He has stated in one of many "Josie and Cass look like men - the remix" threads, that personality means nothing and physical attraction is absolute. 
Which, imo, makes this even more ridiculous...
I'm in the "all of the above" camp, if anything.

I've always thought that was a headband. Her hair would still look fabulous without the weird braid thing. From the first moment I saw it I thought it was an odd choice (from the devs). The braid doesn't seem to be attached to her other hair, unlike say, Josie's updo.
Also, I don't think enough time has passed between the end of DA2 -- the three year gap after Hawke walks away when Cassandra interrogates Varric -- for her to grow hair long enough to be braided in such a way. If you are suggesting that it's some sort of circular cornrow type of thing (I have no other way to describe this), then that idea seems silly. Doing that would require hair maintenance, especially for her hair type, that I rather doubt Cassandra has the time or inclination to do.

Probably subjective again but their personalities aren't what i'd call amazing either, they are pretty droll and flat to me, again more so Cass.

Personally... Cass and Josie do nothing for me, in the whole "sexual attraction" department.
Not because they "look like men" they don't... and are attractive in their own right, however, their personalities just don't really "do it" for me... not necessarily because I think they're droll or flat, they're just not my type at all. I got nothing against their character, though.
Now, Sera on the other hand...

Even a rat tail doesn't make sense given it's position and the timeframe since DA 2's epilogue. Is it a really tacky headband? That makes me think of Princess Vespa's headphones in Spaceballs.....

I think it's just a really long braid that wraps around and gets pinned to where it starts, but the hair modeling (like..all BioWare hair) is just wonky that it doesn't show it well. I like it so I ignore how it does or does not work.
