Replaying trylogy again, noticed this - ME1 have have a very disnitct visual style, it's as if it was Sci Fi movie from mid 80s, film grain is on it's place. It's funny i never noticed that before.

And with that i finally realized what was bugging me all this time with visual style of ME2-3 - they completely lost that retro-futuristic feel. All new content look like generic modern Sci Fi.

First concept arts from New Mass Effect indicate that it's going to be worse - next game will look like just if it's another Halo installation, or Star Citizen, or another generic Sci Fi of these days and so on.

I agree, regarding the visual style in ME1.  I really missed it in the sequels, but I'm not prepared to go so far as to say that it's removal has decreased the series to "generic sci-fi".

But the grain did make it seem.. gritty and real.  It maybe walls even appear to have some sort of depth.. I found it made the universe feel more real.  As for the reasons why they removed it, that would be cool to know.  I wonder if it's similar to the removal of the holstering animation (which, again, I felt added more immersion and made events seem more dynamic).

I personally liked ME3 visual style the best.

But each for their own. :)

Eh I always turn off the film grain effect anyway.  Prefer a clear picture.  As far as visual styles go I find that the styles in all three games are pretty similar.  When I am walking around a building, space station, or ship in the ME universe it definitely has an ME feel to it.

I enjoyed the style of ME1 quite a bit.  I turn off the film grain and turn everything else up to max when I play it.  I love the amount of choices we had in armor styles for the whole crew.  I think that all of those armor choices increased the immersiveness of the game and showed off that "Mass Effect" style.

I also liked the music of ME1.  Coupled with that visual style and the huge openness of the citadel made it quite the experience.

Well EA bought Bioware and said - "No there will be no interesting visual style, Your game must look like everything else and guns will have ammo because ..reasons also your female characters will have huge T&A and buff up all the males".

I much prefer ME2 and ME3 style. Only the door lock icons are worth it. Film grain is there to smoothen the edges with the absence of anti-aliasing. If you add it manually via Nvidia control panel the grain only gets in the way. The picture is much clearer and prettier without it. And ME2 also has Film Grain option.

Environments are much more interesting in ME2 and ME3.

Not sure if you're referring to the presentation of the game (film grain etc.) or if you're referring to the character aesthetic and the design of their attire. I enjoyed the option to turn the grain on or off. Also prefer ME1's aesthetic over the sexualized sequels. Either way, I agree. Hopefully Bioware harkens back to the original vision of Mass Effect.

Well I don't know how much this has to do with artistic style, but I liked how people would actually wear a space suit in ME 1.

ME 1: Going to a planet with a toxic atmosphere, or extreme temperatures? Equip an armored suit with high shield capacity.

ME 2 - 3: Going to a planet with a toxic atmosphere, or extreme temperatures? Eh, this breather mask and exposed skin is just fine.

Unprepared people can easily take this art for another Halo concept.

I can appreciate both styles, but I do have to admit that I sometimes miss ME1's style. Especially when it comes to the soundtrack actually.

I felt ME1 had no style at all. It mostly white walls with no sort of identity put into them.

ME2 was a major evolution in that aspect, and I hope NME, being on a new engine, doesn't suffer that same problem. But considering DAI did very well, I'm hopeful.

I loved ME1's style, it felt like one of those old SF movies or the ols Star Trek series.

The more generic soldiers-in-space-style of ME3 is nice as well and probably fits the Reaper war better, but if ME4's setting is more like ME1 again I hope they bring back the retro-SF-style, too.

Could we have some more comparative screenshots? I don't see any particular change from one game to the next when doing an apples-to-apples comparison. The Citadel always looks like the Citadel to me, for instance.

ME1 is the only one I play with filmgrain on. Not sure whether it's from the lower graphics quality of the engine, or if the grain filter is somehow different, but it really looks awesome in ME1, but just doesn't mesh with ME2 or ME3.

I never used film grain, didn't like it. However, I agree, ME1 had this distinct style taking cue from the 70's and 80's sci-fi style which I really like. It's a bummer that it slowly devolved into generic sci-fi with each iteration.

It reminds me of Cerberus. I hope that isn't the armor we'll be wearing.

I think ME1 had the best visual style too. ME2 was very moody and stylish and ME3 had good graphics but I think ME1 hands down had the best art direction because of the retro futurism style.

Yeah that is what I am saying, I don't see a huge difference.  I mean what are people talking about exactly?  Building interiors?  Character designs?  Armor designs?  If anything I just notice more variety and detail in the newer games (evolution of armor Shepard can wear).   The old stuff is still in there.

It looks very busy with many lines and layers. The science fiction equivalent of adding seventeen belts and straps to a medieval fantasy outfit.

I like the visor. It can retract or become transparent during cutscenes to show player's face. I also quite enjoy the leather-like material. Makes the armor look more comfy. I'm not a fan of extra bulkiness though. Didn't like it in ME1 either.

I agree I thought ME1 visual style was pretty bland
but lately there seems to be a lot of fascination with ME1
c'mon people it wasn't that great
nostalgia is a powerful thing I guess

Its not Nostalgia.  Play ME1 again.  Yes its dated, and the controls feel a little clunky - but that was a hell of a game with an amazing story.

I agree.

This armor looks like a lot of stuff was just thrown on. Having a space suit with tons of belts and pouches doesn't necessarily make it look futuristic, or even practical.
