Is it set in stone that he gave it to Corypheus? I mean, he was asleep.

For your own benefit, please imagine Corypheus in full evil monster magister form, acting out the prison-holding-cell-key-fetch-scene from "Hot Shots 2".

Solas: No. Thank YOU, bro.

That is where I cracked up.

Also, I have a hard time thinking the elven gods (their nobility, basically) were the same Old Gods the Tevinter worshipped, since those gods were dragons. Buuuut, on the other hand, Flemythal CAN become a dragon as we see in DA:O and DA2, and if you keep it right and Morrigan drinks from the fountain, Morrigan becomes a dragon at the end of Inquisition, so it is entirely possible.

If the inquisitor drinks from the well the ancient elven codex entries become readable. In one of them there is a mention about someone who has to be punished because he took the forbidden form and flew around in the shape of the divine. It's vague but implies that all the elven gods could transform into dragons and I guess other elven mages had the ability to shapeshift too but it was forbiddden to take dragon form because it was reserved for the gods. Also there are a lot of dragon statues in the temple and mythal statue has dragon wings.

That is an EXCELLENT point, Tinxa.

So here's a theory: The "Old Gods" were similar to the Elven Gods in that they were extremely powerful beings with "god-like" powers, etc. Perhaps they were who the Elven Gods worshipped before they got said powers? It's not far-fetched to think of dragons as intelligent creatures. They didn't even necessarily have to be evil. Not saying they were benevolent, but not many people worship evil. Even the ancient Tevinter magisters.

I see two possible tie-ins here: One, the Maker. Who was he/did he even exist/did he exist but not in the way the Andrastians think he did. (I'm going with that last one.)

Two: Dragons. The dragons of the dragon age are feral creatures without any sentience, let alone god-like powers. Are they ancestors of the Old Gods/whatever? And if they are, what happened to them to make them become thus?

And while we're on the subject of dragons, lets talk Kossith. THE Iron Bull tells you no one really knows why the Qunari left the Kossith. The general consensus among fans seems to be that the Qunari (as a race) were created by the Kossith as a sort of super-soldier, and the Kossith were generally humanoid and created the Qunari by some crazy magic involving dragon blood. Which makes sense, I suppose. Here's where I'm going to theorize a deviation, though: THEEEEE iron bull tells you about his strong connection to dragons, he gets sexually turned on by killing them, etc. (Which is awesome.) What if the Kossith were dragons and maybe put in like, a drop of their blood to the baseline of Qunari, which was (for lack of any real ideas about it as this is a vague area) human. So, if we presuppose that the Kossith are dragons and made the Qunari, it's not a big jump to say that the Old Gods were extremely powerful Kossith, the way Fen'Harel and company were extremely powerful elves.

Couple points about that:

Could "The Maker" and Andraste have just been extremely powerful humans, then (as Dorian says the Tevinters already believe about Andraste - even a broken clock is right twice a day, and they are an incredibly old and wise race), meaning that all "gods" in this universe are not "creators" but beings with god-like powers?

The Kossith: Perhaps they invented the Qun for themselves and the Qunari use it for a similar purpose. Without it, it is very hard to go against their savage, violent nature. This would make sense with dragons of Thedas - they're savage, feral beings. Perhaps they devolved into that after so long without the Kossith version of the Qun? The Qun (or their original version of it) is what keeps the Kossith from constantly warring with each other/everyone else. Without it, with their incredible power, they could end the world entirely. Is that why, as Tinxa so helpfully pointed out, the elves had statues of dragons? Why Flemeth can turn into one? Beings that powerful could even have originally given the elves their magic.

Okay, I know a lot of this sounds far-fetched, but it's at least logically sound. Anyone think differently? Or the same, for that matter?

================================================================================================================================

Corypheus: I agree, bro. You're a genius. Why'd I use Samson and Calpernia? I shoulda recruited you.

Richie: Thanks, buddy. I appreciate the sentiment, but you're part of a fictional universe.

Corypheus: mmmwhaaaaa?

Solas and Mythal convo at the end, it's stated that he gave it to him, but "gave" can mean any number of things.

