So say if Fromsoft does a Souls games that in fact not a crap sack world, it will be an instant 0/10?

Idk I don't think so. I just think their narratives of choice are bleaker. Still good/fun games though IMO.

^ HOW DARE YOU POST SOONER THAN ME?

Yes. Grief and hopelessness everywhere.

How dare you post AFTER me!

The gloominess, long bouts of isolation and inevitability of death seem to be hallmarks of Souls games because they tie into the gameplay which is centered around how best to survive more than anything.

I suspect if the world wasn't such a crap shoot, the atmosphere of the game wouldn't be as gripping and engaging. But I'm not an expert on DS so I'm sure someone like Dom can either back me up or destroy my thoughts in the matter.

Haha! That video reminded me..also Playing Shogun2. Hella fun game. Currently rocking the Chosokabe clan. Not really warring with anyone, but I have a massive trade Empire so Trade routes everywhere. Making a killing while everyone else is trading to fuel their wars. Meanwhile I'm, just building my invasion fleets. ships with armies placed all around the coast. Waiting and plotting when the time is right...massive invasion of Mainland Japan. Attacking from all sides.  I'll snatch up so much territory from the other clans it will take a least a few turns before they can get on the offensive against me. Good thing the A.I. isn't smart enough to see it coming.

Gonna play Good ol' commandos 2 and Galactic Civilization 3 soon too.

Can't play long games now. Games that I can do much in one hour? Yes.

If this is your criterion for choosing games, I would stay far the f*ck away from Grand Strategy games (like GalCiv 3). Stardock deserves your money but Grand Strategy is the worst genre if you only want to make small time investments unless you want your campaign to last several weeks or months.

They're timesinks. One of my favourite genres, but absolute timesinks.

I know. But I used to play like this:

Civilization V from turn 450-460...

10 turns quite enjoyable, then time to sleep.

GalCiv2 for 30 turns...

Occasionally I may play them 10 hours a day though!

.I must asked, is it a requirement that in these games the World must be a pile of crap story wise? No preventing it everything has already gone to crap?

Dark Souls 1&2 are pretty much already boned - Voxr covered the details well enough. Bloodborne is the only FS game that includes an ending that could *potentially* be seen as a good ending. The setting is slightly less bleak in DS2, though.

So say if Fromsoft does a Souls games that in fact not a crap sack world, it will be an instant 0/10?

They've considered doing "softer" games that don't involve as much hack n' slash n' die. :P

Lego Batman 3 was a step down, though, because they had large hub worlds instead of an open-world area, so I skipped it. Lego Jurassic World WILL have an open-world area.

I've played a little bit of Batman at a friend's house enough to get me to want to buy it. I'll probably just end up buying all three when I do tbh.

I finished part two of L:LoTR but I have haven't gotten very far in RoTK. I did get 100% stud collection in all the Ent levels though lol. Studs for days on Treebeard.

Currently shifting between Black Mesa and handheld console gaming. Played Persona Q for a bit more now and gotten a little further, while also contemplating on getting a bigger memory card for my Vita. I want more space for my games, particularly Sly 3 from the HD Collection, the Ratchet games and Metal Gear Solid 1 and Silent Hill -- The Vita needs some love and it's a small practical console with backwards compatibility to my favorite platformers so yeah!

*sigh* to be brutally honest I'm at that point where I finished a game (GTA V) and now I feel that empty void of "what do I play now?"

I'm trying to start a playthrough of either Witcher 2, 2nd DA:I playthrough, GTA V again, ME3 once more, or Dark Souls II... or I could buy Pillars of Eternity :(

Don't really consider it a game. But been playing Katawa Shoujo a visual novel the past few weeks. Hoping I can play The Witcher 3 today.. My girlfriend and I are finally getting settled in at our house.. so hopefully I'll have some time to set up my desktop/game room. My poor laptop would explode if I tried to boot TW3 up on it.

Got roughly 2/3 through Witcher 3, the hype is indeed real.

  • Best Quests I've seen quite a while. Outside of *some* of the Witcher Contracts, they're unique and sometimes play off of Classical Tales in twisted ways. This Quest alone has better storylining than the average RPG.

Am I missing the joke? The link sends you to a youtube video of the TV show "Family Matters". Is that the one with Urkel?

I got a new laptop and rediscovered Solitaire in the MS junk files. Freecell is one of the more challenging versions of Solitaire. In theory, you should with good planning, be able to win every game. I have a 90% score and a run of about 50 wins in a row. After a while, you lose interest, but I'm wondering if anyone else plays that game ( I don't use a Microsoft Accnt, (because they messed with my signons) and thus can't check the leaderboards).

3rd playtrhu of DAI. Kind of waiting for the next patch to deal with the 'suddenly immobile party member' bug that came with Patch 6 or 7.

Finally played the 2nd book of "Dreamfall Chapters".  Really enjoyed the 1st two games in the series I think because they evoked my nostagia for the optimism and hope of my youth -- that first time you have a flying dream (not that I'm bitter, just fond memories) Enjoyed the new game more for story line and lore development.  Hard to get used to the game-play conventions of adventure games after a  long abscence. Some secondary characters are cliched and clunky -- Red Thread like many game makers, could benefit from the approach Bioware takes to character writing.

Been splitting my time between DAI and TW3.  After I am done with them will probably head back into ME 1 and Skyrim.  Thinking of getting back into DAO as well.

I have a PC setup that runs BioShock Infinite at 90 FPS fully maxed out at 1440p and I am using it to play a 13 year old game in Gothic II, as well as two 2D Indie games in Darkest Dungeon and Serpent in the Staglands. Good lord almighty.

I wonder how many workers you oppressed so you can buy a PC like that based on their suffering and milking their deserved salaries!

Lol, good one.

Anyway, I disagree -- Ragnar's characters, particularly the female ones, have more charisma depth than the whole BioWare spectrum, where incidentally a lot of the characters are retreads of old one's. HK-47 > Shale, Carth>Alistair. Heck BioWare's character writing suffers more from samey cliche recurring patterns than that of the games you say does.

I was thinking of the National Front leader in Dreamfall Chapters, (as well as Likho and the cat-girl character). They all seem generic and cartoony. The National Front  seems to be a take on the Front Nationale (not sure of proper French spelling) which is a neo-fascist group that holds a fair bit of power in France. The leader of that group Marine le Pen, is a charismtic and relatively intelligent leader. The National Front leader in DC is presented as a bit of a goof. The Front National arguablly reflects racial resentment to and gained sway because of some fundamental and deep-rooted problems in French society --- the Banlieus and the French labor relations laws --  which reflect good intentions (social housing, protection of worker rights) but which have created a race based under-class in French society.  There has also been extremist Muslim violence in much of Europe. The National Front in DC, at least as of Book Two seems to be just cartoon rascist.  In my view good writing must reflect good social science, not just commonly held opinions.

In terms of the process, what Bioware does is assign individiual writters to each important character. The effect is like what you get in better made movies, where there is a collabarative effort between actors and director which help create more realistic characters.

Why would you use lol in the context of your little statement, all you are doing is making a broad assertion of opinion, supported by your opinion about one type of character.

Edit: If you want to understand the relationship between banlieaus and resurgent rascism in France, just look up the phrase (google will give you the proper spelling. I should rewrite the last unedited sentence above for clarity and less pretension, but I am lazy. Are you  angry because yourère jealous of my 90% win rate in Freecell. I should probably admit I cheat a bit in that I allow myself one set of undos or waybacks per game. If I hit a deadend I allow myself one chance to go back as far as I think will give me a winning chance. The game allows it so I tell myself it is technically not cheating.
