Tactic off, I never even bothered with them. I've found that relying on AI in any RPG is going to cause alot of needless deaths. Not saying this Tactics system isn't more robust than most I just don't want to deal with the frustration of really needing a spell and it being on cooldown.

I do have pop a potion active at less than 10% health in case I miss a heal while in the thick of things but that is the only thing I have active and it rarely gets to the point where I need it.

Besides with tactics off I don't need to waste skills trying to get more slots.

Tactics off. I don't need them, I like to be in full control....

I don't depend on tactics. I micromanage, too used to BG2 and honestly haven't figured out a good system yet.

However, I would be very impressed if somebody went through this game on a tactics / heavily automated run. Beating bosses on automation would be much more impressive than soloing with a mage or rogue (which really is just time intensive).

Definately on, I like to control myself, and not my allies. :)

I would've used them if I didn't forget about them after a few hours in. :D
There isn't any option for reviving an ally when he dies though, or for group healing the whole party once everyone's health drops below a certain point. That and I like managing everyone myself. :)
I finished the game (normal difficulty) earlier this evening and didn't feel the need to use tactics at all, but should I start a new game on hard, I might reconsider.

I have them on, but I don't try to set too complicated of commands. I prefer to control the team myself, I just use tactics to cover the repetitive stuff.

Same here, I  love not having to turn on the same buffs every time I enter a new area.

As a few other people have posted here already, I have tactics set up and let the characters go through those. On a boss battle or rough patches of mobs I manually select and play each as necessary.

I played FFXII and it was one of the only things that made the game bearable, so I've had some experience with similar combat setups. If I didn't play FFXII, however, I might think of it as a waste of time.

Tactics on and brain on. I step in and micromanage when required.

I like the tactics, though as I've progressed further through the game, I've begun pausing more and more to the point that I'm basically playing it as a turn-based game. If nothing else, however, I like having the tactics just to ensure that all of my characters are dogpiling the same enemies instead of all going off to do their own thing. Tactics are most useful, I've found for things like:

Enemy: Attacking [self] > Use: Dirty Fighting

It helps to not have to be quite so aware of things like that, so that my rogues can focus on killing the tank's target without getting clobbered, themselves.

But mostly, I use tactics for defensive maneuvers, or for debuffs--Vulnerability Hex, for example, on elite+ mobs--and most of my offensive moves are performed actively by my explicit control.

I think if I had about three times as many tactics slots I could possibly get it to where I didn't have to pause the game too often, or even at all, though it would take some time to craft. The problem is that to do really good AI for your characters, you really need to be able to combine conditions. For example, with less than 50% stamina, you might want to simply bypass any programmed offensive moves and save it for defense, and you could do a "Jump to" tactic to accomplish that, but it eats up a tactic slot. Clever AI is a tricky thing, and you can't accomplish it too well with five or so conditions.

It would be fun, though, if somebody released a mod that increased the number of tactics--I could see myself wasting a lot of time trying to find just the right combination.

I did my first play through with tactics off. Playing a hybrid mage I am not sure it is viable to use your spells correctly through tactics especially AoE spells. That being said on my second play through using tactics have been really good at removing some of the tedium in combat.
The real difference is making sure to set your behavior correctly. For the most part I use aggressive mode because it will actively attack anyone in the vicinity which is the most important thing. If I need to hold people back all I need to do is high 'h' and they stop. So I don't need to spend a tactic like "Enemy: Nearest Visible -> Attack" because aggressive behavior will do that for me.

Tactics off. Whenever I've setup something, it usually irritates me, as it won't be a coverall, and most often it goes wrong.

Would be nice to have a few more conditionals, I'd like a few conditions before something would trigger.

I really enjoyed tactics.

The base templates worked wonderfully to make me understand how they can be used, and I played through the game with tactics active on hard mode.

It made the game more enjoyable and more fun for me. Especially most combats I got away with pausing maybe once or twice to give special instructions - even some boss battles worked out fine.

The most challenging thing was to set up my healer properly, though ^^

Man I love the tactics. One less spell on my spell bar is good because spell allocation is tricky. I find I have to leave out spells that I'll never use because I won't go into my spell screen to cast it and I don't have enough tactic slots to assign it (never invest in tactic slots because more important things are needed frankly)

But tactics is great for doing the stuff that needs to be done but i'm to lazy to do.

self; health 10% activate shield wall
self; any activate; rock armor arcane shield
enemy; boss or higher activate telekinitic weapons
ally; health 50% heal
self; surrounded 4 or more activate miasma
enemy; heavy armor sunder arms
enemy; elite or higher crushing prison
enemy; stunned attack (for the coup de gra)
enemy; health 75% winters grasp
with all those tactics on I can focus on AoE because AI does not work when you ask it to aoe it just doesn't do it right. CoC also doesn't work well or but that's alright because the AI could never do this as well as I can. I use tactics and I think it makes playing easier and fun. I still do a bit of micromanagment when I need to though. If anything put hold position on and take the reins.

Normal Difficulty, beginning to end, tactics on and the primary method of combat.  The only time I made a concerted effort to control my own characters was when I gave the beat down to the really really hard guys (High Dragon, Ser Cauthon or whatever her name was).  Didn't even use the tactics expansion mod, although that would have been exceedingly helpful.

I controlled the tank, Wynne setup as a healer with Arcane Warrior, I used her for buffs and heal spells on automation with full armor/weapon for her damage potential (I occasionally forcibly cast group heal), Shale as a melee DPS type who I occasionally manually switched to his Support Aura for bosses, and Dog.

Personally if i was playing on the console i would use tactics. I'm playing on the pc version and I like to use tactics for setups. If I cast sleep, morrigan follows with nightmare. If I get knocked down/grappled, morrigan immediately casts forcefield on me while wynne casts grease and morrigan follows up with a fireball. This is what tactics can do and it's awesome.

But yes when it comes down to it in any true adventure you're going to be faced with the unknown and spike damage, people will die and that's when you have to cast revive and manual a mana pot. I don't like to have tactics handle my health pot/mana pot use because what if it's the end of a fight? They just used a bloody mana/hp pot when they're going to regen a few seconds later? No Wai.

Use it or don't but it's nice to start a chain of effects and not have to switch character or pause the game.
