Back in September, I started a thread asking what posters' favorite friendship arc was.  Now that Inquisition is out and we have some newcomers, I'm restarting the topic.  I've been wondering what your favorite friendships were.  Please note that this can include the LIs, but this isn't about the romance arc.  This is going to be full of Your Mileage May Vary, so let's not debate about someone's choices.  Goodness knows there is enough debate threads on the forums.   ;)

For me, the list goes:

DA:O

Morrigan--Her character development with a female Warden had a touch of realism that I liked.  I felt that I had helped open her heart and mind a little.  The first time I saw her choke up before the Battle of Denerim , I choked up a little too.  I was very happy to see her in Inquisition, and seeing the effects on her personality thanks to my Warden.   :D

Shale--My favorite bird-hating golem, that has one of the most interesting ties to dwarven history out of any character so far.  I never thought being called, "You" would be so heartwarming.

DA2

Isabela--While I've done her romance, I liked the friendship between Hawke (both genders) and her.  While she lies about her past, and she does lie a lot, she's very honest about who she is.  She presents herself with a lot of confidence.  I think the way she looks out for companions like Bethany and Merrill shows a deeper side to her character.

Fenris--"Here's to you Hawke!  A better mage than I have ever known!"  My only complaint was that offering to teach him to read was a flirt.

Varric--It's almost cheating.  I'm a former Varricmancer that gave up her ship, but it was the friendship that was truly the best part.

DAI

Cassandra--I felt like my characters have all managed to bond with her.  I love the way she opens up over time, and the way my Inquisitor got to tease her over love of romance novels.   I think I knew that she was going to be a good friend the first time my PC fell going to the Temple in the prologue.  The way Cass picks up the PC and says, "The pulses are coming faster now," felt like she was showing some compassion despite her frustration and need for answers.

Dorian--He reminds me of a lot of the gay and straight men I knew back in my Rocky Horror Picture Show days.  He's witty and charming, but more importantly, he seems like a true friend.   His love of books mirrors my own, and his loyalty (once earned) seems like the fiercest in the series so far.

What about you guys?  What's your favorite friendships and why do you like them so much?

Strangely, I saw Sten as a really good "friend" in Origins once I'd earned his respect by finding his lost sword.

The other characters were drama queens or had personal agendas, but Sten always said exactly what he meant right to my face, offensive or not.

So when he started calling me "kadan" -- a term of endearment which, in the Qunari tongue, literally means "where the heart lies" -- I knew that he meant it and that he'd die to protect me without a moment's hesitation.

It's hard not to feel fond of someone who displays that kind of honesty, loyalty and courage -- even if his small-talk skills leave a lot to be desired.

Mine are kind of weird.  Fair warning:

DA: O - Wynne:  I actually really liked and respected Wynne.  I think she was a tough old broad and, in real life, I have a soft spot for older ladies like that.  I have several good friends who are women in their late 40's and 50's and I enjoy every moment hanging out with them.  Wynne was a great character and I really liked how you could laugh a bit with her, but she was also a well-respected older professional lady.  I know some people think of her as a clucking hen, but I think she's one of the best characters in the series.

DA 2 - Isabela:  Without a question, Isabela is the best character in DA2.  She's awesome and I love her friendship arc.  I also love her friendship with Aveline.  She's the best.

DA: I - Vivienne:  Okay, I know that I lost some people with this, but I just adore Vivienne in her friendship arc.  She's a great character, so deep and complex and intriguing.  And when you treat her as a friend and support her, she becomes a trusted ally and confidant.  In her personal quest, when she lets down her guard as Bastien dies, it's just a fantastic moment.  Mary knocked it out of the park with her.

Honorable Mentions:  Alistair, Sten, Aveline, Varric, Cassandra, and Dorian

I would say that, depending on the personality of the Warden, the Zevran friendship arc stands out as my immediate favorite.  I always thought that he was a really cool character, and he was easy to get along with for most of my Wardens... I liked that he opened up about his past and the true reason for his acceptance of the contract on the Warden and Alistair as the PC gained his trust, but along the way to that he was always open about less weighty topics.  So yeah... the Zevran friendship arc gets my highest rating for sure.

