Am I the only one who wants to see the Dark Energy plot being used in the next Mass Effect? It has potential.

For those who don't know what it was:

Spoiler

For further details, you can read this article.

I believe the general idea of Dark Energy causing the end of the world could be used again, without the whole Reaper thing of course. We can see in ME2 that something's happening. Haestron's sun is aging prematurely as a result of the influence of dark energy. In addition, Gianna Parasini of Noveria Internal Affairs mentions that her superiors are worried about the potential issues of their clients' increased dark energy interests.

Maybe people would start rejecting Biotics and blaming it all on them and some sort of civil wars would start. They could go as far as killing Biotics. I would love to see conflict between Biotics and non-Biotics. Biotics fearing to be killed because they're ''not normal''. Them having to hide and live in secret. Kind of like the Apostate/Templar conflicts from the Dragon Age series. The Apostates being the Biotics, and the Templars being pretty much everyone else. Some Anti-Biotics groups/organizations could be formed. The Military would get involved and it would just become one huge galactic wide conflict. All scientist would start searching for a solution to the Dark Energy problem. Our Hero could be assigned to calm down the conflicts and also help the scientists finding a solution, other stuff could happen along the way.

Wouldn't that be awesome?

A global warming Mass Effect? Never been too hot on the idea really. I guess you could do some interesting political stories, but imposing quotas on each faction seems to me a bit more balance sheety than a Mass Effect game should be.

In my opinion, not really. As you've said, BioWare have already covered the whole powers vs. non powers debate, so doing it again would only be redundant, especially if some of the same writers are involved. Then of course, we'd be getting all sorts of "This is how ME3 should have ended!" threads, which doesn't make me particularly excited. I say leave the specials vs. non specials to DA and the forthcoming Marvel movies, Mass Effect has plenty more interesting directions in which to go.

I want BioWare to start tackling some bigger issues. Though Biotic disputes would bring up some juicy subjects, I think it's a rather artificial basis for a conflict that'll probably end up in a lot of black and white territory. BioWare already have a universe fully primed to cover more ambiguous topics. Racism and reconstruction with the Geth and the Qarians, religious upheaval with the Asari, poverty with the remnants of humanity, militant politics with the Turians, and much more. Of course, many of these scenarios require a game set almost immediately after ME3, but I'd be completely willing to deal with a close proximity to the ending if it meant galactic cold war. That'd be pretty sweet.

Or BioWare could go a different direction entirely. Regardless, I want to see the story emerge more naturally from the universe. I don't want another cheesy heroic quest or blatantly divisive conflict. I just want people to be people, and mess everything up themselves.

I personally hope that we don't see the Dark Energy plot in future titles. The whole concept was absurd, the Reapers must stop the spread of Dark Energy, so they will leave a ton of tech that uses Dark Energy laying around the galaxy thus encouraging the species of the galaxy to use said tech and increase the amount of Dark Energy present in the universe.

If anything was deserving of the 'Yo dawg' meme it was that plot line (IMO).

I'm not talking about the Reapers here. I'm only talking about using the idea of Dark Energy disturbing the galaxy. As I described in the OP, we would have to find a solution on our own.

Personally, I would not want another galaxy-threatening event/enemy/problem that we will have to fix. I think Bioware needs to focus on smaller, more personal stories. I'd love to see a focus on a threat that is not galaxy-threatening in itself but has the potential to become one if you don't stop it. Like some scheme, plotting and background machinations that plan to take down the governments and establish a new regime. Like the creation of the clone army in SW prequels.

I wanna be a merc hired for a political assassination then betrayed by our PMC and the politician(because they need to catch someone and tie up loose ends) but we escape and are disowned by our PMC. We then find a old crappy ship and a rag tag crew and must build ourselves up until we are our own PMC and the final mission you take a contract to kill the pollitician who originally tried to get you killed. We would also get random contracts throughout the game afte we get our ship and our original crew.

I know the plot is a well used one but I think it could work in ME universe.

