It is, but so is dragon age... and the key is dragon age is aweosme for totally different things. Trying to become skyrim is a waste because if I want to play skyrim and be in a giant sandbox i can... for story, i want a bioware title.

I don't want dragon age to be skyrim. I want it to be dragon age, and if they try really hard to copy others, the thing that made them great will vanish.

Hence the fetch quests, the lack of unique companion dialogue for entire maps, and the tedious farming.

I want to play dragon age when I play dragon age.

My point was that they tried to emulate skyrim and failed miserably at doing so.

Even if the tactical mode wasn't garbage, and the a.i had fully customizable controls it wouldn't change the fact that these big open areas you unlock with power points are a 100% waste of time. They are all exactly the same, the only difference being visuals. It's pathetic game design.

Sadly even their tactical mode is horrendous and their a.i customization is non-existent and the default a.i is just ridiculously dumb. For example an archer won't even attempt to step away from a dragon or enemies and continue firing because there is no way to set that up in their a.i options and for whatever reason the default a.i in this game is some of the dumbest that I've seen in recent years.

I kind of disagree with you about dragon age taking notes from skyrim or however you want to describe that. Just because you make a game open-world doesn't mean its a skyrim clone. I would consider open-world design an upgrade over something as linear as origins is. The problem here is they simply failed at the basics of what makes an rpg truly good as an rpg. This whole game is just lazy from its story to its story missions to these useless maps. It feels rushed, and the multiplayer is just tacked on crap.

I mean baldur's gate and fallout 1 and 2 were open world games, just because they had isometric views means absolutely nothing though. What I'm saying is, elements of skyrim can be used as upgrades for rpg's. In this particular case, they failed to utilize them properly with inquisition. I mean they did this in the laziest most ridiculously inept fashion they possibly could. I can't even believe they released the game in this state to be honest. It's like playing a really bad free 2 play japanese mmo.

DA:I is a better game than DA2. I actually think I enjoyed DA2 more.

Kind of a weird place to be.

DA:I just feels so... impersonal compared to basically every BioWare game since, like, Shadows of Undrentide. The character and story content is all well-done, and I enjoy it very much. It's just that there's so much wandering without engaging stories in between, which is something I'm not used to from BioWare. Still, I think they're going in an alright direction. They just need to bring back a deeper level of NPC engagement and trim the fat a bit. Hell, you know what would be great DLC for this game? Just adding a bunch of deeper side-content to the areas they already have. Save them bundles on designing new areas too, so they could put that DLC budget into conversations and cinematic animations.

The main problem that is super super disheartening is that I don't even complete these quests because I'm engaged, interested, or attached to what I'm doing (isn't the case for some quests, though,) I complete it because:

1. I need to level up my characters so I won't get smashed in the upcoming, and actually fun main mission
2. I need to find better gear/crafting materials for said actually fun main mission
3. "Eh, why not, it's something to do"

I feel like this is mostly how inquisition works and fundamentally it's not necessarily bad, but it's the meat of the system that's rather stale. I wouldn't mind going out and finding new gear and materials for a main story mission and/or Keep snatching if the quests were actually fun, meaningful, and engaging. You'd get the best of both worlds.

That being said I still like the game. But this was a huge issue for me.

I don't like to speculate or accuse without knowing the facts, but I do get a sense that (as Sera would say) a "big hat" made the executive decision to turn Dragon Age into Skyrim, solely because Skyrim makes a ton of money.

As a result Inquisition is two different games that aren't very compatible: A perfectly good BioWare game (the story, Haven and Skyhold portions), and a large, lovely looking, open-world snooze-fest clogged with filler to hide the fact that no roleplaying happens there. Ever. lol

A 10 hour story is not what bioware is known for at all.

My first play through I did everything. All others I only do enough to advance the story, which is mostly closing rifts and that is not boring. I constantly run missions on the war table to collect resources as I almost never collect them myself. So I guess I don't understand why its boring to you. Maybe its not your type of game?

Right there with you in that weird place. I can look at Inquisition and see all the ways it's a technically accomplished game, but at the same time, it just feels lacking in some intangible quality that makes it fun and engaging; it just feels sort of impersonal. DAO was rightly called out for being ugly and rife with technical issues, but my god, that game has so much heart.

The only problem for me would be to force myself to play the game again for the extra content. It is just such a chore.

I cannot imagine what its like not to get Banter.. Im getting banter so much, its almost conversation.. I switch my followrs constantly however... I make sure to use them all.. In my day, if you didnt take a teammate, they didnt get exp, lol!

Totally agree with OP.. One of the worst BW games to date.. Pretty sure, however, cartoony! I prefer the Origins graphics... Dark, gorey, etc.. This plastic, vibrant cap is for kiddies...Not THE rpg developer!

@Aran - I have the same problem with party banter, it is a bug which they have been trying to fix since the game came out...

As I'm on Xbox 360 that's just one of the various bugs I had to put up with to complete the game and it did made it even more of a chore.

