I know threads like these have probably been done to death already, but I'm looking for opinions on which rogue class people like more.

I'm fully aware of how each skill tree functions, but i'm looking for an assassin-ey feel to my rogue. Problem is, I don't want to commit to the specialization and then later realize, "oh darn, I really miss thousand cuts and lightning flask". Cloak of shadows is broken and not even worth the slot, imo. But Assassin gives you hidden blades and the stealth cooldown passive. I can't make up my mind.

Thoughts?

Edit: I should add that I'm asking this because I've never actually commited to the Assassin spec. I've always rolled tempest or used cole. But I had so much fun using cole it got me thinking if it wouldn't be a bad class for my Inquisitor long-term.

First rogue I made I chose tempest and HATED it.  Sure it was fun to see thousand cuts, and being able spam abilities like twin fangs was pretty cool.  But whishing (i.e. missing) repeatedly with shadow strike sucked.  I admit I should have spent more time with death blow, but I had avoided it due to the massive stamina hit you take if you use it to kill something.  The worst thing about tempest is the loss of stealth.  There was no point anymore...no synergy.  Flask of lightning's purpose became purely for re-positioning.

I chose a rogue because I like the stealth mechanic.  It is a class-defining feature, just like barrier is to a mage or guard is to a warrior.

Next I chose assassin.  I can't get enough of it.  Hidden blades is like a mini-thousand cuts that you get to use every fight, multiple times.  It is so much fun.  And mark of death is great to see big numbers, and I love seeing big damage numbers on a rogue.  I admit the focus ability is lackluster, but truth be told the inquisitor mark of the rift is pretty awesome.  I laugh thinking it's sucking up enemies and dropping them in the fade, like a giant garbage bin.  And now that I've played a lot of the classes, most of the focus abilities aren't very flashy.

Basically, tempest was spam-athon special.  Long shot long shot long shot.  Or if you want to get really tricky you find some building that you can put your back up against and spam leaping shot.  Or you whish whish whish with shadow strike or twin fangs.  And if you get aggro you die.  Flask of frost just doesn't cut it, and to be honest it really sucked.  I thought frost of flask would let me solo cross-class combo, but they have to hit you for it to work.  Whose brilliant idea was it to make it appealing to get hit as a rogue?  You should avoid that.  And the frozen duration was too short IMHO, and I almost never was able to get off a cross-class combo with it.

Assassin is a lot of fun if you like stealth.  Your stealth resets all the time.  It is very rewarding.  And I love watching big enemies life just drop suddenly when mark expires.  Plus it lets me use all the other rogue abilities I love so much, without an over-bloated specialization tree.

If you like to mix it up on this front lines, Tempest would be more your thing.
Like Bigdawg, I personally found it repetitive.

Assassin has always been more my style especially because I really like the Hidden Blades + Knockout Bomb combo.

Well, here's my view on Tempest:

It needs Shadow Strike + Quickblade to work.

I tried everything, but because quickblade reduces cooldowns it's the only ability that makes me feel like the tempest is interesting. Otherwise, I ran into the same issue every single time. FoI > meh not gonna much. FoL > meh auto-attack / abuse rift stuns. FoF!!! OMG pew pew pew pew funz! Basically feeling kinda meh outside of FoF just didn't feel right.

I saw the tempest as being built around flasks and pumping that killer's alchemy, and then using other skills to supplement your ability to use flasks. So with quickblade I usually had 2 flasks ready to go which gave me options during combat. But every build I tried without it just left me wanting. It's a shame because some of the best abilities to use with FoF are throwing knives and spinning blades with poison weapons active. But the moment FoF ends, you have nothing else.

And so I stayed with Quickblade just so I could always have abilities on the ready. It's the only build that makes me feel like a storm rampaging across the battlefield.

Assassin let's you have your big opener and then you can supplement your build with other abilities so you're always using something. I dunno, I guess tempest just feels like it needs another 10 ability points and another hotbar.