A dark energy plot would be fine with me.

Biotics vs. non-biotics though?  Not interested in this at all.  It's just templars vs. mages from DA:I.

You'd be splitting the player base of ME into cliques or groups that fundamentally oppose each other.  The flaming would be horrendous.  I'd rather the nME game be unifying and enjoying to play, rather than adversarial.  Sure, you could experience the story as a biotic, and as a non-biotic.  But history and my experience tells me that people will just divide into their own camps, and RP/backstory this huge conflict between biotics and non-biotics and it'll spill over into every thread, etc. etc.

I've thought of a few plots, a bunch of great settings, etc. but all in all, I'm just really interested and excited to see what the Bioware team comes up with.  I enjoy playing these games.  It's true, they inspire me, and ignite my imagination.. but I'm not a creator.  I'm a consumer.  And I fully intend on consuming this franchise.. provided I agree with the direction it's going.

I truly loved the first ME game.  To me, it's gaming perfection, even though it's not flawless, I feel it's perfect.  I just want to be a small cog in the ME universe, either an explorer or a soldier, hell, even a scientist.  I don't want the game to start off with the death of the universe and I'm the only one that can save it.  I don't want to be the only one who "knows what's really going on" while everyone goes about their daily life.  I want to be involved in characters' daily lives.  I want to feel immersed in this universe, not set out from it.  That's what I'm really hoping for.

This isn't exactly what the thread is about, but I'd see something like this as more the Reapers regulating Dark Energy spread, instead of either:

1)Shutting down all spread of it, therefore not allowing species to become spacefaring and potentially useful as future Reapers

2)Allowing it to fully spread (and all technologies related to it)

Basically, the Reapers could have very well seen themselves as a stabilizing force, of Order. Similar to how they seem to view themselves with the synthetic-organic conflict anyway.

Just in the Dark Energy story, they're running out of time now and have stretched out things long enough.

I don't have a problem with a Dark Energy thingamabob happening, but this has less to do with me caring for such an idea, and more to do with always wanting a sense of continuity (even if at times just a mainly lore continuity) between games.

-Dark Energy seems important

-Reapers/Collectors(?) and Quarians seem to be researching stars and dark energy

-Plus other hinting

-Therefore this has to mean something in some way in the future, even if it didn't in the immediate Reaper War

Would I want it as the core dilemma in the next game though? No. Not really.

But I'd be open to it being part of a more secondary plotline that can lead into something else in the 5th game.

But I don't want Biotics vs. Non-Biotics. While I'm very open to exploration of the nature of Biotics and added intrigue about it and the people who have it, I think I'd be sick of a full-on Biotics vs Non-Biotics conflict. Especially if it feels 'engineered' by a Dark Energy plotline.

If they use that stupid idea I'm definitely not getting it.   Just because it was alluded to in ME2 and 3, does not mean they should pick up the idea now and run with it.   Its bad enough that it was a blaring a stupid idea in 2 that never got used going forward.  The writers could have used that game time to actually have meaning and impact the story.  To do otherwise is unprofessional - a sign of unorganized mediocrity.  I believe it was the result of  leadership failures.

I hope that there are a great many changes done to the writing staff and its management as we transition toward ME: next.  Who knows, we might actually get a decent story for this game.

I think that ship has sailed.

A stupid or interesting idea I once had was if 'cancer' would've been a good theme for Mass Effect or really any other sci-fi future IP where humans and/or aliens colonize in space. Where cancer would come into context would be: Premise: "Cancer still can't be cured in the 22nd century" it's still somewhat of a genetic mystery and as it turns out we're like cancers of the galaxy by constantly expanding, causing destruction of nature and bloating up planets of the galaxy and - plot-twist! - our own biology is a universe and our cancer is actually intelligent civilizations expanding inside our bodies as cells.

Punchline: Our galaxy and our universe we live in is just part of another larger organic being.

Mass Effect: Colonization

Tagline: As cancer spreads, so do we.

