If the inquisitor drinks from the well the ancient elven codex entries become readable. In one of them there is a mention about someone who has to be punished because he took the forbidden form and flew around in the shape of the divine. It's vague but implies that all the elven gods could transform into dragons and I guess other elven mages had the ability to shapeshift too but it was forbiddden to take dragon form because it was reserved for the gods. Also there are a lot of dragon statues in the temple and mythal statue has dragon wings.
That is an EXCELLENT point, Tinxa.
So here's a theory: The "Old Gods" were similar to the Elven Gods in that they were extremely powerful beings with "god-like" powers, etc. Perhaps they were who the Elven Gods worshipped before they got said powers? It's not far-fetched to think of dragons as intelligent creatures. They didn't even necessarily have to be evil. Not saying they were benevolent, but not many people worship evil. Even the ancient Tevinter magisters.
I see two possible tie-ins here: One, the Maker. Who was he/did he even exist/did he exist but not in the way the Andrastians think he did. (I'm going with that last one.)
Two: Dragons. The dragons of the dragon age are feral creatures without any sentience, let alone god-like powers. Are they ancestors of the Old Gods/whatever? And if they are, what happened to them to make them become thus?
And while we're on the subject of dragons, lets talk Kossith. THE Iron Bull tells you no one really knows why the Qunari left the Kossith. The general consensus among fans seems to be that the Qunari (as a race) were created by the Kossith as a sort of super-soldier, and the Kossith were generally humanoid and created the Qunari by some crazy magic involving dragon blood. Which makes sense, I suppose. Here's where I'm going to theorize a deviation, though: THEEEEE iron bull tells you about his strong connection to dragons, he gets sexually turned on by killing them, etc. (Which is awesome.) What if the Kossith were dragons and maybe put in like, a drop of their blood to the baseline of Qunari, which was (for lack of any real ideas about it as this is a vague area) human. So, if we presuppose that the Kossith are dragons and made the Qunari, it's not a big jump to say that the Old Gods were extremely powerful Kossith, the way Fen'Harel and company were extremely powerful elves.
Couple points about that:
Could "The Maker" and Andraste have just been extremely powerful humans, then (as Dorian says the Tevinters already believe about Andraste - even a broken clock is right twice a day, and they are an incredibly old and wise race), meaning that all "gods" in this universe are not "creators" but beings with god-like powers?
The Kossith: Perhaps they invented the Qun for themselves and the Qunari use it for a similar purpose. Without it, it is very hard to go against their savage, violent nature. This would make sense with dragons of Thedas - they're savage, feral beings. Perhaps they devolved into that after so long without the Kossith version of the Qun? The Qun (or their original version of it) is what keeps the Kossith from constantly warring with each other/everyone else. Without it, with their incredible power, they could end the world entirely. Is that why, as Tinxa so helpfully pointed out, the elves had statues of dragons? Why Flemeth can turn into one? Beings that powerful could even have originally given the elves their magic.
Okay, I know a lot of this sounds far-fetched, but it's at least logically sound. Anyone think differently? Or the same, for that matter?

Corypheus: I agree, bro. You're a genius. Why'd I use Samson and Calpernia? I shoulda recruited you.
Richie: Thanks, buddy. I appreciate the sentiment, but you're part of a fictional universe.
Corypheus: mmmwhaaaaa?