Which brings me to my next beef about tempest, it's pretty crap until you have around 15 ability points. The tempest tree just requires a heavy investment to work to the fullest. Again I tried every combination of early tempest tree builds, taking just 1 or 2 flasks and while I was able to hobble along with just part of the tree, it's a spec that doesn't truly shine until you have all your tools. So I pretty much felt like playing assassin would have been the better choice, because by the time you're really a force to be reckoned with, you've reached the end game and the assassin tree would have been a powerful class to play as that entire time.

I mean, just look at the assassin tree, 6 points down the left side and you're pretty much golden, you can spend the rest of your points in other trees. Tempest on the other hand, 6 points down the right and you're missing a flask, thousand cuts, and ride the storm. Go the other way and you're missing Killer's Alchemy and Flask of Fire. So go 5 down the right and 1 on the left, you miss Ride the Storm and quicksilver and thousand cuts. An 8 point investment down the left + FoF and UF gets you the bulk of what you need, but you're still missing either Thousand Cuts or Quicksilver and you're missing Killer's alchemy. It boils down to the fact that Ride the Storm and Killer's Alchemy are so far down and they really make the spec.

At the end of the day, play what you enjoy. Of note, I don't use or count the FoF + Thousand Cuts in my tempest playstyle, pretty sure it's not meant to work. If it's intended, that pretty much changes everything.

Figured I would add my build: Rogue - Tempest

I know some people have reported trouble hitting with Shadow Strike/Quickblade - but it's just about positioning which is easy to do when things are frozen/in stasis. Also flank attack puts you in prime Shadow Strike range.

Actually, I would say that the OP should go with Artificer. It is the most flexible rogue specialization in the game.

You get cooldown reductions per critical hit which means if you like, you could stay in Stealth indefinitely or spam Steath.

You get crowd control, which is something no other Rogue specialization has.

Your specialization benefits not just you but your party as a whole.

You get an "Oh shite !" ability which can also be used strategically. For example, try casting a Fire Mine, deploying upgraded Fallback Plan and trigger it. Just delicious.

So I would advice you to take on the path of the Artificer, as opposed to the Assassin or the Tempest.

I'm not sure what you mean by this. What crowd control abilities do artificers have that other rogues don't? The elemental mines? In my experiences, those have been pretty sub-par in terms of controlling the battlefield, since as an archer you're too far away for them to do much and as a dual wield, you have better uses for your stamina.

I actually find the other specializations to be much better at crowd control, with Assassin being able to alternate between the two Knockout abilities and Tempest being able to fire 3 consecutive Full Draws and freeze any melee enemies around her with the ice flask.

I personally prefer Tempest.

Flask of lightning is a brilliant tool for if things get bad, and i have found it so useful against rifts and facing dragons to disrupt and revive.

As dual dagger, even with flask of frost, i find myself a little squishy, however as an archer tempest, i feel like i am in greater control of the battlefield (not so much as CC, just the flow).

Also, i love the 'lore' and flavor of the Tempest specialisation. And im traditionally a mage player.

Also, flask of frost plus twin fangs is a shatter combo. Very cool :)

If you want to decide between this two basically you need to decide whether you want to use your focus skill frequentely, or leave it for the dragons only (since thousand cuts is the only way the tempest can be really as good dealing damage as the assasin). I personally left the focus skills for dragons only during almost the whole game, so I preferred the Asssasin.

Anyway, you can always spec Sera or Cole as the 2nd option you wanted, and control her/him if you change your mind later in the game.

Alan sums it up perfectly.  I have used all 3 - artificer and tempest on archers and assassin on DW (yes - 3 rogue playthroughs).

Artificer is wonderful if your party has high crit.

Tempest is great if you have focus 3 but you can only use thousand cuts once outside of the fire flask glitch.

Assassin is beast mode.

I always have Sera in a group anyway so I would mark the dragon then use hidden blades and toss bees and have Sera fire flask and thousand cuts.  That pretty much = death for any dragon.

So ya - assassin for sure.