To the OP, I perfectly agree with you as it does really feel like 'Dragon Age does Skyrim (badly)'. I really, really miss the full tactics and ability wheel from the previous games as well as their storytelling style. I think that this will be the last Bioware game I buy as I really don't like the direction they have taken :(

I very much agree with the OP - the game is actually TOO big. And what I mean by that, is that Bioware created a game world so large that they struggled to fill it with MEANINGFUL content.

If you played through only the content with any meaning at all, you'd end up with a very short and shallow game, even. The side content only creates the illusion of it being a big game. It isn't. It is just a big game world.

Take the shard collecting for example. You spend the ENTIRE GAME collecting shards and opening doors with these shards, only to get to the very end of it and....open another door. Wow, really?! That is the best they could come up with?

Another aspect is the incredibly dull and lifeless NPCs. Even compared to DA2 - especially compared to DA2 - NPCs just have no life in them, made worse by the Skyrim-ish conversations without cut scenes to allow you to actually connect to the NPC visually.

And the Inquisitor has absolutely NO personal investment in the game. He/she is as detached as they come, like a totally neutral narrator.

Even the voiceless warden felt more INVOLVED in the game in DAO.

I do think the environments, crafting, war table, and many other aspects of the game was done very well, but Bioware completely failed at the RPG elements of the game, resulting in a totally forgettable experience.

I honestly don't know what happened. I get the impression the writers that did such an incredible job in the previous games, have just lost their passion.

There are more memorable moments in the humble DA2 than in this vast DAI...

I felt like I could finish DA2 and immediately start a new game and enjoy it just as much. I feel weary at the thought of doing that with DAI.

I've said it before - Bioware made a huge attempt to appeal to the Walmart market of gaming. They succeeded. But they also completely lost the quality they had from the previous games.

I had literally like three banters in my 175h of gameplay. Made me hate the game even more. Frigging silence everywhere. Thanks Bio, I can´t even initiate discussion on my own.

I may not get banter, but im still plagued with Directx ctd's, and total failure on the hardware.. Shutdowns.. I get the directx sound, but then the whole pc shuts off.. My sound keeps going in and out completely.. Full ambient sdounds, rain, running water, even war in the distance, then suddenly its like a bug, and it all just stops! That with the fps allover the place..

The war table is one of the cheapest crap ideas ive played.. Its a way to pretend theyve made content, without actually having to do it! Why wouldnt you use the war table for all the stupid gathering, and menial tasks the leader of the Inquisition has no business doing, and let us actually do those awesome 'sounding' missions we only read about from the war table?!?

I agree with you, OP. I just can't finish my second playthrough. If only the main quest was actually amazing, maybe I would make an effort to go through the boredom that is the sidequests, but to me, the main story is just ok, not great. When I first finished the game, I didn't feel any sense of satisfaction or accomplishment. It didn't help that the ending was completely rushed and anti-climatic, so yeah. Not looking forward to go through it again.

Totally with you OP.

DAI is probably "good" on a console....on PC it's "OK" if you can play at all and if you get some banter...it is certainly not not great...certainly not GOTY

DAO was and still is great. Made before Bioware lost it's creative heart....mediocrity left....and before it became just a brandname owned by EA.

I've thought about this many times while rambling through Thedas. So many beautiful vistas, and ruins, and mountain ranges, and grassy plains, and not a single thing worth doing in any of them. There's no need to create new environments for DLC; eighty percent of the game world is already wasted space. Use that.

Have plenty to do in these areas for my campaign. Currently trying to find an unmarked valley, and have come across Rifts, enemy encampments, slaves, and valuable resources in the Hissing Wastes. This is being done after liberating The Lion, and all it entails.

While I get that some may find these tasks trivial, I do not; enjoy releasing slaves, rescuing refugees, sealing the Breach and rifts, and being a thorn in the side of Cory and his minions.

You captured my feelings about those side "quests" perfectly! I loved the game when I was playing the main quest, and the handfull of side-quests, and compantion quests that where enjoyable, or when I had "proper" companion interaction (a.k.a. the scenic ones). But the rest is so lifeless & empty. Sadly.

But DA:O's gameplay wasn't good either. It was clunky, sluggish, horrendously balanced, and actually just kinda boring. Half a decade in development and it still needed vastly more work. The best thing I can say about it is that it controlled well on my platform of choice. This series has never been more than middling.

Maybe you feel that way, but I enjoyed Origins.

Most people enjoyed Origins.. Hence its critical acclaim so many years later.. Some people just follow the cool kids, whihch today is hating on the better quality game.. Needing to lie to themselves, in an attempt to not feel ripped off with mediocrity... The game was/is too hard for some, lol...It doesnt hold your hand the whole way, and you have to actually read codex entries.. "Whats a codex?"

Im willing to bet, a majority of its haters, got it for the first time free when they got Inquisition, and are judging it by todays standards.. Not to mention, its an entirely different genre, and wont appeal to those who DA:I does.. most agree, DA:I was tuned for todays youth.. (dumbed down) The ones who all get 1st place, and have only known positive reinforcement..

@Elhanan.. We know.. Youve said the exact same thing 12,000 times.. We get it.. You got some special edition of Inquisition that had more content, extra banter, no coding problems, and was apparently sent back in time from 2yrs from now, when its finally finished..

Oh, and  m+kb work just fine..  There.. Saved you another post...
