Servants were only required at the beginning until the person learned to draw sustenance completely from the Fade.

I'd say that immortality is related to this and that's why the elves lost immortality as they lost connection with the Fade, possibly because of blood magic? The taint?

I'd wager that it might be taint-related. Everything seems to be possibly leading back to the Taint.

Or it could be the reverse: the taint is the result of a screw up, created by the separation of the elves from whatever magic made them immortal. It's an independent source of magic, it makes people functionally immortal, and it can sustain things.

You know, you could be onto something there.  Since lyrium is the embodiment of magic, it is possible that its creation (since there's no proof that lyrium has been around pre-Veil) was a result of the elves losing their immortality since we know that both their immortality and their proficiency with magic were simply due to being elven.  Since the Black City is seen as the source of the taint and there's lyrium present both in the physical world and the Fade, it's entirely possible that the taint corrupted the lyrium it came into contact with in the Fade and was then transferred to the physical world that way.  Since the only sources of lyrium in the physical world are underground, the taint could easily have spread to whatever creatures came into contact with the red lyrium, soon spreading to dwarves and other races on Thedas before eventually becoming the massive darkspawn horde that we know today.

But then, we do know that Cory went to the Black City and the First Blight came around not all that long after he and his crew returned, so maybe my theory is better suited to be a theory on the origins of red lyrium.  On second thought, that makes more sense.

We don't in fact know how the elves perpetuated their immortality. Solas says it was a byproduct of their magic, so binding to a spirit might not be far off the mark. As for encouraging cultural isolationism, I guess he should have told them to herd themselves into an alienage instead?

That is the primary issue for the People - the freedom to follow their religion and the right to practice their culture. Why should the Dalish be vilified for refusing to capitulate to the Chantry or Andrastian society? The Dalish isolating themselves from Andrastian kingdoms (after the Chantry outlawed their religion and outright attack them for their cultural and religious beliefs) is a matter of survival. A nomadic lifestyle away from Andrastian humans allows them to govern themselves without submitting to forced conversion or human rule, to allow their mages to exist independent of the Chantry controlled Circles, and to live in freedom.

Considering that a semi-permanent settlement of Dalish is said to exist near a Rivaini city with humans who follow the Natural Order (and that the two are reputed to get along quite well), the issue for the Dalish is with the Chantry and the followers of the Andrastian faith.

Correction, lyrium only exists in the physical world as per Justice.  He says the lyrium we see in the Fade is just the reflection of a mortal's dream.

Eh....the red lyrium in the Fade during Here Lies the Abyss looks very, very real to me.

Still though, it requires regular lyrium to exist somewhere to be infected first, no? So wouldn't it stand to reason that there indeed exists lyrium in the Fade that can be tainted?

red lyrium can be grown independently of regular lyrium, otherwise the red templars wouldn't be able to use regular people from Sahrnia to do it

He also says a lot about the differences between demons and spirits, yet Solas says that if one expects a certain kind of spirit to be a demon, it will adapt to fit that perception.  Either way, the Fade's confusing.   :P

Not sure about you guys, but I don't think Dalish rogues should have the ability to unlock doors in this game.

Dalish clans avoid going near human settlements as a general principle. "But clan Lavellan..." no, they just trade with them. That's different from spending time in a town.

I'm pretty sure Inquisitor Lavellan never had to deal with a locked door in his/her life. Or doors in general.

Judging by the amount of chests present in the Dalish camp in DA:O, I can see them being skilled in understanding chest locks - maybe combining that with some dialogue with human locksmiths encountered while trading, Lavellan was able to adapt to picking door locks?

They use locks. It's not like they're totally primitive.

Maybe Varric or Sera taught Lavellan how to pick locks?

You do have a point, though.  Unless Lavellan is the mischievous sort (i.e.: picking the locks on the chests the clan has), there wouldn't be much need for lockpicking skills among the Dalish.  It's not like the Dalish really bother stealing stuff from people's homes when they would have little use for most things beyond necessities.

Meh, I'm just going to headcanon that Varric taught my f!Lavellan how to pick locks.   :P

The funny thing about that fact is that I totally headcannoned my Lavellan as imediately liking the sweets made by the humans, since it's pretty impossible to get them in the woods

I also wonder about clan Lavellan's trading.

Dalish elves already hunt and craft everything they need, so what do they ever buy from humans?

Besides sugar, anyway.

For weapons, Dalish use daggers, arrows and nets. Ironbark weapons, along with carved halla horns, are highly valued and are used to trade with humans for things they cannot make on their own.

I would assume this means metals, locks, etc.

Source comes from a non-Dalsih cook who "heard" that Dalish steal sugar. IMO, the source is biased, and should not be used to reflect on the Dalish as a whole.
