I liked Origins too, but it was a better story suited for multi races as well. It's like they tried to apply that formula here, but this was a story conceived differently. Inquisitors and Wardens are different beasts. And they had more time back then. lots and lots of time, if I recall. Could've sworn they had like 5 yrs or something. Probably isn't possible to do it anymore.

Well i have read on here (not sure how true but feels right) that early Inquisition was human only but a backlash or something they decided to add other races, i'm glad they did personally but i can see the very tacked on feel of the other races in the end product, which sadly for really brings a lot down as a alternate race player.

I like the idea of multi races, don't get me wrong. I just think it works out better when you conceive a story in a way that suits it best (like DAO... or many RPGs really). These are big decisons that should be fleshed out early. But by the time they decided on multi-races here, it was probably too late to rework the concept too much.

Basically, I think this could have worked better in a more DA2 like style.. with a more focused protagonist, who had more personal ties to the themes with the Circle or Chantry. Instead of being like DAO and the Warden. That's just me though.

But I'm not against other races.. just to say it again. I'd love a similarly focused elven game or dwarven game.

It is fascinating to see so much...resistance...towards playing Dwarves...

I get why people do not like to play Elves in this game, they do look underfed in some armors and they have broken arms.

I get why people do not like to play Qunari either, because in previous games, the Qunari truly looked menacing. They looked massive, muscular yet lean, their faces were not very human and they had claws. Now they look like some overgrown mutant human with horns. Iron Bull for example has the head of a peanut. In fact, they look somewhat comical.

But Dwarves in DAI are just Dwarves. They have always looked like that in almost all fantasy games except Elder Scrolls where Dwarves = Dwemer = Deep Elves.

I for one are fond of playing as Dwarven warriors. Their stout powerful frames is one that can take serious punishment and dish out serious punishment.

Does this mean that the Bioware fanbase are heightists ?

I like them,  but at the same time, don't take them very seriously. They're kind of my a-hole characters in DAO. Heh.. I just don't view them in a heroic light. At best, they're funny.

I'm not heighist, but Dwarves are freakishly short.

I feel short enough as it is every day, I don't want to play a character who's even shorter! ;)

Never said it was a blow to my self esteem, did I? Trust me, playing a character in a game has very little impact on my self esteem no matter what kind of character I play. I just enjoy playing a character of around average height, that's all.

Why do people limit themselves to one race only? If a game has options, you can bet I am going to try them all.

My mother has played this game as both a female Qunari and a female elf (yes, my 66 year old mom is a BAMF like that).  I've played through four times, three times as a human, once as an elf. As a woman, I almost always play as a female character as well. And since I'm a brown person, I have a tendency to make my character have coloring/features like me as well, even if she doesn't look like me at all. In so many games your character is a predetermined straight male.  So it is nice to make one to reflect oneself. Since I am 5'5" and therefore not dwarfy, nor am I 8 feet tall or have horns or pointed ears, most of the time I pick human female.

I will say my 3rd inquisitor was the most like me in terms of looks and decisions, the current elf is the least in terms of looks,  inquisition decisions, eye color, everything (I gave her purple eyes!)

I don't create only human characters but i like to playing as them first because humans irl can't be as badass as in an fantasy settings where we can see humans fighting against the supernatural, and overwhelming odds, but surpassing all them
Also because i can identify more to my character, makes role-playing easier

Dwarves are small. Really, that's the only reason I don't play them. Sue me :P
I cannot, for the life of me, seem to make a Qunari face in the character creator that I can deal with. The fact that Vitaars show up during cutscenes completely killed any incentive I had to play a Qunari.

So that leaves the Elves and the Humans.

Romancing npcs as a dwarf is odd and unpleasing to watch. Just look at how Dorian or the Dwarf IQ magically grow and shorten to make cut scenes "work" no thanks.  Sadly the same growth spurts happened during my Qunari playthrough which made me stop and play a human again.

