How will the future of the Mass Effect IP differentiate itself from Star Citizen?

I'm a long-time Mass Effect fan having bought and played through all the collector's editions of MA1-3, and I was wondering; apart from the famous Bioware tradition of relationships in their RPGs - How will the future of the Mass Effect IP differentiate itself from what Star Citizen is developing?.

What areas can it strike out and differentiate itself from SC seeing as though the persistent universe in Star Citizen appears to be so sandbox and Mass Effect is loosely tied to a story-arc with free-exploration strung throughout.

Strength or weakness and how do you think Mass Effect could define itself for another great trilogy?.  Thanks.

well they are both round and fruits.  they can both made into drinks and are sour if eaten before being ripe. one is orange in color. the other is red.

Different universes.

Also, as far as I know, Star Citizen does not feature strong story-focused narrative like Bioware games do. I'm also quite skeptical about its success but will refrain from judgment for now. Anyway, there is no indication that ME:Next will be released anytime close to Star Citizen, meaning they are not really in direct competition.

Story:

BioWare's focus has always been on a strong largely directed narrative with (as you pointed out) strong characters. I'm not sure exactly what SC's story will be like if it's even supposed to have one, but I can imagine the large persistent universe would likely rule out any strong direction.

Gameplay:

They're two completely separate games. Sure, SC has a third person mode, but that's mostly where the similarities end. Mass Effect is a TPS with an emphasis on squad control and power usage, whereas SC is a space simulator with ground combat. Like the story, ME's gameplay will probably be more directed and tied to the narrative than SC's. ME will almost certainly be a faster paced game, where the player spends less time aggregating resources and upgrading ships and more time simply completing missions.

Regardless of SC's success, I think that there will always be room for a solid RPG space opera.

Agree.

As a keen backer of SC I am definitely looking forward to both.

SC will have a single player campaign which should have a decent story ala Wing Commander but it will then carry into a persistent universe like traditional MMOs.

Both games will have player choices and consequences and hopefully awesome cinematics. I just hope Next ME doesn't try to be like DA:I and attempt to blend MMO mechanics with single player campaign.

Aside from being in sci-fi universes....Mass Effect and Star Citizen have about as much in common as Star Trek TOS and Babylon 5. So I'm not sure they NEED to do anything else to differentiate themselves.

Just by being Mass Effect.

Totally different games, dunno where there should be a need for "differentiating itself from Star Citizen".

But what I actually hope is, that SC's visual quality and level of detail has an impact on all other upcoming PC games, motivating other studios to push the limits of state of the art PC hardware.

Next consoles are fine and all, but SC seems to be way beyond that already in its early alpha state.

I know ME4 will be a cross plattform title with (once more) graphics limited by console hardware, but at least give us higher resolutions (up to 4K?) and something that actually deserves the name HD textures.

Ah good the requisite compare Star Citizen to any other sci fi game regardless of how little they resemble eachother thread.

I would imagine just continuing what they're doing and not collapsing under the weight of their own ambition and overinflated fan expectations should suffice.

I'm telling you man like a godamn lead balloon.

I see them as two totally different IPs. The only thing the two have in common is that they're both sci-fi.

Space-flight sim vs 3rd person shooter / RPG hybrid?
Single player/MMO combo vs Single player with some multiplayer features tacked on? (By all means , Bioware, keep Mass Effect as far from MMO's as you can, and you'll be fine)

I don't really so how the two would even remotely compete with one another in any way different from apples competing with oranges.

IIRC all concerns about Destiny and ME were dispelled on day 1 of Destiny being out (for those who were worried) probably the same thing here.

Mass Effect will differentiate itself by coming out, and possibly by not sucking due to being developed by competent developers who know better than to try to make a game everything and the kitchen sink. Star Citizen will try to do everything, but do nothing well. It will be the Fable of the crowdfunded world (although I guess Godus already is that). It promises you the stars, but it will just be a ceiling draped in strings of LED lights. The new Mass Effect, whether good or not, will be competently executed.

Why is this a topic? The games are nothing alike.

How is the new Star Fox going to differentiate itself from Halo 5: Guardians? Gee Idk, maybe by being Star Fox.

Funny thing is, I watched some FPS Star Citizen video and thy seem to have something like mobile cover very similar to Omnishields.

But I think ME4 will have much more to offer in the a$$ and ti#ies department and gotta be enough differenciation imho.

Along with the Biotic powers, the Engineering abilities, vastly different Alien species, Ship designs, weapon designs, the entire aesthetics of the worlds.....shall I go on?

They are different from the outset. ME universe is unique. Its heavily story driven. Its not a flight sim. At all.

Still waiting for actual Star citizen content. The dogfight-module is extremely limited, the hangar is useless and the first-person camera horrible .

They should get their priorities straight. Concentrate on the spaceflight and not on the FPS-module. Elite:Dangerous did it right.

Good thing I got SC for free.
