wars 2 and that game gets bashed on because they made dwarves extinct in the game but also introduced two very interesting non human races that a lot of people hate.

I guess Game developers can never win...people will always complain about something.

I like playing as a human. I played elf and dwarf too, but I like playing as a human. Getting an extra ability point helps in the early game, and I wanted to be a Human Mage. What's so bad about that?

First off this game was going to be a human protagonist only game until they got an extra year to work on it then they've added elves , qunaries and dwarves, so the notion that the elf could be the one that best suits it is laughable at best.

People love to claim that this game is very Elven oriented as soon as you step foot in sky hold , it's not until the very end that it gets elven heavy ( temple of Mythal ) prior to going there it was all about the human conflicts cept for a couple of side quests.

As for why I play a Human, I can't really explain lol I've made Quizzies of other races but humans remain my favorite.

I wouldn't say that people Asuras I was under the impression that the opposite was true, most people I play with find them cute or funny.

It's an issue of personal taste, not how properly the races were implemented into the storyline. Some people better relate to the narrative through the lens of a Dalish elf, instead of an Andrastian human. Roleplaying as someone who believes in the elven gods, who views magic as a gift of the Creators, who feels isolated and alone among a plethora of Andrastian shemlen, and who aspires to help the Elvhen makes for a very different experience than playing as an Andrastian human among many other Andrastian humans.

I think some people simply have more of an interest in the elven related elements of the storyline than they did with the Andrastian human portions of the tale.

It makes no real sense for the Inquisitor to be Qunari or a Dwarf.

So and Elf or a Human is your best pick. Elf is interesting to be sure, but it's not as plausible that an elven Inquisitor  would endear enough trust in this society to end up with his/her own personal army and legion of worshipers.

There are far more implausible religions they could follow.

Humans are the most played? I'm actually surprised. With all the people on BSN going on about how they LOVE EXTRA RACES BEING BROUGHT BACK, THANK YOU BIOWARE, I LOVE YOU, I thought the other races would outweigh the humans. Huh, go figure. I play elves, myself.

You have to remember that BSN counts for a very small percentage of the actual player base.

From the stats that have been floating around, either surveys done by those in BSN or one published by Bioware themselves, humans still remain the primary racial choice of most players.

Why is this so ? I am curious so as to why would someone play as a human in a fantasy game, especially when they are given the choice to play non-humans.

I mean, you are already a human in real life so why would you play as a human in a setting where the fantastical and the imaginary reign supreme ?

The one extra ability point is rather meaningless considering the fact that Inquisitor can get 5 bonus ability points in game. The broken arms for male Elves are an issue but that can be mitigated somewhat if you wear good armor or mod the game to allow your male Lavellans to wear armor or other types of clothing.

So I am curious to hear about why people who play humans play them ? I have tried to play as one but never managed to finish playing them...

I play as an Elf, cuz it fits my real life culture, pepole may play as Humans cuz it fits theirs :D

Elves are whiny, Dwarves are to small and fat, Qunari well are Qunari. Humans are just right.

And whats the prob with fat pepole? I mean it.

I always play a female human mage. I love elves and tried to play one in both DAO and DAI, but the frail look (in DAI) and the way they are with humans just didn't suit how kind and open-minded I am when I play. Especially the rude way you can talk to the King when he's being kind to you at Ostagar.

Maybe becouse this "kind king" If you are a City Elf, lets and keeps your pepole live in the slums like animals? Oh wait, keeps fools at his nobillty, oh and again, I am sure it is not the first time the son of the arl of Denerim did that and I am sure it is not the first time he knew about it. And if you are Dailsh? Well he let Villages hunt you, and makes you run away wether your clan is friendly with humans OR NOT. Not much of a "Kind King" now is he?

To me, it's just not worth it to play as a dwarf or a qunari in this game. Elf is ok, but the frail looks bother me a bit (next to Solas and Sera the elf Inquisitor looks like a skinny teenager). This game was definitely made with a human in mind so it feels like playing as a different race is purely for aesthetic reasons because they act and talk like humans. But I always preferred playing as a human, probably because of just that, I'm human so I can identify myself more with the human race, therefore it's more enjoyable to me.

Defintly with human in mind? Solas romance. Temple of Mythal... All I gotta say.

I always play human as my canon playthrough. This began with tabletop RPGs. Often humans receive no special benefit (unlike DAI). I like the added challenge that gives. I never realized humans received the extra point in DAI until I read about it after the fact. I usually run through with other races, but I always start with human.

In DAO my favorite origin stories were noble and casteless dwarfs.

because the story fits better with humans

Origins while there were still ways to improve on it implemented the different races well
in DA I its a joke how for an example a freaking qunari or dwarf can be herald of andraste is ridiculous

its just lame fanservice

One of my reasons is that I just think that the humans look better. Or perhaps I just prefer the humans I can make with the CC over the other races. I've always played humans in fantasy cRPGs. They tend to look the best (to me), have the most balanced statistics, and have the wider variety of skills available to them. And of course I am a human, so I can relate to them. Granted, I can't relate to being a mage or killing people, or any number of other things we get up to in these games, but at least I have some connection with the human race.

Although my first play of DAO was as a dwarf, I'm just not that into playing a non-human. /shrug

As far as the original question. I played a Qunari female to the end and a Human female. My primary reason for choosing these two races is I could actually make them fierce and sexy or cute and sexy. I tried real hard to make the qunari cute but I just couldn't pull it off. Fortunately for me at least absolutely terrifying if done right can be sexy as well. I wanted my qunari's enemies to die with a raging boner while I wanted them to think how sweet my human looks even as she electrocutes them to death or chops them up. Sort of like with a kitten. "Ah she just took my arm off."

I couldn't quite do this with the elf and well dwarfs can't be mages.
