So, as most of you probably know, each Dragon Age installment has had a companion from the previous game join us;
Oghren: Origin -> Awakening
Anders: Awakening -> 2
Varric: 2 -> Inquisition.
Now, the question is, who shall be Bioware's next choice?
So far we've had Warrior -> Mage -> Rogue, with all 3 being male. In regards to 'fairness', i'm assuming it'll be a female non-rogue, which means either Cassandra or Vivienne. Though these choices could have greater priorities, depending on if a certain story decision happens to them or not.
Who do you guys think could join us next game? What ONE companion would you LIKE to see come back for more?
DA4's Carry-Over Companion.

If they continue the pattern, unless they use Varric again, which I doubt, I think it has to be either Sera or Dorian. They're the only two that the player doesn't really have a hand in shaping their future (meaning whether or not Vivienne or Cassandra are Divine, whether Bull is Tal-Vashoth, whether Cole is human or spirit). Sera and Dorian stay the same Sera and Dorian regardless of what you do, so they won't have to work in two hugely different outcomes to include them. I'd probably put my money on Dorian since he tells you he's intending to head back north sooner or later and the devs have said they want to head north for DA4.

Varric said he wanted to go back to Kirkwall at the post-cory party though. If DA4 is going to take place at the north, Dorian would be likely to reappear as he said he was going back to Tevinter.

I think it will be Varric again. We haven't resolved either the Bianca storyline or the Red Lyrium, so unless it's resolved via DLC I think he'll be back. Also, Brian Bloom voices the DA Keep. LI's don't return so unless they change that it's basically Viv or Cole. Viv has the possibility of being Divine, so she's probably a no-go, and Cole has two completely seperate paths which would also be difficult to implement.
So... Yeah, we'll probably be seeing Varric again.
I hope its not Varric.

Hmmm... it could be an adviser maybe? Cullen is capable of being a companion, and it would cause a bunch of people to go crazy (in favor and against) in the forums
.
Beyond that, maybe Sera? She doesn't really have any divergent paths as a character. She's optional in DA: I, but that hasn't been a requirement for past carry-over characters.

It might be someone who has a role in DAI, but is not a companion. Like Harding, maybe. She's had a little development so far, is recognisable, well-liked (and a good option for their first dwarven LI), can't die and has a VA that has voiced a full companion before (so we know she's good at it!).

No as sten would say
Da don't need more returning characters they already practice that to ridiculous degree where various people jump around world just to join/meet new and another protagonist for example cullen that was in every game and leliana that pretty much with writers pet status is in most dragon age products.

There's no reason they can't do both, in fact, doing both is the precedent. You still had Oghren/Anders/Varric carrying over while Merrill and Isabela went from NPCs to companions, and Cassandra did as well.
So they could retain someone and promote Harding.

That's a very good point about the red lyrium. If it causes even more problems in the next game, no way would Varric walk away just yet.

I reckon it will likely be Sera. That's not because she is my favourite, no. It's because I think she has the most to gain from joining another group of people.

If not, I would bet on Sera. But she is a LI so they should have a good explanation. Like, her being sent on a mission by the Inquisition... Or Dorian. But I believe he is more likely to appear as NPC. Or... scout Harding, but it doesn't make much sense IMHO, it would be fanservice.
I wonder if we will see characters from previous games. Like Fenris or Zevran. I wouldn't be surprised to see them return as companions.

I'm in the strange boat where for once I'd quite like to see a whole new group of companions. I also wouldn't mind a named NPC being promoted to companion, like Harding or maybe one of Leliana's spies, but I still think Varric is most likely to return from a story perspective.

Agree that story-wise Varric may return, but perhaps the Red Lyrium storyline could be resolved in DLC? Then Varric could go and DA4 would be totally open to a variety of both new and existing Chars.
If heading to Tevinter, Dorian I think would def be there, Calpernia too, but imagine how hilarious having Sera along would be? All those posh parties etc?
Hmm lots to ponder.

So I don't think any of the main characters will be turning up as companions. Though they will undoubtedly make appearances.
The only exception might be Varric (though he could be more observer/adviser next time around). I like varric and hope he does return - he's also the unofficial historian of dragon age.
Morrigan too. That story doesn't feel finished by a long way.
Minor characters who could be promoted: Harding, Krem (assumed dead but vague enough that you could massage it), Calpernia (ditto).
Or maybe no Varric directly but Bianca instead.

I kinda have a feeling it would be Morrigan.
She is invincible, her ultimate fate is impossible to influence in an extreme way, and she keeps being relevant to the plot.
Varric seems highly improbable.
Don't get me wrong, he's amazing, but his prolonged affilation with the Inquisition seemed odd enough already. He has -asides from personal things like Bianca, and the Red Lyrium, which isn't really something he can influence- nothing more to say. He will always help the good cause, but I just think he belongs in Hawke's gang and whatever they contribute to fighting the big bad. It would have made a lot more sense if he had accompanied Hawke to Anderfels at this point. I mean, he never really develops a strong personal connection to anyone within the Inquisition, does he?

Oh i'd love a whole new cast. It's always fun getting a new batch of people to love and hate.
I agree with the minor characters getting promoted to major ones (ie; merril, isabella and cassandra), so that would make sense with Harding (she'd also probably be the fem. dwarf romancable companion everyone wants lol)
I was originally thinking Sera, but I wanted to beleve that Bioware wouldn't use 2 rogues in a row (though they did use 3 males in a row... and the 3 promoted characters were all female... hmmmmm...)

Calpernia I bet. The Cullen effect ! She seems to have a lot of fans, so maybe Bioware will make her come back. And if the story is moving to Tevinter, it could make sense. She is not a companion in DAI of course, but the pattern is not a rule. I believe that, this time, our companions just stay in the Inquisition.
I think she'll be back, but it would be better if she stayed an NPC. She's a leader in her own right, I don't want her to become subordinate to my character in the next game.
As for who may come back.... let's see who is "safe": exclude all LIs, exclude possible Divines, exclude people who can be dead, exclude people canonically invested in staying with the Inquisition, exclude people with radically different outcomes of their personal quests. That leaves... Varric. Ugh. Really, I rather like him, but I don't want to see him in yet another game. He's already lost profile in DAI.
So, I'm all for a completely new cast of companions.

DAI felt, to me at least, like the end of a trilogy / end of this run of stories. Many of the characters stories has reached an end point (or is in all likelihood will be ended through dlc or an expansion).
So I don't think any of the main characters will be turning up as companions. Though they will undoubtedly make appearances.
The only exception might be Varric (though he could be more observer/adviser next time around). I like varric and hope he does return - he's also the unofficial historian of dragon age.

Leliana or Varric ![]()
Just kidding, I hope they chose someone else.
Anders and Varric were tied to plot of games they carried over, Anders with mage rights and Varric with red lyrium. If the next game is based in Tevinter, Dorian would be likely choice. From NPC characters I think Bioware could carry Krem to DA4 as well like they did with Isabela and Merrill in DA2 and Cassandra in DAI. So Dorian and Krem currently are my guesses.
Personally I'd love if BW brought back DAO's, DA:A's or DA2's companion as DA4 companion though. Zevran and Sigrun would be my favs.

Assuming the next PC is not the Inquisitor again, I want the entire cast of companions to be brand new. I want to have a totally new set of backstories and personalities. I don't want their past history from the other games becoming part of the narrative. Maybe one or two can show up as NPC's if the story calls for it, but I don't want them to be followers for this new person.
