That was a trilogy with the same protagonist and they continued most of the companions for all three games in one way or another, with Tali and Garrus and companions and Liara with a major NPC role and her own DLC.

It doesn't mean that they won't do the same with a major NPC like Varric, who played a pivotal role in several major arcs, including Corypheus.

May not even be a companion->companion transition. Maybe Harding or Sutherland will join us.

or MINAEVE

I remember before the game when Cam Lee was like "you guys have a LIBRARIAN, she's kind of like a research assistant" and everybody was like TOTES GONNA BE DAGNA and I was like uh prolly gonna be a new character gaise.

and I was RIGHT

Minaeve and Helisma are ossim, BEST LIBRARY BUDDIES

now if only they could find me the financial records of the Kingdom of Hannover for the decade beginning in 1783 I'd be set both on creature research AND dissertation research

I think it would most likely be Dorian or Harding. I'd also love either of those options.

Though I'm really, really down with the female Dwarf warrior thing.

Minaeve is a favorite of mine (I love how she looked after the tranquil), but it seems like it would be really difficult for her to come back. Not just because her self-proclaimed lack of talent for magic would make her an unlikely candidate for party companion, but that her potentially deceased status would make it difficult to implement her even as an important NPC.

I'd like it though, if they could have her return.

It's times like this that I feel a bit embarrased, as what I would like versus what everyone else wants is the complete opposite.

I really don't want a whole new mess of companions thrown at me again. After three games and an expansion, I'm a bit at capacity for new people. Perhaps it's just my natural introvert personality? I would rather have a handful of people that I know well rather than a whole beanie baby collection of characters I only kinda know. Then again, I'm also one of those "please don't make me be a new hero again, I'm tired of being told stuff I did as if it were second hand knowledge" people. I would much prefer to see multiple returning characters, and then perhaps 2-3 new companions. I suppose the only thing I could compare that to is Mass Effect 3. But considering how I felt about Varric in DAI versus Varric in DA2, I am hesitant to have anyone back.

If given the option, I would like to see Lace Harding as a companion, and as a LI. I enjoyed her as an NPC, and would love to see her fleshed out more. When it comes to current companions, Varric and Cole are the only logical future companions. Generally if you have an alternate path (such as being a romance, divine, possible death, ect.) you won't see them as a companion again. I enjoy Varric mostly, but I would rather see him retired as a companion and instead serve as a contact or advisor.

I'm apparently in essay mode, I apologize.

I agree with pretty much everything you're saying. I feel like we've got a nice pool of companions, and the story would benefit from developing them further. That's not to say we can't introduce new people, but I would like a significant amount of development for the returnees.

As for who will probably come back?  Sera. Because:

Otherwise why did we learn that she has deja vu, ears that always point towards the fade, and prophetic dreams, only for that to build to nothing? Why was our last cutscene conversation with her a religious debate that revealed Sera's anxieties about the idea that the Elven gods are real - a new plot thread - instead of something that would close out her story? Why is she the only character whom you can't influence and who doesn't plan on going anywhere?

who cares about parties or even probability, I just think she's great

and I made the cardinal error of referring to the electoral principality of Braunschweig-Lüneburg as the "kingdom of Hannover" anachronistically in my first post, which I am only now just realizing, because I am slightly wasted

Woah...Did you just change your name and avatar at the same time?

This is going to take getting used to.

And I don't know what you just said, but have a like anyway.

VIV

VIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIV

She has the most consistent ending, since her personal quest is more about you personally befriending her rather than changing anything about her life. Her lover always dies and she always remains a political powerhouse.

The only wrench in that plan is that she can aaalso be divine. But frankly I don't see a reason she can't be divine and be making powerful allies with the next protagonist.

And I want more Viv damnit she needed more personal quest!

