If I leave Barrier off my hotkeys, will Guardian Spirit still produce a barrier when my health is low, or must Barrier be one of your eight hotkeys/screen icons for Guardian Spirit to work?
Will Guardian Spirit produce a barrier if you do not have Barrier as a hot key

^ it truly is. But you should have barrier on a hotkey anyway even if it is on a companion only. Should things go not according to plan you always have a barrier and two feet ![]()

I would actually advise that every mage in your party either has Barrier and/or Fade Step. Both are invaluable.

The only mage that does not need to have the barrier spell on a slot is the KE (no joking).

None of the KE abilities specifically interact with the spell called Barrier, just with defense barriers in general. For instance, they have a passive that makes barriers decay slower. That applies to a barrier from the Barrier spell, but also to one from Guardian Spirit, or from the KE passive that generates barrier when you damage things.

Most of the ke tree improves barrier no?
What OrionAnderson is trying to say is that there is the spell you can cast called Barrier, and then there is the magical defense called barrier. KE passives change how barrier decays or can grow, but none directly effect the spell Barrier. It doesn't matter who casts Barrier on your KE, the passives will still cause barrier to decay accordingly. Leave it to Bioware to name the spell after the buff.

The spell "Barrier" does indeed give the buff "barrier" that absorbs a certain amount of damage, but there are ways to apply the buff "barrier" that aren't the spell "Barrier". Imagine, if you will, there was a spell called "Damage". There are whole load of effects in the game that improve your "damage", but they would apply to everything that causes damage, not just the spell "Damage".
As such, it would've been a lot less confusing were the buff called something else (for example, "Rune" [imaginary cookie for those who get the reference]).

Yep I get it now. Other then Guardian Spirit. What are the other ways to generate barrier?

The KE ability (I forget the name) that converts the damage you do into barrier is the other one I believe.

I believe KE generate barrier with damage. They don't need to have a barrier for it to work.

Wow I thought you needed to have a barrier active. Then whatever damage you do adds to that barrier and keeps it up. I thought that it was the Fade Shield Talent did. I use Viv a lot and have the entire KE tree save the slow at the end. I do notice that her barrier stays up as she does damage but I am unsure if a barrier is created when she actually does damage without her casting it. I have barrier as a favored spell for her for the party so maybe I just never noticed because of Clean Burn/Fade Blade spam barrier is always up and she casts it.

I dont think so, its been awhile since i played my KE but I dont remember a barrier being generated from nothing when I attacked enemies. But I always have Barrier on hotkey 1 because it is such a crucial spell esp in higher difficulties.
You draw back the energy released by your enemies in your attacks against them. Any successful attack strengthens your barrier. The more damage you do, the more powerful your barrier becomes.
The description specifically states "strengthens". I only tested it like once because i was curious, so it may have generated and i didnt notice because i was being attacked, but im pretty sure it doesnt...

It says "strengthens", but it doesn't require pre-existing barrier value of more than 0. Doing damage while having Fade Shield passive will apply barrier to character even without Barrier spell. It works the same in MP with Arcane Warrior character.

My last play through was as a KE. I did not have barrier as one of my active spells once I specialized as a KE. Using spirit blade generated a barrier with every hit. Mostly I let Dorian cast barrier.

Playing nightmare KE and I don't have barrier keyed on them and it works just fine. Between my support mage, the damage dealing, fade step and upgraded mindblast, I'm almost always at full blue.

Technically this might be true, however in practice having barrier in combination with the KE abilities is huge. You become a walking juggernaut by using barrier in combination with Fade Shield. As long as you can keep pumping out the damage, your barrier stays up and you don't take any damage yourself. I've gone through 30-45 minutes worth of combat with a dragon having only put up my personal barrier once - and finish the combat without taking any damage and with my barrier never needing to be recast.
The fade shield only refreshes your barrier though, so I generally need to cast it on other party members regularly during the combat. But as for my personal barrier, I rarely if ever need to recast it.