When playing almost any RPG, I have a habit of playing a human first because it allows me to play a character as close to me as possible from a roleplaying perspective. When I play a human, I generally create a backstory and make choices that resemble myself and what I would do in that situation. Later on though, I dive into the roleplaying.

My first playthrough was as a 2H Human Warrior. He was generally honorable, pragmatic and logical, a serious fellow. Now I'm on a second playthrough as a female Dalish Archer. She's more sentimental, conniving in her dealings, and she hates her title of Herald of Andraste. I have to say though, I'm enjoying my current character a lot more. The game seems much more personal to my character now because of all the Elven lore and the plot. Not to mention that Solas romance ;-;

I'm surprised non-human races were added so late in the dev process, given the kerfluff on the same topic with DA2. I think DAI's classic "despised prisoner" to "celebrated hero" story arc works just as well, if not better, with a non-human.

Everyone in the game treats the Inquisitor as something more/other than just human anyway.  Even my human Inquisitor never really felt the same sort of easygoing camaraderie my Hawke and Dalish Warden did with their friends.  At least my Dalish Inquisitor got to share a special (non-romantic) confidence with Solas, along with a more personal reason to stop Cory.

That said, I've yet to roll a non-mage human.  Do people still make objections to you being Inquisitor the way they get all scandalized by a mage/non-human Inquisitor?

Elves have extremely wimpy body structures.
Dwarfs are short.
Qunari look like giant white skinned devils.
Humans look human.

That's probably the thoughts of the average gamer.

I can't seem to make a dwarf who doesn't look like a creep, the elves are thin to the point of just looking weird, and as much as I love the Qunari, their armors suck.

I play humans most, but I like elves and dwarves too.  I'm not too keen on qunari, but I'll play one eventually I'm sure.

I don't play games to escape reality and I don't play games to insert myself into the protagonist role.  Therefore, I make unique characters who are their own entities.  Humans tend to present the fewest restrictions (both game-wise and stemming from my own idiosyncratic personal craziness), so I play them more often than the other ones.  For instance, I've played humans of both sexes, but I've never played a male elf and I have no interest in doing so.  Likewise for a female dwarf.

Also, humans tend to have the most potential to be visually appealing to me in a variety of different ways.  I've made some pretty sexy dwarves in my day too, but they tend to all share qualities that I associate with dwarfinesss.  Humans tend to have fewer of these restrictions because they don't seem to have a specific visual archetype that they fit into.

I love Dwarves, anything small really, Gnomes, Halflings, Hobbits etc.. If there are are tiny races i will pick them over anything else because i think they look awesome and tiny.

I also very much enjoy the tiny races cultures and have more character..

Just look at Varric and Dagna both ooze character, Blackwall, Dorian, Cole, Iron bull, Cullen all may as well be a dead fish character wise..

I guess its an acquired taste but they just seem to make me enjoy my game more.

Bitches pls. The story only works 'best' for humans in the beginning, with the mage-templar thing being the focus. The entire impetus of the game is elven though. The big revelations are all elven. And to everyone saying it doesn't make sense for a non-human to be the Herald: no ****. That's kinda a really major point for the first half of the game.

I don't play humans unless I'm going mage. Otherwise they're just too damn acceptable.

That's more poor writing and the game designed with a one track story in my opinion not the other tacked on races faults..

The best thing about Origins for me was each race had their own story first then it narrowed into the main campaign, it helped build on the races and helped with re-playability.

Inquisition is basically aimed at humans..

Seems logical though.

In a story with a war between Mages and Templars, a story with political intrigue and the fate of nations hanging in the balance, and one about stopping a giant breach in the sky and the one who opened it, why would it make any sense for a bunch of caravan traveling gypsy elves, a highly isolationist people whose spy network is their only connection to the rest of the world, and a bunch of people who never left the underground, to be the most important ones in this story?

1st run: qunari tank, very cool.

2nd run (just beginning): human rogue

I am liking both. May be the reason why some prefer human, as others say, is that the story fits more.
