I find the open world genre for games like witcher 3 and inquisition questionable...

Really? All I saw was a human looking figure dressed up in a suit that looked to be made of metal or something. The king of the wild hunt looked more ghostly as I remember, so what happened to make it go from the ghostly apparition I knew in Witcher 1 to the humanoid in armor as seen in trailer of this new game?

That's his  corporeal form. The King and riders of the hunt have a specter form and a corporeal form. This is explained in both the books and TW2 where you see The king of the Hunts face in his corporeal form.

In TW though he only showed up in his specter form.

I did not realize TW3 was based around a save the world type plot, I thought Geralt had more personal reasons for tracking down the hunt? Of course if you have heard things about the plot that I have not KEEP IT TO YOURSELF as I have been trying hard to avoid Witcher 3 spoilers, not even watching gameplay footage or trailers

As with a lot of tropes in The Witcher, there's more to the bad guys and saving the world plot than what's on the surface.

OT:The problem with open world story telling is having urgency while letting the player take a break and explore the world. I haven't really seen this reconciled, nor am I convinced it can be done. I think it's just one of those aspects inherent to a genre that has to be accepted.

So what you're saying is...More games need to be like Uncharted, Last of Us, and The Order?

No side stuff. Just the story.

Because the problem you propose has been in literally every RPG ever.

"Hey Cloud, Sephiroth is gonna summon Meteor and destroy the world!"

"Yeah, yeah, that's cool I guess. But I'm trying to breed the perfect Chocobo over here Tifa."

-or-

"HEY! Link, you need to clear the Temples and Destroy Ganon!"

"Yo, Navi one sec...I gotta get this jar of stuff over to this guy in a limited time span so he can give me a thing I can give to another guy. THEN I CAN GET A BIGGER SWORD!"