Beyond that... I will say that Wynne had an enjoyale friendship arc (again, depending on the Warden... some of mine also liked to get under her skin... lol).  Although it was primarily a mentor and student relationship, I found that it also included the potential for friendship considering the fact that Wynne and the Warden were close to being equals in terms of power and (possibly) wisdom.  Although they were greatly separated by age and experience, I always found Wynne to be a constant source of support, etc...

I can't say too much about the friendship arcs in DA2 because I didn't really feel that kind of vibe most of the time... even with the characters that I liked, Hawke's relationship to them never felt very close or warm.  However, I fully understand that this has a lot to do with how I played Hawke and what kind of characters I as a player enjoy being around... I've heard good things about Sarcastic Hawke and Isabela, but I've never experienced it.  So with all that said... nobody from DA2 really deserves a mention.  Even the Varric friendship felt forced since I generally felt pressured into being nice to him so that he wouldn't get on my nerves with Rivalry path comments...

If I had to pick someone from DA2, I guess I would say Fenris, but even then, he was always a little distant... it was probably the most enjoyable of DA2, but when compared to all the DA series companions, his friendship arc doesn't stand out to me.

As far as DA:I goes... I actually thought the Iron Bull friendship arc was pretty good.  He is kind of a "dudebro," but sometimes that's a fun type of party member to have around (the tavern cutscenes with IB were particularly enjoyable).  For the most part, I felt that he and the Inquisitor I was playing as had a good relationship... Iron Bull wasn't judgmental or rude... now that I think of it, he didn't have a single quality that I disliked.  While he isn't the only character that I enjoyed from the game, I do feel as though he and my Inquisitor shared an actual bond of friendship that I didn't find anywhere else in the party.  Most of the others felt like co-workers, but I only played DA:I once so I probably missed some things.

edit: changed some wording here and there...

DAO - I was going to say Zevran but putting aside the terrible fact that he's an assassin :P it really bothers me how he killed his lady friend so easily, when the Crows set her up. But we'll pretend he learned his lesson and wouldn't make a mistake like that again. If so, he was my best friend...after him, my best friend would be Alistair.

Decided to add my favorite Awakening character and that would be Nathaniel.  B)

DA2 - Aveline - I thought it was so funny to flirt with her and it go over her head but it was also nice that she wasn't a loony tune like so many of the other characters in the game. :)

DAI - Dorian is a good companion but also, although I didn't like her at first, those of my PCs that became friends with Sera, think of her as a good friend because she was fun to talk to and hang out with.

Hmmm let's see... I became good friends with Leliana, and Morrigan said I was like her sister. I thought those were really sweet friendships! My warden also became best friends with Nathaniel Howe in DAA.

In DA2, my best friends were Aveline and Varric!

In DAI, Dorian, Iron Bull and Cole are my Inquisitor's pals, and her and Josephine have a nice sibling-like/girlfriends relationship. We talked about how my Inquisitor was infatuated with a Templar when she was in the circle, and Josie loved gossiping about it.

Nathaniel and Sigrun both get honorable mentions from me.  The friendship between Nate and a human Warden was fantastic.  The writers managed to make it feel a lot more natural than I expected.  Sigrun was a lot of fun too.

I goofed with Sigrun. I wanted to make her a Warden but when I returned to the Keep, it was time for the final battle. I wanted to get to know her more too, and yeah, I agree with Nate. When he first arrived I wasn't sure what to do with him, but when the option to conscript him came, I took a chance and was quite pleased with him and my lady Amell's blossoming friendship.

That's sadly a known bug.  The last person you recruit (Velanna or Sigrun) can't do the Joining.  Sigrun's personal quest is a little buggy.  If you play on PC, I can link you a thread that has links to mod fixes for bugged quests.  I made it a long time back.   :)

I had read about that so I recruited Justice last. Since he took over a warden's body, he doesn't need to do the Joining. This gets around that problem that the others have.

For DA:O, Morrigan. Her coming to see a female Warden as a sister was extremely moving, to the point where I consider it superior to the romance arc with a male Warden. Her opening up like that and coming to see someone in a familial sense is just as significant.

DA2, Varric. 'nuff said. Particularly sarcastic Hawke, their humour bounced off of each other wonderfully.

