Sorry Bioware that's not how real life works

why are we back at this approval brownose jerk system again?

Rivalry system was far better, it could have used some fine tuning

I hated Cassandra, absolutely hated her. I did her personal quests to ensure that she could concentrate on the task at hand, then I allowed Varic to troll her with his book. Later I told her to do whatever she wanted to do with the seekers. Then all of a sudden she starts calling me my friend. The hell? I would tell you to leave if I could

You go out of your way to help someone and gain their approval, and then you're shocked when they like you in return.

I think you might be the one who doesn't know how this works, not Bioware.

Today I learned I in real life have a slider scale visible only to those interacting with me which gives them precise indicators between -100 and 100 of my feelings for them.  Cuz, real life.

The approval system didn't seem to do much. Cassandra 'greatly disapproved' of pretty much every big decision I picked, but it didn't stop her from praising the Inquisitor at every turn. The worst I recall is her offhandingly mentioned she 'doesn't always agree' with the Inquisitor, but it was almost played off as a attribute instead of a detriment. I have no idea if that line is even based on previous choices or not.

It was rather glaring after I recruited the mages and she's complaining about them and then corrects herself and says "Oh, it sounds like I'm blaming you, aren't I?"

Uhh....aren't you? Because, you know, the Inquisitor made the decision that led to this? Which you 'greatly disapproved' of?

That's because she's a team player.  Disagreements are internal/private.  You show a united face to everyone else.  She knows this.  Just another indication of how wonderfully written her character is.

That's actually not brown nosing.

I'm fairly certain you aren't aware of what these terms mean.

First of all, there weren't any private disagreements either. Cassandra was just as much if not more supportive in private conversations than in public ones.

Secondly, It's every companion. The approval of the choices and dialogue I picked seemed to be pretty fairly mixed, but every companion still gushed about how great the Inquisitor was, with the possible exception of Vivianne.

Which, if toned down somewhat, would be perfectly fine. It can be nice having supportive and likeable side characters, but I'm just wondering to myself what the approval system did at all.

Maybe doing everyone's 'loyalty mission' canceled out whatever disapproval they had.

Yes, "team players" as I said.  Except Sera of course if you get on her bad side, but that's why she's so adorable.  I get it, you hate Cassie.  That's cool, it's your choice and  your personal opinion about her.   You're wrong, but  you're free to be wrong, so you got that going for ya.

Yeah, because you're going out of your way to earn their approval and help them when they need it.

"Hey, that guy helped me out in a serious time of need and he agrees with a lot of what I say. He must be a pretty cool dude."

Err, no, I actually liked Cassandra the most of the characters in the game. I can like her and still raise my eyebrows over how she basically praises the Inquisitor for recruiting the Mages despite 'greatly disapproving' a moment ago.

Oops, that was my fault.  I was thinking of the OP saying he hated Cassie when I typed that.  Sorry.

I was unaware that someone agreeing with another was, by definition, mindless. Or that liking someone was a dumb basis for considering them a friend.

Gosh gee whiz, I learn so much from BSN.

She praises because Inquisitor took action, she might not have liked that  Inquisitor recruited Mages but she values and approves of the fact that the Inquisitor acted when it was needed.

It's more of an audit of the approval system than a criticism of the dialogue. Like I said, I'm fine with companions being supportive. Inquisition did take it a bit far, but I imagine that's unrelated to this issue.

People don't care if you treat the world badly if you treat them well. It's like Kurt Cobain said, "I don't care what you think unless it is about me."

It's because the difference between "Slightly Approve," "Approve," and "Greatly Approve" is just one point of approval. This means that getting three "Slightly Approves" is enough to cancel out one "Greatly Disapprove." But since you're more likely to notice the one "Greatly Disapprove" at the end of a story mission than the three "Slightly Approves" scattered throughout several hours of gameplay, you might start thinking that your standing with a character is worse than it actually is.

EDIT: Actually, the Dragon Age Wiki is reporting that the differences are actually 1, 5, and 20. In this case, I don't really know why companions seem so approving. I've had Solas praise me for my great leadership even though I conscripted the mages and recruited the Wardens.

Seems reasonable. I've known people that I've actively tried to get rid of because I just couldn't stand them, and they would remain steadfastly convinced that I was their friend. Even after finally giving up on all tactful methods and just telling them to go away.

I thought that the approval was pretty spot  on, i didn't  spot any instances where a character went out of his/her way to approve. I was not very fond of the rivalry system in DA2 it was too simplistic, borderline comical.

I''ve got the opposite problem. I got Vivienne to hate me but she still won't get lost or attack me. God, I miss playing ruthless characters.