Well, my pet theory is this: Solas is the Maker  :P

The elven gods and the old gods are one and the same. Elven gods were some sort of fade beings of immense power (possessed elves maybe). They could change shapes, their favorite and most awe inspiring form being dragons. But they became vain and egotistical, constantly warring with each other for worshippers. Once they went too far and murdered Mythal - one of their own. This angered Solas who decided he has to lock them up before they destroy everything. He somehow locks them in dragon form and beneath the earth. Convinced the elves will now thrive he goes to sleep. But DAI isn't the first time he woke up. He wakes up and finds Tevinter ruling over everything and elves enslaved (the locked elven god dragons getting revenge in the meantime by sending dreams to Tevinters). Much like he stumbled upon the Inquisitor, he stumbles upon Andraste and because he's the only god left, he convinces her of his godhood and she knows him as "the Maker". He manipulates Andraste into starting a rebellion, she promises to free elves and give them land so all is good and he goes to sleep again. He wakes up in DAI and finds out the world has gone to hell again and elves live in poverty. He resolves to fix things once and for all. Because his previous meddling didn't work, this time he has a more drastic plan involving the orb.

Probably not true but I like it ;)

If I recall, I read a theory somewhere that Solas was hoping Cory would die while unlocking the orb and then Solas would have killed two birds with one stone.

I don't think he thought Corypheus could unlock the orb at all, actually.  "I never would have believed a Tevinter mage could unlock such a powerful relic."

This needs to actually be explained at some point I think. Not left up to us for speculation. It feels like really sloppy storytelling.

It's one of those small details that not everyone pays attention to. So while it may bother the more inclined followers of the story that analyzed every faucet of the plot, most people are all stuck on: WHAT! SOLAS BE DREAD WOLF! OMGZ!

Because exterminating the elves was definitely going to help him save the elves.

Anyway , it's one of those thing you shouldn't think about too much. The plots says Solas gave his orb to Cory , whatever.

Why a Qunari can lead a highly religious paramilitary organization is "one of those things you shouldn't think about too much."

But not the question that serve as basically the reasoning behind the entire plot moving.

Besides, Dragon Age Inquisition already has too many lenience from its fans regarding all those "you shouldn't think about too much" treatment.

I never said I thought it was a smart strategy x) Just quoted a thing he said that might explain his thoughts on the subject. Something along the lines of, a few sacrifices for the bigger picture? But I agree with other people, he probably never expected Corypheus to be able to use the orb, or even survive it's activation.

Hmm, I'm a little lost here now. How did Solas get mixed with the Inquisition again? Okay, beginning of the game: the explosion happens, then the interrogation with Cass happens days after the explosion because it's stated that you were unconscious for days, with Solas taking care of you. So, how again did Solas come to be with the Inquisition? Was here there before the explosion, or just conveniently happened to show up just in time to take care of you? I'm just wondering because someone up above quoted something Solas said "I never would have believed a Tevinter mage could unlock such a powerful relic." Now it really makes no sense why Solas would give Corypheus the orb. If he didn't think he could unlock it, why give it to him? But let's say he did give it to him, was he expecting the blast at the conclave and that's why he was in the area? I don't clearly remember Solas' reasons for joining the Inquisition, but I believe he might've said something like he wanted to help his fellow mages...

Someone help me out here.

We can't rule out the possibility that Solas is just an idiot. Seriously, the only decision he makes that doesn't turn out to be a complete train wreck for everyone involved is aiding the Inquisition. Sure, he might be intelligent and skilled, but he lacks any ability whatsoever to make good choices.

A flaw that I expect will bite Thedas in the posterior before long.

His codex entry states that witnesses saw him in a nearby village at the time of the blast. And then he shows up at the inquisition camp, surrendering his staff to the chantry without protest. Telling them he's an apostate that knows a lot about the fade, claiming that he wants to help with the breach.

I don't think the Divine was a random choice, nor simply a choice for dramatic effect.  We spend the entire game gathering Power and Influence.  Who would have possessed the most in Southern Thedas at the time?  Her Most Holy.  It would have been far easier to grab some random attendee who would not be missed from the Conclave to perform the blood magic rite, otherwise.

I think Solas and Bianca are the same person.  Both try to make up for their  "D'oh!" move by semi-coming clean about things and helping the Inquisition.  Solas's "D'oh!" was clearly the bigger one though.  My guess is that Solas was making his way to the Temple of Sacred Ashes to try to correct his mistake of giving the orb to Cory but didn't make it in time.  Then when the business hit the fan, he joined the Inquisition.
