I tried playing with tactics turned on for the first little bit, but I like to be in control of my characters.  After actually learning how to use each characters special abilities without them randomly using them gives me a new appreciation of the game.  You begin to learn the game mechanics better, which allows you to better strategize.  I found that with tactics on, it became more hacknslash, and battles weren't as rewarding to me.

What are your thoughts?

Im not that big a fan of the tactics option either, i'm already use to baldurs gate and KoToR, so micromanaging is more comfortable for me, however with a lack of a queue system for spells this means i have to pause every 2 seconds to issue new commands >: (. Plus i dont really seem to understand how tactics function, i set my warrior to "if health less than 100%, activate berserk", i have yet to see him activate berserk :( sad face

I use tactics, but I get far more use out of them in less arduous battles. In the most challenging encounters, I end up pausing after just about every attack to reevaluate the battle.

I have tactics set to do things like pop a health potion if then are about to die (like less than 10% hp left) but other than that I agree with you. I prefer to micro manage them, but this does force me to pause every second or so. A spell queue system would be great.

edit: I really don't like having them cast spells through tactics because then I find they are on cooldown when I really need them :X

ON :)

although I'm suffering from the urge to whip up some new sets now that I've played the game more.

So my DPS chars I'll put them on a "Kill the Mage" tactic, then when all the mages are down I'll switch em to "Defend the Caster/Healer".

Just didn't want to stop playing for long enough to do it yet.

I've also come from playing the baldur's gate series.  In BG, there was very basic AI, though i played with that turned off as well.  I hated when a character would randomly jump infront of a fireball that i just cast! :pinched:

The tactics are 100% useless and you do not need them.

I have yet to have anyone explain to me how this tactics screen is used and why it would you use it.

Anyone care to explain or just call me a troll and avoid answering me?

I am loving the tactics actually. It is actually one of the things I like the most about the game. I'm used to the brain-dead AI from NWN and BG, where I was forced to turn off friendly fire due to idiotic party members. Now I can enjoy the battles without having to pause constantly to make sure no one is doing anything stupid. Finally an RPG where somebody actually put some thought into the AI!

I do the same I pause about ever 20 seconds I keep the tactics on for just  enough cushion if I mess up or I'm controlling my main which is the tank of the party.

I have to agree with what most of you are saying. I used tactics on all battles up until the battle before you wake up in the wild (doesn't' give away anything does it?) The spell cue would be a great help because pausing every time you attack gets a little tedious. Still happy with the way it works out though..

I've disabled tactics. Control all my characters.

I tried to work with tactics for last 3 hours. They are fine for not so hard battles, but form, lets say, 20 times Shale drink pot only some 3 random times when his health dropped <25% (i set that tactic for him), for the rest he just continued autoattack till death. Alisaitr, when his health dropped <25% drank out pot and then just stand there and wait for pot's cooldown, because his health still was <25%!

Well i know, i know - its computer after all, not human being:)

Yes. The only time I pause to micromanage is to use abilities I don't have enough tactic slots for.

Tactics off.

Pause&play is more fun.

I normally use tactics to buff the chars automatically ( ice weapon, summon bear, bard songs, rogue allways invisible, etc) and for potions, and then micromanage the party in combat.

ah, and I totally agree with the idea of a spell queue.. (and more info about combat, please)

I completely disagree with pause & play being more fun.

It causes the battles to seem segmented, and have no flow. Watching one move at a time is boring in comparison to watching a fluid sequence of events.

I try to use the tactics to the best of thier ability for that reason.

For the health potion users, make sure that tactic is at the top. They are evaluated in order. I also put my threshold at 50% to give some margin, but on the other hand, I am continuously running low.

Also, make sure you select the correct behavior from the top. That makes a big difference as well.

I'm playing with it on, to prevent my characters from doing something silly. Such as switching weapons.

Tactics off, micromanage on. If things go well, it's down to my choices, if things get fubar, it's down to me. That's the way I like it, and I find it more rewarding. More options to support micromanaged play would be a nice improvement (e.g. conditional autopausing - action complete, target gone, etc.), as the design at present more favours players at the other end of the control spectrum to micromanagers.

I have extensive tactics set up for all players and I have found that they work great for most situations. I do however take control over the characters when needed in more complex fights or boss battles. While they are not perfect it is far better than leaving the AI to its own devices. It all seems to come down to the tactics you use for each character and how much time you put into getting them right.

People here seem to be suggesting that by playing with tactics on you have "no control" over your characters, which is total rubbish to be honest, the whole point of the tactics system is that you DO have control of your characters, they do what you have TOLD them to do.

I have my tanks smash people who attack them in melee in the face with a shield bash, but I certainly don't need to pause the game to do it when I have a tactics option to tell my tank to do it for me. My characters drink potions on low health. Ogres get stunned when they grab people. High armour targets get shattered, groups of archers get a fireball in the face, and mages get destroyed with mana clash or with arrow of slaying. I've even set it up so my party members know when and when not to use sustained abilities. And do I have to pause the game, survey every enemy and look up some guide on who has armour worth using shattering shot on? Nope.

Tactics are fine, tactics let you control your characters with precision enough to play the game. I've done fine so far using tactics 95% of the time on hard mode for my first play through and I'm going to be stepping it up to nightmare for subsequent playthroughs.

They're not so easy to set up effectively if you don't know what you're doing. But that's a different matter entirely. If people like controlling individual party members that's great and all, but the tactics system works perfectly well the way it is.

It seems to work good for me, although I use it primarily for healing and buffs. One offensive tactic I set up:

My mage has Cone of Cold but not Stonefist....so I have Wynne set to cast Stonefist if an Enemy is Immobilized, this works great for a Shatter.
