Hello all,

I've searched around for an answer to this but can't seem to find the answer for this particular combo.

Basically I've softlocked the Blackwall romance - flirted on the ramparts and then accepted (but not started) his companion mission. I have high approval with Bull but no more flirting options since Haven.

If I complete Blackwall's mission will I lock out Bull? Or should I dump him now and hope for the best with IB? I don't want Bull to date Dorian while I'm faffing around with Blackwall.

Does anyone know the point of no return?

I'm a bit paranoid because at the end of DA2 I had the romance bug so the game flagged me as having no LI and it ended forever alone.  <_<

Thanks!

The ramparts is the point of no return for that romance or so I was told. You are now locked in with him.

You can still break up with Blackwall. There are a few chances. Before the mission (which I think you're talking about ) you can break up with him in the barn. If you do the mission, you can break up with him in your room. I think you can do both of those and still date others -- I know I did for Cullen & Sera. I don't know for Bull, though, since I haven't done his romance. I think most romances can still be initiated if you haven't gone forward with the main quests (wicked hearts, adamant), but I'm not sure!

Also to avoid The Iron Bull and Dorian dating, just make sure not to have both in the party at the same time. It only occurs after banter between them are triggered.

OK so I suppose I should go down the barn and put him out of his misery (well, not really, it's Blackwall). I really wanted to see how far I could go before doing that. And thank you for the note on the main quests! I haven't started either.

Ahh, great news, they both have the same purpose as damage providers so that won't happen.

Thanks a lot!

I just tested the barn break-up with Blackwall, and once you break up with him my flirt for Iron Bull came back. When I was soft-locked in, the flirt was gone.

Probably if you broke up with Blackwall in the bedroom, the flirt would come back too. But if you don't break up with Blackwall at the bedroom, you're pretty much locked in until Blackwall's judgement, and that puts it too late for most other companions.  Cullen might still be possible at that point, but I know Sera and Bull aren't.

Thanks for testing it :) My saves are all before the bedroom scene. I'm probably going to end up running around doing everything else to avoid doing any dumping.

Right now it's just a dilemma about whether I really want to break up with the Beard just to ride the Bull. Choices choices...

I decided to do a little further testing (oh, twist my arm and make me replay the Blackwall romance <3 <3 I love that Batman bedroom scene), and you can do his quest and get the bedroom scene and the first kiss there, and then break up with him. You actually get approval from Blackwall by breaking up with him at that point. After the breakup, I ran down and the flirt for Iron Bull is back.

This is all pre-Wicked Hearts & Adamant, so if you do one of those it might change!

What I really wanna know is whether IB and Dorian get special banter if my Inquisie shacks up with Bull, find out that bull riding isn't really his bag and then goes with Dorian. I heard a rumour Sera and Bull get special banter if you go with Bull but wind up with Sera so they exist. Maybe.

You are fine with Blackwall until you do his quest on the storm coast and the follow up talk at which point you can break off or commit. If you commit then you are essentially locked in his romance until much later on, so if you want to continue with Bull, just DO NOT commit in that talk.

I'm so frustrated right now! My Female Elf was flirting with both Blackwall & Iron Bull since the beginning... I had it in mind that she was ultimately going for Iron Bull because I'd already finished Blackwall's romance (and recently, at that). But the Blackwall romance option came up first, and I made the mistake of entering into a relationship with him. Unbeknownst to me, I couldn't break up with Blackwall for a LONG time (why are you locked in with him for so long?!? You aren't forced to stay with anyone else like this!!) However, I kept flirting with IB when possible, and I finally broke up with Blackwall during his judgment scene.

After the breakup, I did a few missions, then I went to Iron Bull, thinking the romance would trigger. But no... nothing. I think my approval is maxed, because I don't get any more messages when we fight dragons, etc. So basically... he likes me too much to start a relationship with me? Or... he wanted me to stay chaste for him? Is this the "bro code" at work, thus he refuses to date the same girl that his buddy Blackwall dated? What gives!?

So basically I got locked in with Blackwall for a long time, and then locked out of Iron Bull!?? It doesn't seem fair. I'm pretty sure IB isn't in a relationship with Dorian, since I rarely had Dorian in my party this time, and never got any banter.

