The absolute worst case scenario for me would be Cole. Although, so far, the returning character has always reversed my opinion of them, so... you never know.

Cole makes a lot more sense as a character if you've read Asunder, in case you haven't done so. That shouldn't have to be a requirement for enjoying him as a character, but reading the book between my first playthrough and playthrough 2 made him a lot more interesting for me.

Lace is a strong canidate due to walking a thin line on being a romance. No return character has been a romance for the previous game. That kinda shows favoritism towards a romance character and while that romance gets expanded on even without the inquisitor the others wont have that extra content. Flirting with lace hasnt really went anywhere unless dlcs expand and explore that more lace is not a romance option and makes it easier for her to return. Cole is my #2 due to Viv being divine possibly and Varric is #3 because I dont think he needs to return again following another hero let him rest. Either way the rogues seem like they will return if we get a return companion.

If we're heading North, my coin is on Dorian or Bull. Maybe a cameo by Varric. Though Cole is a pretty good contender as well.

Harding or Dagna. I'm leaning towards Dagna, personally. There's some dwarfy goodness in the story, that we just haven't gotten to understand yet. They'll want to clarify whatever it is they've hinted at in conversations with Dagna, I think.

Personally, I want to see Ser Barris again. Really. What is it with Templars catching my attention so neatly??

As a side note,
Does anyone else hope that the coronation of Divine Victoria makes it into a DLC? With a conspiracy plot in an expanded Val Royeaux?

Definitely. In fact, the way you make it sound there, it could be perfect as DAI's Citadel DLC, since no matter what, the (vast majority) of the cast can be back together regardless of the ending.

Cole makes a lot more sense as a character if you've read Asunder, if you haven't done so. That probably shouldn't be a requirement for enjoying him as a character, but reading the book between PT1 and PT2 made him a lot more interesting the second time.

I have read Asunder. I didn't like the character there and I dislike him even more in DAI. Don't get me wrong, I think it's an interesting concept, and I enjoy reading about Cole, but experiencing him is another kettle of fish entirely.

Since the da team don't bring back a squad mate that is a romance option from the past game maybe cole i don't see them bringing back Varric again. But harding is my bet.

*cough* umm Garrus *cough*, Tali *cough*

While true about Garrus, Tali was actually not going to return in ME3 as a companion and would have been just a side-character, but the writers put their collective foot down and demanded that she return.

Still, as others have said, the difference is that ME was a trilogy about Shepard and often had characters tied to them reappear here and there, whereas DA is about a series of seperate protagonists with their individual stories overlapping here and there?

Minaeve is a favorite of mine (I love how she looked after the tranquil), but it seems like it would be really difficult for her to come back. Not just because her self-proclaimed lack of talent for magic would make her an unlikely candidate for party companion, but that her potentially deceased status would make it difficult to implement her even as an important NPC.

I'd like it though, if they could have her return.

I adore Minaeve, she has a great personality and backstory. I also liked how with a Dalish Inquisitor, after finding out that she was thrown out by her clan, even the "Actually, my clan didn't do that..." option has them sound extremely sheepish and awkward, before she mercifully interrupts them.

I wished she'd not be replaced once we hit Skyhold, because despite her lack of dialogue, it was nice to have her there as the resident research assistant in Haven whenever you needed to drop something off.

Maybe it's because she's tranquil, but it's harder to forge that kinda connection to Helisma and as a result, when I get to Skyhold, I tend to drop stuff off with barely a passing glance at her? Which is a shame because I feel bad that the Tranquil suffer enough neglect already, let alone having my Inquisitor be the one doing it without meaning to? And proves that Minaeve is far more considerate than that, since she actually does give the Tranquil the time of day and goes out of her way to protect and look after them.

I think Cole could work, but would mean basically two versions of Cole would be made, depending on your choices in this game. Dorian, if we head to Tevinter would be a nice companion, but he's a LI. I expect, like others have mentioned, that it would be someone like Harding or one of the MP characters who seem fairly fleshed out (at least as far as I could tell from the one time I played it).

I wouldn't mind someone like Abelas or Michel, but there may have to be some retconning.

Well IF we go north, Dorian makes sense as does Iron Bull, even as Tal Vashoth he could choose to return to warmer climates, and, unless you romanced him, might even stay with Dorian. Varric and/or Bianca makes sense if red lyrium is a problem again. Cullen, he's been in every one so far as has Leliena so, those two would not surprise me no matter the story.

Solas is gone but could reappear, Sera I hope not. Vivienne or Cassandra, could but probably as NPCs, not companions. No more Josephine unless it's for Inquisition 2. Morrigan could be back as a companion, or depending on time, if you have the dark ritual done in the keep Kierian could even grow up and be an option.