For DA:I, Dorian. My (female) Inquisitor and him were total BFFs that flirted shamelessly, but never went anywhere obviously. The result was bromance. It was beautiful.

DAO: Zevran and Alistair. Although in Alistair's case my Warden was pouting in his tent at night about how Alistair wouldn't love him. I also really liked Morrigan as a friend the time I didn't romance her. I literally dislike everyone else in that game. (Except Shale as I've never played with her.)

DA2: Isabela definitely and Aveline. Varric to a lesser extend, but I tended to be contrary about it since the writers just assumed we'd be close. Anders isn't the great platonically.

DAI: Cassandra, Cullen, and Josephine. I like most of the other characters but they never felt like "friends." And Dorian is great on the off chance I don't romance him.

I know this doesn't involve the protagonist, but I think the best friendship in the DA franchise is the one between Josephine and Leliana.

That's an excellent one.  The VAs play very well off of each other, and there is a chemistry between the characters I like.  By good chemistry, I mean like the crew from Ghostbusters had good chemistry.  I could really buy into Josie and Leliana's friendship.   :)

I loved, loved, loved the friendship between Merrill and Isabela, and Sebastian and Fenris.

As for the PC-
Morrigan's platonic relationship with the Warden (female or male) was A++, five stars, super duper wonderful. I don't think there was a single playthrough where we weren't bros.

ZEEEVVRRAAAN. I love his romance arc, but he's also really the best friend you could ask for. Treat him like a human being (err, elf. You know what I mean) and you'll earn his undying loyalty like that. He cheers you up and boosts your ego and kills the crap out of your enemies... what more could you want?

As for DA2, I loved Varric and Aveline's BFF relationship with Hawke... and I also really liked Aveline's rivalry path, actually. Ohh, and Isabela was another A++ friend once you scratched the surface. I like romancing her, too, but I'm just as happy being her friend.

And in DAI, my favorite friendship was probably with Bull. AND COLE because he's a precious cinnamon roll but ehh I suppose that's another sort of relationship entirely... but yeah.

At the end of the day, my absolute favorite non-romantic relationship in DA is between Carver and Hawke.

If we are including character-to-character friendships, I'd also add Isabela and Merrill, Isabela and Aveline (Act 3), Isabela and Varric, and Vivienne and Dorian.

DA:O - Morrigan: Still think this is one of the finest friendship paths in the series. Morrigan becomes a wonderful ally and a good friend, despite the initial tensions.

DA2 - This is essentially a tie between Isabela and Merill. Both were excellently well written friendship paths.

DA:I - Dorian and Sera, no question. Both are totally BFF-material regardless of the Inquisitor's gender. Thoroughly enjoyed their friendship paths.

DAO: (Morrigan and Wynn) but I won't say anything since other made better praise about them  :P So Instead I add to the List : Shianni and Rica (castless dwarf sister) . Why ? because while both are family , family can also be best friend . And these 2 are the only ones who dont end up in a tragic way (ok they may IF you choose so) but they dont come screaming 'I'm dead and become a ghoul or something' . Well the only one I felt the damn urge to go back as fast as I could...and doing the deep road first is a Nightmaaaaare.....and going back to denerim first and the alienage is another nightamre..Let me in !

DA2: Aveline . I had a deeper friendship with her and connexion then say Bethany . With bethany just felt overprotective . With Aveline , it was a Garrus feeling all over again . I could turn my back on my ennemy and know her shield is up ...shielding me .

DAI: Cassandra . She wowed me how blunty honest she was . There were stuff she couldve hidden (Seeker stuff) yet she told me about them . No matter if I would accuse her or lash at her....and I so wanted to scream 'Ya should be the Inquisitor....!' *Ahem* So yeah , I pick Cass . She is Loyale and own up for mistake she didnt even do...I think she is the best friend that ya always gotta save no matter what...cose she light the path ahead  ^_^

For me it has to be Varric, though more in DA2 than DA:I. And possibly Aveline.

I didn't really like any of the new DA:I characters much, in a friendship sense. They all seemed to be users rather than friends.

Edit: Oh, I am forgetting Cole. I liked Cole.