Personally I love it when seemingly inconsequential characters from the previous games get elevated into important roles (like Isabella in DA2 and Samson in DAI).  Its fun glue to hold the franchise together, but it also gives the writers a lot of freedom to flesh the character out since their isn't a lot of narrative baggage to sort through.  With that in mind, Scout Harding would be my first choice, hopefully as a romance option so that dwarf players can finally have one (I'm rooting for you folks, I really am).

Of the playable characters, my choices would be Dorian, Bull, or Sera.  I doubt the fact that each is a potential LI will have much impact on a decision to include them moving forward.  Morrigan and Liliana both had significant roles in DAI.  They find ways to write around that sort of thing.

As for who I could live without: I think I'm ready to move on for Liliana in any major role.  I like her a lot, but both in game and in my own head, her story feels complete to me. Its time for her and my warden to ride off into the sunset, with a few passing references and nothing more.  As Varric my put it, they're getting too old for this ****.

I'd definitely want to see Bull if Dorian was involved due to how significant they both are. I'm sure BW would be able to fit him in there.

That reminds me, whatever happened to that dreamer Feynriel, the one Hawke saves from the Fade? You think BW has something in store for him and might become a possible companion in DA4?

Calpernia doesn't die, she "dies" by jumping off a cliff into a waterfall. They could totally say that she lived through it if they wanted to. However, I think making her a follower would kill all the interesting things about her. I do expect her to show up in DA4 if it's in Tevinter, though.

If they bring back Bianca, I'll revolt. She's freaking awful.

She is by far the best thing in Inquisition, you really are strange :)

She was all sorts of interesting, engineer, carta ties, Varrics background and she had more..

Not to forget paragon material. AND she figured out one of the biggest facets of Red lyrium.

Ideally, I'd have Vivienne. She's by far and away my favourite character in the DA'verse. For pretty obvious reasons, she's unlikely though. With her power base in Orlais, (not to mention potentially the White Divine), and the general desire in the community for the story to push towards the north of Thedas, there's very little logical reason for her even to cameo up there, let alone be running about with the latest ragtag bunch of misfits. I'm just hoping Inquisition DLC will let me enjoy more time with best friend Divine Victoria.

People have pointed out that Varric's story isn't finished, but honestly, I think now it's best left to other media like the comics. Even if I only started liking the guy in DAI, there is too much of a good thing.

The absolute worst case scenario for me would be Cole. Although, so far, the returning character has always reversed my opinion of them, so... you never know.

I don't need any companions to return as companions but I'd like them all to return if possible in the story either as allies, enemies or just to make an appearance (like King Alastair atleast).

I do not desire to have any returning characters in the next Dragon Age game. Bioware instead could have random npc dialogue, about who is Divine or who rules Orlais and about the Inquisition.

Therefore, it would be best to allow, Bioware the freedom to create a new cast of characters for the next installment of Dragon Age.

Calpernia I bet. The Cullen effect ! She seems to have a lot of fans, so maybe Bioware will make her come back. And if the story is moving to Tevinter, it could make sense. She is not a companion in DAI of course, but the pattern is not a rule. I believe that, this time, our companions just stay in the Inquisition.

If not, I would bet on Sera. But she is a LI so they should have a good explanation. Like, her being sent on a mission by the Inquisition... Or Dorian. But I believe he is more likely to appear as NPC. Or... scout Harding, but it doesn't make much sense IMHO, it would be fanservice.

I wonder if we will see characters from previous games. Like Fenris or Zevran. I wouldn't be surprised to see them return as companions.

And what if we chose the mage side? And Calperina never shows up?

I still want Tallis back.

But nah, please no companions returning as companions. I wanna meet new people. What they should do is a companion-centric DLC though.

She still exists. I think there's a mention of her in a note somewhere if you do the mage path.

As a side note,
Does anyone else hope that the coronation of Divine Victoria makes it into a DLC? With a conspiracy plot in an expanded Val Royeaux?

Yes! I totally support a social-centric dlc, also more Val Royeaux is always good.

Aw, seeing Cass dealing with all the pomp would be delightful. Divine Cass in that preposterous outfit Justinia had  . ...
