MESSAGE POPULAIRE !

Okay. So, can someone please enlighten me here? I've been going over it and over it and I can't think of a plausible scenario of why or how Solas met up with Corypheus and gave him the orb anyhow? This is the best I can come up with.

Solas: Yaaawwwwn. What a good sleep. I'm sure happy to be awake. Wait a minute, elves are in terrible shape! Darn, if only my powers were at their most efficient, I could help them. *Looks at his orb.* Need to find somebody to unlock this sucker for me, so the elves can be all immortal and magical again. Maybe I should look up Mythal, see what she's up to nowadays...

Corypheus: *jumps into body of Darkspawn that is coincidentally near Solas* Raaaaarrr! I'm an ancient magister and super powerful!

Solas: Whoa! Hey buddy. Mind helping me out here? I've got this orb and I don't currently have enough power to use it to give elves their rightful place in the world.

Corypheus: Of course, my good man. Why wouldn't I?

Solas: *gives orb* Thanks man. You're really doing me a solid here.

Corypheus: Yess... a solid. That's what I'm doing. You don't by any chance know where the southern Divine is right now, do you?

Solas: Er, I just woke up but I think she may be in Haven. It's a good bet, anyway.

Corypheus: Thanks, bro.

Solas: No. Thank YOU, bro.

Seriously, someone please tell me a plausible scenario where Fen'Harel gives the orb to Corypheus. Please.

Your imagination outstrips my own in this scenario.

Honestly, I have no idea. I want to hear it from that pointy-eared bastard himself.

Corypheus is a Magister, so it's entirely possible they connected in the Fade somehow while Solas was still asleep. It's also possible that Solas sought Corypheus out in his desperation to unlock the orb. We know little of Corypheus' movements between Legacy and the Conclave, aside from the fact that he used Janeka/Larius at some point to get access to the Red Lyrium thaig. We know nothing of what Solas was doing immediately before the Conclave explosion, just that he was weak. There's a lot of ways they could have come together.

As for why he chose Corypheus- I think it was just a combination of desperation and arrogance- he didn't think Corypheus capable of actually using the orb, and he underestimates Corypheus' survivability, too. He though Cory would be a disposable ally- he could get his orb unlocked and then be on his way.

Solas wakes up , see the elves , blablabla , can't open his magical orb.

He's thinking maybe he should talk to Mythal , but it's been like what more than 1000 years ?He hasn't give her much news , so it would be rude to just ask her for something now.

Not a problem , he 's going to figure something out.

Corypheus is at his villain office , he wants to go back to the Golden City.He needs a lot of power to do it .He remembers something about "somnaborium" , some old elven magical orbs Tevinter used to have .

He calls the Venatori and ask them to look for one.

Solas gets the news (Let's say some spirits told him , they know stuff) and thinks "well there's some random Tevinter mages looking for an orb! They are probably good enough to unlock it !They'll get killed by the blast , I'll get my power back !Yeah!"

So he leaves his orb in a random ruin and send spirits to whispers in some venatori ears.

Blablabla ...BOOM.

Anyway , it's one of those thing you shouldn't think about too much. The plots says Solas gave his orb to Cory , whatever.

It's not entirely impossible that Solas gave Cory the orb before Tevinter Magisters entered the Golden City.

I mean before Cory became Darkspawn and was caught by Grey Wardens.

More than that I cannot say *tries her best to imitate Mother Giselle*.

But I brought drinks  ;)

He didn't think Cory would live past opening the orb. He thought Cory would blow himself up whilst opening it.

Pretty big mistake he made.

So far, this is the most plausible explanation I can think of. Still, not very, as I'm thinking that Corypheus is younger than Fen'Harel by quite a bit. Not sure if that's accurate, may just be what I've assumed, but that's the way it looks in my head.

Here's another scenario:

Solas: *unzips his sleeping bag* Oh man. What a good uthenera. I feel rested, relaxed, and ready. I'm gonna go to Arlathan, see what my buddies are--

Random guy: Arlathan? You mean that ancient elven place that got destroyed, along with their culture, ages ago? Also, why are you talking to yourself?

Solas: Whaaaaaa?

Random guy: Yeah. It's like you're describing what should be an inner monologue vocally, as if there are people outside this world looking in at you who can't hear it if you only think it. It's weird, bro.

Solas: No, the "Whaaaaaa?" was to the other thing.

Random guy: Oh. Arlathan. Yeah, that place is long dead, man. Sorry.

Solas: Looks like I need to bring back the glory of the elves. But no! My power is waning from my long sleep!

Random guy: ....

Corypheus: *takes over body of random guy because secretly he had the taint all along and was a grey warden recruit - this also neatly explains his grey warden allies when sacrificing the divine* Raaaaarrrr! I'm so incredibly powerful - I really wish I had one of those somnambulances or whatever they call it so I can become a god.

Solas: Dude, what a coincidence! I have one. Tell you what, you give elves their magic/glory back and you can enter the golden city all you want.

Corypheus: Deal!

....and scene!

Any chance maybe Cory was able to threaten him with unleashing the next blight by turning him into an archdemon? Then he would have chosen to give Cory the orb as the lesser of two evils.

I saw the situation as the Orb being like a magical jar of pickles. Solas is too weak and hungry to open it himself but have you seen Corypheus's hands?