....Damn you, Blackwall! You lied to me AND you're the reason why I'll never have another boyfriend!

(btw, I do like Blackwall, but this elven girl seemed more of a match for the Bull *sigh*)

This was my first DA:I playthrough in several weeks, and it'll be the first playthrough I won't be finishing. I dropped my elven Inquisitor off at the Dalish camp in the Exalted Plains, where she's going to live peacefully in Corypheus' new world.... )

I understand that the romances shouldn't make or break my playthroughs, but I was so bummed out by the whole thing, I just decided to quit.

I was doing some testing tonight, and to begin Bull's romance you need to have done his personal quest with the chargers, and have your approval high enough. Took me a bit to get his approval high enough, seems he needs more than some others. For a little while, I thought it was borked, but it turned out I just needed more approval, and some map hopping.

Bull's romance will start after breaking up with someone else, but I'm not sure how the bigger quests of Adamant & Wicked Eyes change that. I remember reading that some companions romances close off after those quests are finished.

With Blackwall, you only have a few times to break up. If you don't flirt on the battlement, you are locked out of Blackwall's romance for good. If you do flirt on the battlements, you can break up by talking to him at any point up from then to doing his personal quest to retrieve the badge. Once that quest is finished, you get the bedroom scene, and you either commit or break it off there. If you commit, you're locked in until the judgement, which is your last chance. This won't happen until after Adamant & Wicked Eyes, so it's pretty late in the game. If you leave him in Orlais, I believe you're locked out as well, since it never registers you breaking up with him.

@wmingua - sorry your playthrough went wrong! I'm guessing you don't have a save to go back to, since it would make you replay so much of it. If on the slim chance you hadn't done Bull's quest to take his chargers out to Storm Coast, then you should do that quest asap. Might trigger the romance!

Can I ask a semi-related question?  My Inquisitor is in a relationship with IB this game, but I spent a good chunk of time flirting with just about every character (even Cassandra, which was worth it for her awkward "I'm trying to be polite but I don't roll that way" answers).  I still have the option to start a relationship with Cullen and to start one with Sera every time I talk to them, even though I've given Bull the dragon tooth and he is no longer stupping the red-headed kitchen girls.  LOL.  Anyhow, is this right?  Seems like she should be locked in by now and the options to start a relationship with Sera and Cullen should be gone. I'm late in the game too - my next major mission is to go to the Arbor Wilds. Oh, and I've done all the personal missions for everyone.

Edited for clarity.

Throughout my Bull romance with a male character I had the option to flirt with Dorian almost until the end of the game. So I think just because you can flirt with them doesn't mean you can still start a romance with them.

There's one more romance scene -- did you have the scene where you talk about other people's safe words in bed? At some point there should be another option in the dialogue wheel -- something like, 'lets spend some time together'. I can't look it up exactly right now, since I'm away from the computer. I think this is both approval rating gated, and maybe quest related gated? But since you're at arbor wilds, you're pretty far along. Are you still getting approval from Bull if you kill Ventatori or hunt dragons? I think they put it at a higher approval rating, to try and keep people from blowing through all his scenes before they even get to the next main quest.

I can go up to Cullen and talk to him and one of the options is "Start a romance with Cullen" and with Sera it says "Start a romance with Sera". Not just flirting. My assumption is that this char would demand I break up with Bull first (I mean, maybe Cullen has a freaky side none of us know about)?  I know in Origins you could do that, but this game seems to lock you out once you lock down a love interest.  It just strikes me as odd since other people are locked in like with Blackwall.  I've never been "locked in" with Bull since the option has come up in every conversation with those two since the relationship began.

I thought this at first too! I was like, okay, I'm interested, let's talk about it! But then it worked out well for me -- gave me reasons to do some... uhmmm... "testing" on Blackwall and Iron Bull's romances. What I do for science :P

Yeah, both of those characters tell you to break up with someone if you ask to start a relationship. Sera gives you mild disapproval, for wanting her on the side. Do you have Iron Bull's romance card?

I would try raising his approval up some more (if you can), and then checking back to see if there's a new dialogue option, something along the lines of "let's spend some time together"