Alternately, they could go with a whole new cast entirely. We just have to wait and see when DA4 is announced in a few years.

Solas almost certainly will be back in future games, unless for some reason they off him in DLC..but I don't think he would be back as a companion.

I think she was trying to avoid an argument, stop us from putting our foot further in our mouth, or didn't care to hear our excuses?

Look at it from her point of view, she's already bitter that her clan left her to die, so possibly finding out that other clans aren't as mean-spirited and actually try to find ways to help a surplus of mages in their ranks, would make her all the more angry? After all, the clan who kicked her out, presumably included the same two people who were her parents.

My foot is nowhere near my mouth in this conversation. If her clan happened to be evil, that has nothing to do with mine, or even necessarily that of Dalish society as a whole (not to mention that their "find your own life" idea worked exactly as planned).

Well I'd hope Dorian for a very specific reason: I want to see the next game centred on the Imperium, because I really want to see that place. And so having Dorian in it would make a lot of sense.

I pray to God, Buddah, Toutatis, Jupiter, Athena, Anubis, Itzamna, Thor, Hubbard, Unkulunkulu & Neil deGrasse Tyson that it won't be Sera.

That aside I like my Cassandra. And I wouldn't mind to see Cullen as a companion (finally).

As for the rest..

Iron Bull is totally the kind character we see once, like Oghren (I consider Origins & Awaking as one, same generation of Dragon Age if you will), and honestly in this case rightfuly so.

Solas , I wouldn't be suprised if he becomes the baddy in an expansion & dies before we see 4. Let me rephrase that, I HOPE that's the case. The potentially tragic villain.

Vivienne, meh.. and she's probably too busy with her own agenda.

Cole.. I honestly got so tired of listening to his gloominess. So rather not.

Blackwall, I mean, you know, he's kinda like a doggie, a labrador, so maybe he'll be a summon like the mabari in DA2.. hehe. Anyway, I just don't there's much left to his character, you've got him pretty much figured out 100% after the first 10 minutes.

I don't think any of them are suitable to be in the next game. I know only one thing: Solas and Mythal/Flemeth are gun be big. Unless they resolve all that in DLC.

Yeah I don't want any of companions/advisors back as companions, maybe in a different role capacity. Varric really didn't worked for me.

Yeah, but as we saw from our conversation with Josephine, the preconceptions about the Dalish elsewhere are kinda all over the place, which isn't helped by how Dalish clans can run the gamut from friendly traders, to incredibly hostile roving bandits?

Having been half-starved by the time the Templars found her, coupled with how she was raised in the mostly-human Circle, probably enough to make her accept the commonly held belief that the Dalish are "savages" and tint her childhood memories of them through jade coloured glasses?

And while it did work out for her, most of those abandoned kids probably ended up either dying of starvation (as she came close to), going feral, or being killed by Templars who were far less understanding and willing to show mercy than the ones who found Minaeve?

Same. If we are heading north to Tevinter, then Dorian will definitely be going there and I'll be pissed if he takes a character slot from a new character just to hear more of his self-absorbed whining and narcissism. If he absolutely must be part of the group, I'd much rather have him in an advisory role than hanging out with the DA4 cast in the frontlines. I was actually appreciative that they did this with Leliana in DAI. Of course, if they are going to bring in a character from DAI (which doesn't have to be a thing, if we remember brothels and three-ways with Zevran), I'd prefer Harding or a DAMP character like the Hunter or Archer.

What's important about the Mass Effect precedent is that it shows that BioWare is comfortable telling NPC stories over multiple games. Mass Effect having a single protagonist was one criteria that allowed it to make sense for characters to return, but it's certainly not the only criteria.

"This hasn't happened in Dragon Age yet" really isn't strong precedent unless there is an actual rationale for continuing to set the same precedent.

It certainly had to have been key in bringing LIs from one game to the next. Imagine how quickly the boards would burn down if they brought back Cullen and made him an LI as they did Tali and Garrus. With a new protagonist their fans would get the torches and pitchforks up to Canada in record time! The last thing I want to see is fewer romance options because they took up one of the companion slots with a previous LI they made unavailable to the new PC.

You always have companions who aren't LIs, though. Varric wasn't one in DA2, but it wasn't because they were saving him to be one in DAI. If they would choose to retain Sera or Dorian as a companion, they just wouldn't be romancable like Leliana wasn't this time. I doubt we'll ever be able to sleep with every single companion we have because it limits the sort of stories they can tell if everyone has to be available.

Scout Harding will be in DA4. If this doesn't happen, I'll eat Cole's hat.
