So, what is Adaar?

Trevelyan is a noble family, Cadash comes from House Cadash and Lavellan is a Dalish clan. But Adaar? Why would Vashoth have a surname?  Did their parents choose one when they left the Qun? Maybe a nickname or something?

Is there information on this that I missed?

Your guess is as good as mine. Perhaps it was their fathers name and it's passed down like that.

I don't remember exactly as I've only played through as a Qunari once, but I remember Bull telling me that it was a good name to pick. This leads me to believe that Adaar's parents probably chose it when they broke from the Qunari though like I said it's been awhile.

Adaar means "Weapon" in Qunari.  You can discover this by talking to Iron Bull at the tavern, he makes mention of your name and what it means.  He thinks it's funny actually.

From what I gathered with conversations with Bull the Qunari don't really name each other, they generally use nicknames instead, or sometimes numbers.  Their society seems to be structured more along the notion that you are what you do, rather than an individual.

The parents fancied having a family name.

*shrug*

The real reason probably being that they needed a family name for wherever they use the last names of all the other races.

That's what I'd guess as well - if there's no concept of family in the Qun (family by blood, anyway), then they wouldn't have a surname when they leave the Qun. But the society they'd be entering would be using it, so they adopt a term to serve that purpose for themselves.

Adaar is a ship mounted cannon. Likely, the parents chose it simply because they felt like they needed a surname in the new society they were living in.

Wow, name fits pretty well if you play as a mage.

Yes, hence my Qunari Inferno mage - Adaar Adaar, as to what name his parents gave him before he came into his magic and burned the barn to the ground, I haven't decided yet. :)

Under the Qun, Qunari have no normal names, only a "series of numbers" or titles. Adaar may have been the name the Qunquisitor's parents took on as a surname. It refers to a ship cannon, if I remember correctly; IB tells you about it eventually when speaking with him about Qunari.

I like that the history of the character is defined but vague enough for the player to develop their own unique history.

Ha, thanks. Looks like indeed I missed something.

That's a nice meaning and yes, it seems especially great for a fire mage. Or a tempest maybe. Good to know.

What's kinda interesting is the default first names for Adaar mean "Time" and "Navigator", which makes me kind of wonder whether the Qunquisitor's parents may have been sailors at some point in their lives? Timekeeping and navigation are important on a ship and that Adaar in Qunlat is another name for a cannon, does seem to suggest a somewhat nautical theme?

That really adds a lot! Since Qun titles reflect the roles assigned to them by Tamassrans it's highly likely their roles were indeed related to sailing.

Adaar would be a pretty appropriate title for a cannoneer working on a Qunari dreadnought. I could imagine that after the Qunquisitor's parents (or even grandparents) decided to leave the Qun and had kids, they decided to use Adaar as the family surname?

(Of course, I could be vastly overthinking this)

Overthinking or not, I like this a lot. I shall adopt it as headcanon.

Here's an idea. Perhaps Adaar's mother and/or father were gunners on a Qunari Dreadnought. Then they either deserted because they didn't want to be part of the Qun anymore or their dreadnought was overturned during a battle or storm with the pair being left for dead and choosing to start fresh.

However they left the Qun, they took new names for themselves, but kept Adaar as their surname so that they and their daughter/son wouldn't forget their origins or heritage. It's even possible that Adaar was a Qunari title for a Dreadnought gunner or dreadnought officer.

That's the beauty of it; there's enough room for us to build our own history for our character in spite of certain elements being firmly established, so one can say you're definitely not overthinking it. You're sculpting your character's origin and who you want your character to be, pun unintended.

Likely. I mean, occupational surnames aren't uncommon in the real world either, like Smith.