Uhh, maybe... Corypheus in Larius or Janeka's body met Solas and they became acquaintances. Then Larius told Solas about a possible way to get the orb to unlock: there would need to be a blood sacrifice. Solas cares little for the loss of one life and so agrees, not knowing who Larius really is. They part ways, but make plans to reunite at a later date.
Larius gathers his grey warden allies for an important mission at the conclave, not telling them the real reason they're there (like Thom Rainier). Then mind controls the grey wardens once they're in the conclave, and forces them to hold the Divine against her will. Larius finally gets rid of his human form and takes back on his true form, Corypheus. He chose to use the Divine as a sacrifice because in a way she is viewed as a god, her word is law, everyone respects what she says etc, so he has to remove her and the hope she represents.
The explosion happens and Solas knows only his orb could've caused that, so he suspects Larius to be behind it, and goes to retrieve his orb but there is no trace of it. He sticks with the Inquisition in hopes of tracking down Larius to retrieve the orb. Later, in game, it seems Solas is just as surprised as everyone else when the identity of the Elder One is revealed, because he only knew Cory in his Larius form.

Something like that, I guess. I find it weird that Solas says he woke up from a slumber at the end of the game, but in convo with him, he says how he grew up in a mountain village or someplace? What a liar. Then I thought, what if he is like Flemythal, and only had a piece of Dread Wolf? But that wouldn't make sense either, because then he would've been at full power. But still, for an Elven "god" he is pretty weak, he shouldn't use uthenera as an excuse. If he is even a challenge if/when we fight him, it will only be because he stole Mythal's powers. He's a weakling himself.

Eh. He's an elf. They have a long, storied history of mistakes that bit them in the butt by constantly underestimating humans.

It's entirely likely that Solas manipulated Corypheus into taking the orb without ever meeting him; if taken to fight Corypheus at Haven and the endgame, neither one says anything to indicate they've ever met before. During In Hushed Whispers future Solas is treated as just another prisoner

He probably wanted to steal it back as soon as Corypheus unlocked it. It doesn't seem like Corypheus knew how to use it to begin with despite unlocking it. Solas isn't stupid.

Still it was a risk but it was a risk he was willing to take. Considering his history, Solas is not one for worrying about all potential consequences. Do what must be done.

This was always odd to me... considering who Solas is, one would think he'd have enough power to at least not end up in a jail cell guarded by some Venatori. I mean, not even superpowered Corphy himself, just some mook mages, and maybe demons.

That is a very good point. But why would he do it? Did he maybe just sense the power in what he thought was a non-ancientmagisterdarkspawn Grey Warden in Larius/Janeka? That would seem to make sense, I suppose. And how did he do it? On the other hand, it could very well have been a cover-up so the Inquisitor wouldn't find out his secret/real reason to be there (why he didn't say Corypheus was the Elder One). Which would lead one to believe he has more sinister goals than bringing back the elves. It seems to tie in well with Sandal's prophecy from DA2, assuming that the prophecy was about Fen'Harel and not Corypheus.

Also, I don't feel like scrolling up, but to the person who posted about Solas lying about where he was from - I always assumed he told the truth, just didn't tell you WHEN it happened.

Whatever the true meaning, I never saw this scene coming so just sat staring at the screen with my mouth hanging open while I watched it all unfold.  Now I'm torn between did the Dread Wolf take Mythal's power or did Mythal take over Solas' body.

To the question, I think Solas has a low impression of what human's are capable of so never expected Corypheus to be able to figure out the true potential of the orb.  But any explanation is a little weak because Solas gave Corypheus the orb so either expected Corypheus to unlock the orb for him or somehow keep it safe for him until he got stronger.  Either way, Solas was a fool and now I feel vindicated for keeping him on the sidelines during my first playthrough.  :)

Solas giving Corypheus the orb & Corypheus choosing to sacrifice the Divine are two major plot points that are not sufficiently explained & demand Herculean efforts at suspending disbelief.

I guess the idea being floated around right now is that... Solas needed Corypheus to unlock the orb, but believed that Corypheus would give it right back? (Or maybe he believed--and this one I can almost follow--that Corypheus would do whatever stupid things he wanted to do, but in typical Dread Wolf fashion Solas would repossess the orb via trickery, hopefully before the entire world had been destroyed.)

I guess if unlocking the orb required an incredibly powerful mage... willing to engage in blood sacrifice... and also with suicidal ambitions, the options would probably be pretty limited.

I like to think Corypheus appeared a little more harmless when Solas gave him the orb. Like when he tricked Bianca into giving him red lyrium location. I don't think Solas would give anything to a monster darkspawn with crystals growing out of it's skull.

I mean, Bianca doesn't seem stupid, as Larius/Janeka, Corypheus probably put on a good show of being super helpful and friendly to earn her trust. He could have done the same song and dance for Solas. This would explain why Solas hates the Grey Wardens, cos he made the mistake of trusting one once. WHOOPS.

I just went through In Your Heart Shall Burn on a replay and wondered the same thing. Why on earth did Solas think it a good idea to hand over his ancient, magical orb to someone who was clearly so batshit crazy? How did that ever sound like a good idea? I'd also like to know whether he understood how Corypheus would power the orb (the Divine's sacrifice).

I know Solas slept through the blights so possibly hadn't looked around enough to recognize someone who was tainted. Bianca was mentioned up ahead, so I'll counter. Why did she trust someone obviously tainted?  If he kept himself hooded, that didn't make her wonder? He could have used magic to alter his appearance, but that was never established. Without evidence to the contrary, we have to think these people saw him in all his gigantic, blighted glory.

And this was trustworthy?

Maybe Solas believed his connection to the orb would allow him to take it back anytime he wanted (and was proven wrong). Maybe he place a geas on Cory to ensure he got it back. Would like to know what went on there, but we'll probably never be told. I think there wasn't a reason, only plot contrivance to get us to the game.

I doubt he trusted him, I think he underestimated Cory and expected him to die powering up the orb or just be unable to actually use it.  That wouldn't be out of character for Solas.

I still have no idea why Cory had to kill the Divine to do his thing with orb though.
