Best? Loghain easily, he is probably the best written character in any bioware series imo.

Worst? Hmm idk, theres a few to be honest. Malcolm Hawke would be one, His story reads like a bloody soap opera.
Meredith is certainly up there, Red lyrium plot device completely ruined her character.
Bethany if only because she was so boring
Tallis

Best: My favorite characters

Worst: Your favorite characters

Always the way it ends up.

As an aside, I'm pretty sure we can't accuse any character of being a true writer avatar. That doesn't mean that they aren't, but we don't know the writers well enough to say. Of course any character will have something in common with the writer because the idea has to come from somewhere. You can't write a character you don't understand. But none of us are besties with the writing team, so we don't know what their personalities are really like. Even a public facade may be just that. I know lots of people whose game face bears little resemblance to the one they wear in private.

This is a tough question to answer. I can already see some responses in this thread where people basically insert their favorite characters, rather than genuinely singling out the worst/best written characters.

There is also the matter of who the voice actors may have been, for instance although Arl Howe plays only a minor supporting role in Dragon Age: Origins, Tim Curry really made the most of his limited screen time. He knocked that role out of the park, and that despite being in the shadow of Simon Templeman's fantastic portrayal of Loghain, really got my attention. Both Arl Howe and Loghain Mac Tir rank at the top of the best written franchise characters for certain!

I would add Leliana, Morrigan, Merrill and Aveline to the best written list to flesh out characters introduced prior to Inquisition. Frankly, the current crop of companions stands out for its excellent diversity and overall high quality of voice actors. Even those characters who didn't click with some fans, are unique and interesting in their own right, and I applaud the devs and writers for giving us Cassandra, Dorian, Sera, Iron Bull, Solas, Cole, Blackwall and Vivienne. I like all of the Inquisitors pals, but Varric was a rebound (and already a franchise fave).

"Worst" written is an even tougher choice, but I would agree that Orsino is a weak character. Tallis was an odd one, as she just didn't comfortably click for this franchise at all. Corypheus has to go on the worst written list, largely because he is a threat in name only. Whatever content cuts they made prior to release must have seriously undermined this villain. I mean it's either that or he was bungled in the worst possible way? He gets his ass handed to him time and again throughout Inquisition, having every plan easily foiled and then his final battle is beyond disappointing in it's execution; boy what a waste they made of a character that should have been epic? Ten optional high dragons proved tougher than the big bad; how is that even possible?

Well written gay character (top) vs Gaider's Gary Stu (bottom):

As unlikable as Sera is, her lesbianism is less in-your-face than Dorian, and her personality and motivations are more varied than "MUH SEXUALITY!"

The sexuality he, again, never mentions unless you get on his personal quest or if you flirt with him? You know, exactly like with Arcade?

This is another poorly disguised ''omg I had gay shoved down my thoat poor me!'' post, is it?
