Catherine is an unconventional romantic horror. Avoiding the "Dating Simulator" stereotypes, they tackle romance from a very different angle than just talking your way into love over time.
The gameplay is Q-Bert's Worst Nightmare, spent climbing and pulling boxes in a nightmare-ish setting. To be honest, I initially hated it. The floor continually breaks apart, meaning you can't really take your time on solving them like most puzzle games. The good news on that side is that between stages, you can learn techniques from a few NPCs you'll be locking horns with along the rest of the game. It helps tremendously, and some you may discover on your own as well. Not sure the life system was necessary, but the spots between saves are comfortable enough that it doesn't become a problem.
Oh right, the story. I'll avoid spoilers for the moment, but they twist it in ways you won't expect, and some of the characters during the nightmare stages will clue you in to some of it before things take place. Right now I'm at the end of Stage 6, fighting something that would be appropriately seen in something like Bayonetta.
In short, it's a Dark Psychological game where you climb a tower full of supernatural foes covered in symbolism. That's Atlus for you. Not sure if it's on my favorites list, but I like it so far despite a bumpy beginning.
