Why do men like bull sessions? Back in college I thought they did because that was the way they arrived at a consensus, which they could then spread. But that doesn't happen. Typically any consensus reached is only temporary and when the participants wake up their views have reset to what they held before.

So what's the point?

A bull session is when people, typically men, discuss issues of no direct import (the meaning of life, why army uniforms are green, women etc)

I also take issue with this really being unique to men to be honest, women do it as well, just don't call it a bull session.  I suspect it is tupperware parties but can't really prove it.  I mean tupperware parties?

Not always, I can discuss the little useless things too! Like why do they call it ketchup? Why does that man wear a toupee when you can clearly see it's fake and etc. etc.

I forgot what I bull session was for a bit.

For men it seems like it is more done to decide who has the strongest and clearest and confident opinion on something, and follow him/them. More of a(n agreed upon) verbal conflict or consensus. It isn't the topic or information that is especially important, but just what you stand for and how you stand for it. 'Bull'

For women it seems like it is more done to decide what's the fastest and most interesting opinion that can be spread. Gossiping, or at least news spreading.

But there really isn't much of a difference, and dividing such a thing by gender makes me feel icky, as both genders do both things quite often. Nor do we consider them specific sessions anymore, anyway. Its just 'talking' now.

Men aren't looking for dominance so much anymore, and women aren't looking to spread information for the sake of spreading it anymore. Its still done, oh sure, men and women do look for their 'man time' and 'woman time', but it seems to continuously be weakened as something important. I think more and more, people just hang out and chat, for the sake of the information itself + feeling like you've socialized at all (not 'how' you're socializing).
