Why can't we have a romance option like Isabella for straight male gamers?

Okay, I'm going to get this back on topic some.  I found another quote from DG that sums up some of my feelings here.  I can't quote directly, because it's from an old locked thread:

I think it's fine for someone to suggest that they find Cassandra unattractive, or that they find any character unattractive.

The problem, as I see it, is that many of those who make such comments don't stop there. The implication of their statements often progresses to the point that the only purpose a female character could have in the game is to be attractive--it's not even "I wouldn't want to romance her if she's romanceable" but rather "I don't want her present at all because she's unattractive".

In other words, critique regarding the art is great. I'm sure the artists appreciate it, even when it's negative. Critique regarding the attractiveness is also fine, but if it comes with an assumption that we only put characters in the game to be pretty... well, then you're wrong. I'm afraid a statement of "she's not attractive enough for me" will be met with a resounding shrug and a "sorry for your loss".

Cassandra is unattractive all the way. By that I mean she is visually unattractive and her character is unattractive.

Why is she visually unattractive ? Short hair, that jaw, scars...the lot. Don't give me the "female warriors are supposed to look like that !" argument. They do not. Do female wrestlers like Gina Carano look like Cassandra ? No. Do female warriors like Aela or Mjoll or Frea or even Ves look like that ? You know, Ves still looks very attractive despite her short hair. Or perhaps we should look at comic book female warriors. Do the Valkyries or the Amazons look like she does ? Nope, they look far better. At least they could have made her muscular if they wanted to give off the whole hardened warrior feel but she looks just like every other female in the game. There is little to no coherence when it comes to Cassandra's looks. That and her only saving grace is her liking sex stories ? Give me a break. I know many women who like smutty literature and smutty entertainment. This might be new and interesting among women in say, 1950s but its 2015 now.

Why is her character unattractive ? Because it is almost exactly like how Leliana behaved in Origins. Everything is Maker this, Maker that, it's the Maker's will, Maker's plan...ugh. Bioware has always given us two straight male love interest with different outlook on things. We got two Andrastians in this game. In DAO we got one Andrastian and one Non-religious whereas in DA2 we got one Non-religious and one Dalish. Josephine might be a Disney Princess romance but at least she has sufficient intelligence capacity to not be hung up on the Maker and the Chantry all the time. The most she says about the Chantry is that it is familiar across kingdoms, a source of shared faith, good for negotiations and what have you which makes sense.

Opinions are awesome.  Thanks for sharing yours, but it's just an opinion that myself and several others disagree with.

Sorry you're not attracted to her.  I wouldn't ask you to be.  I'm not attracted to Cullen (pretty boy, meh,) but I wouldn't spend any time talking about it.  Certainly not in every LI related thread.  He's not for me, moving on.   It's pretty easy to do.

I agree that there should be more variety among the lady LIs and that was mentioned by me as well as by others in the previous pages.  However, it doesn't change what David Gaider said.   They don't feel like they should have to make their women any certain way because a few might dislike it.  More importantly, I think you should take his words as how the writing team feels as a whole.  I'm betting Mike Laidlaw (DG's boss and creative director for the DA series) feels the same way.

Not every woman in our party for the DA games is going to look/act like Cassandra, just like not every woman looks/acts like Miranda (as an example, not saying that is who/what you want.)  If you would prefer someone like Miranda or Leliana, you can express a desire for such without insisting that an opinion you have that some share is fact.

Outside of a private group, I don't believe that I've ever overtly shared my opinion of which characters I found attractive, or not (and certainly never as a reflection of a video game's quality.) The reason is simple - I assume that no one cares. And, whether they care or not, I think it's dumb and egotistical to share one's attractions in a video game forum as though they are relevant or meaningful to others in any way.

I've played through the romance storylines of characters who I wouldn't date in real life, whether because of my own sexuality, or because they just aren't my type. I don't see it as having anything to do with my romantic desires, or anyone else's. Why? Because it's a video game. I'm supposed to play it, not have sex with it.

Ah yes, the fundamental problem with Creators: they are really jealous SOBs who will not stand for people using the free will they got from him/her. And they must be worshipped, oh yes. Cause beings with the power to create entire worlds really dig hard on the worship and care very much for what those puny, insiginificant little beings they created think.

Puh-lease. What a joke.

And those communication tactics... Instead of just telling everybody what's what, they choose one person to deliver the message.

Puh-lease.

So you would be perfectly okay with your children rejecting you and looking to other adults to be their parents?

But whatever, the Maker let it slide. He just imprisoned the false gods underground. Then what? Man still reached out to them and from that corrupted the Golden City. The Maker cursed the offenders. Still, he decided to turn back to the world when he heard Andraste singing.

The Maker's power was made obvious to all who followed Andraste. It was his power that crushed Tevinter.

They're lucky the Maker didn't kill them all for what they did to Andraste.

So yeah, not seeing why people dislike the Maker.

I don't find her attractive, she is ill behaved, not to mention her promiscuity. A harlot, nothing more.

Straight Merrill's clones would be great!

Ugh, let me say it in a weird way:

Basically, I want Richard Dawkins as companion.

Wonderful idea but I guess Dawkins would be killed rahter quickly in Thedas. Too much Andrastian Assassins now powered by Leliana (not saying she has a problem with atheists). Anders and Morrigan were kind of critics to the chantry, Morrigan specially and she fullfills this role for me.

Hey, I have likes again.

I'm with Jeremy insofar as I don't see the romances as exclusively designed to cater to personal fantasies. I see them as a way to witness the nature of the characters in different ways. I'll roll a male and have him romance Cassandra for the same reason I'll roll a warrior and pursue the Templar path. It's a character independent of my own impulses and interests.

Of course, the difference is that Jeremy has suggested we'd be better off without the romances to cut down on the complaining about them, and I really don't want to lose that potential aspect of the story.

She was quite the tank in my game, the unsung hero of Skyrim :P

There's also that one chick from the Dragonborn DLC who apparently has rivalry dialogue with Lydia lol

I loved how a lot of the followers became a little extra life like in Dragonborn. It was a treat hearing Illia say, "not again," the second time I went into one of those book/portals.

I am completely unaware of this rivalry. Who is this lady?

Just wanted to clarify a couple things:

1) Both Isabela and Cassandra are hot; physically and personality-wise

2) New Shimmer is both a floor wax and a dessert topping
