he's a creep, who makes homophobic comments....

also Dorian's father could quite easily be described as homophobic, though that gets into the murky territory of "was he solely looking out for his dynasty or was their some deeper issue going on there"

I don't see Gamlen as homophobic.  Anti-elf, sure, but not homophobic.  IIRC, he doesn't say anything about Anders' gender if you're a male Hawke.  He just hates elves.

As far as Dorian's dad, eh, murky waters like you said.  I never got that impression, but to each their own.

In any case, the lore shouldn't be changed just because a few want to express their RL disgust at a fictional character's homosexuality.   With that, I think I'm bowing out of this thread.   Have fun everyone.   :)

I don't think that's homophobia at all.  I think in Gamlen's case, he's a creep.  He makes screwed up comments no matter what.   Making comments about wanting to see two women in bed together isn't homophobic to me.  Making that statement one of those people is your niece is just screwed up.

The whole "which one is the girl" comment comes if you hook up with Fenris as a male Hawke.  It's more of a case of elf prejudice than homophobia.  Stating otherwise gives the impression Gamlen truly gives enough of a crap one way or the other about...pretty much anything unless you get him and Charade to start talking.

My personal favorite is the one where he expresses his curiosity about what it's like between two women, despite one of them being his niece. Stay classy, Uncle Creepster.

I thought he did make a comment with a Male hawke/Anders romance, something like "which one is the girl?"

I misread that as Republicans for a moment.

What's the difference.

That's only with Fenris.

I think does come across as homophobic to a degree.  Referring to one of the guys in a gay relationship as 'the girl' in a derogatory way seems pretty homophobic.  If I recall correctly, he makes the same 'girl' comment to mHawke and Anders.  I've only done the Fenris romance once and I'm sure I've heard that comment from Gamlen on multiple playthroughs.  Dorian's father doesn't come across as homophobic to me because of the reasons that you and steelcan state.

But just because there's one homophobic guy, doesn't mean that homophobia is a thing that would make sense in the game.  I totally agree with you on that point.  It's already been well established that homophobia is not really a thing outside of one guy in one passing comment.

Coming back in to reply:

IIRC, he said that to Fenris/Male Hawke.  In any case, I don't think Gamlen should be taken as a reflection of the overwhelming majority of attitudes in Thedas.   :P

Well, he only says it in the Fenris romance and it may be due to elven males looking girly.

Why are people who dislike LGBT people & characters the same people who generally go on & on about it? I already saw the OP's opinion on BW's "gay agenda" in another thread, making a new thread to b*tch about it wasn't necessary

What does he say to mHawke and Anders then?  I know he insults all four of the romances.  I can't seem to find it after googling it a bit.

His comment about Anders and FemHawke is probably the least insulting.  He just says she's her mother's daughter for living with an apostate.  I don't know what he says to mHawke/Anders, though *shrugs*

Dorian being gay is tangential to the issue he and his father have. It's Dorian's refusal to be in a marriage and procreate. So all this silly culture war outrage for nothing.

^This. Anyone with a brain can see this. The issue would be still there if Dorian was straight and still refuse to marry the girl he was set with.

Meh... If this was what Bioware wanted Dorian's personal quest to be about there would have been an option for, at the very least, a Human Inquisitor(or just an Inquisitor who took the nobility perk) to agree with Papa Pavus and encourage Dorian to suck it up, get married, and have a kid(especially since there's no doubt in my mind that the dialogue option would have been available in if Dorian were straight)...  And unlike outright homophobia, such an option would have been in-line with the cultural setting of Thedas, as well.

You know... Either that or "screw this, I'm leaving and not taking either side"...

That's the part that I don't understand.  You don't have to support him.  You can't be homophobic or side with his father.  But you don't have to support him.  You can be neutral.
