After putting in Disc Two during installation, the installation proceeds for a brief time before the error message in the title pops up.

I've tried lyssol's fix in http://social.biowar...766531/1#767671, to no avail--while trying to copy data2.rar, an unreadable file error pops up.  I don't see any flaws on the disc itself.

Am I boned?

Update:

In spite of Disc 2 appears to be clean, I tried cleaning it because I had nothing to lose. It still won't install, but I was at least able to copy the install files to the hard drive per the above thread.

However, when installing from the hard drive, I still encounter the same "Permission denied on a data file." This time, it seems to be english.rar causing the problem.

Come on, EA. This is ridiculous. There's another install method listed in the above thread, but I have no idea what in god's name he's talking about.

Update #2:

I tried unzipping the rar files myself; when unzipping the english.rar, I get a very long list of messages like this.

Cannot create (unzipped file from english.rar here)

The disk structure is corrupted and unreadable.

Total errors: 2832

I'm having the same issue, although it jumps to a failure screen before I can tell where it's failing. I can image the DVDs with Daemon Tools, I can extract all the .rar files manually with WinRAR, but installing via Setup.exe fails every time.

Hahaha let me help.
Install daemon tools lite, as per that link in the lyssol thread.
Once you have daemon installed then run it.
Make sure the panel is up (a little icon in the section near your clock, right click the lightning bolt cd icon and click "show panel").
Put disc 1 inside your DVD tray and with daemon push the "disc imaging" button (it's like a CD being covered by a black floppy icon).
It'll load and change the "destination image file" to where you want and make sure you make it .ISO.
Let it do its thing.
Once it is finished copying go back to the daemon panel and push the icon next to the imaging one. (Mount'n'drive...)
Your mass Effect 2 disc 1 should be under "user images" - double click on it.
Should pull it up like the real disc 1 was in.
Put disc 2 in your DVD tray, run the install on the VIRTUALLY MOUNTED disc 1 and it should go completely through.

WOO!

Actually, I tried that, and it didn't help.

However, I DID get it to install... to C:\\Program Files.

I was trying to install to D:\\Mass Effect 2\\, since that's the drive I keep ME1, Steam, and my other games on, but it kept failing. Apparently it only likes my system disk.

Isn't D: normally associated with Disc drives? maybe it thought you were trying to pirate it.

It's unlikely that they would make that assumption. My guess is that they either didn't account for people installing outside of their Program Files folder, or my D: drive has a bad sector.

Reply to Guylemer; re ME 2 installation problem: When I purchased my Mass Effect 2 (not the collector version) on Jan 26, the store said there were some faulty CDs distributed from the manufacturer. They said that if I had trouble installing, it could be exchanged it within 30 days. Mine did install ok.

But I don't know how the store knew about faulty CDs in distribution prior to the game release date.

So, still not too late for you to try for an exchange (Feb 8/10) if that seems necessary.