Coming 2016

Lore contradiction count: 2187

Please DONT - I want a bit more "fiction" in MassEffect. This special idea of influencing dark energy by influencing ONE galaxy is so ridiculous. As far as I know in the actual astrophysic Dark Energy is somekind of a "placeholder" for an absolute unknown quantity which has to be in the equations that describe the accelerated expansion of the universe. There are billions of galaxies... why should Dark Energy be influenced by doing something in ONE galaxy? Beside that... in all articles I have read about it there are no further information about this quantity.

If they want something unknown in today physics they should take dark matter. And sometimes I have the feeling that some people - also some folks at bioware - think that dark energy and dark matter is the same (it is NOT in actual theories when I understood it right).

But if I look at all the magical technology stuff in the ME-universe that has absolutely NO reference in our reality... in my opinion they should take a very new magical technology to let further things happen and give us some "new stuff". Altough I think it would be the best to let grow the fundament they already created... and redefine some of the reaper stuff (especially the ME3-ending) to go further.

hell no I actually think that this Dark Energy idea is even worse than the synthetic vs organics bs that we got

its just a stupid idea people always say the ending would have been better with Drew Karpshyn ..I'm not so sure

I'd rather have a new story totally not connected to the ME3 endings at all.

While Dark Energy may not have been explored further in ME3, the concept was considered for it. It might not be a big problem for the average player, but fans will likely feel the looming reminder of what was and possibly what could have been. It's not exactly a fresh start.

This was always one of the biggest issues with the Dark Energy plot to me (along with Reapers creating technology that only makes the problem worse and faster lol). On the other hand, having a natural phenomenon as the 'villain' of new ME trilogy is very appealing concept to me, something completly different than Reapers and a great catalyst for potential conflicts among the races.

I don't see this as a huge problem. Anyone who still can't get over it isn't too likely to buy the new game anyway.

Not necessarily. Dark Energy might not ruin the plot for anyone (though as my first post suggests, it easily could), but there's a fair chance it'll leave a bad taste in people's mouths. Not enough to justify a boycott, but enough to curb some people's enthusiasm.

However, you're probably right. as long as it's framed correctly, Dark Energy wouldn't cause much of an uproar at all. I just don't think it's a very interesting concept.

I want a less heroic, but just as dramatic (or even more dramatic) plot for ME4. Something with conspiracy, assassinations, treason, and sexual scandals. I'd like to take a break from "saving the galaxy" type of storylines. I want to be a hero, not a god to the people of the Mass Effect universe.

I'd also like if it was secondary in ME:Next and then become a bigger issue in the 5th game.

But the Biotics vs Non-Biotics conflict wouldn't entirely be engineered by the Dark Energy plot. Biotics are already mistrusted by some people.

''Unfortunately, human biotics also face suspicion and persecution, beginning with the popular misconception that they can read and control minds. Biotics symbolize the dehumanization of mankind to people philosophically or religiously opposed to gene modification and cybernetics. Militaries are the only organizations that always welcome biotics, offering them huge recruitment incentives.''

''Some biotics have been known to abuse their abilities - using them to cheat at roulette, for example, or to pull people's chairs out from beneath them. There have been a few reports of individuals like these being attacked by frightened mobs, and sometimes even killed.''

I want a mix of all of these things... end up INCIDENTALLY saving the galaxy and SIMULTANEOUSLY screwing it up bit time, without a necessity of the story to call me a hero for anything. Ever.

I would love biotics vs. non-biotics.

As a side side story.

Like the contents of, for example, a Loyalty Mission or two in ME2, to give you the scale of how much I'd want it.

One biotics thing I really even resented not getting, was a significant mission that could involve Kaidan's biotics, his implant, and the origin of his biotics (cough cough Cerberus did it, sabotaged ships to spill eezo). I wanted him to do something like go nuts on a Cerberus guy and you could influence him to go for it and get more angry biotic closer to (though let's be honest, not even close to) Jack, or temper himself more, and have the ME1 hardening option slightly affect this.
