The idea of a roguish caster is not a new one in fantasy games or in science fiction games.

In Dungeons & Dragons, you have Arcane Tricksters. In Elder Scrolls, you have Nightblades. In Mass Effect, you have power-based Infiltrators.

So for Dragon Age, does Tempest take the spot for the roguish caster ?

I mean the way the Flasks function is very much like how you would expect cloak spells would function when they are distilled into volatile chemicals.

Additionally, the Assassin is the pure rogue specialization whereas the Artificer is the trapper specialization..

Or does the honor of being a rogue-mage hybrid of sorts in Dragon Age go to something like the Shadow ? The way their abilities work is very much how Illusion spells and shadow magic would work. Or is it perhaps the Bard with their words which take on an almost magic-esque property ?

Thoughts & comments ?

Well, from the lore POV, you are either a mage or you are not. I guess you could call these classes mage-like.

But it would have been interesting to see an actual Rogue-Mage.

Yes that is what I meant. Mage-like. I believe Dorian in one of his banters with Sera says something along the lines of  :- "You smash a flask of fire all over you to do what you do and you don't think that is magic, even a little bit ?" to which Sera responds in her usual manner.

Bioware most likely won't make an actual Rogue with actual magic powers because it will be overpowered. Mage Warrior Hybrids...Knight Enchanter & Arcane Warrior...Look how powerful they are...Add stealth and DPS to that while removing tankiness and you get something like the Asari Infiltrator.

Kingdoms of Amalur did classes best. Ahh, spellblade, let me count the ways I love thee...

Anyway, the tempest is more of an alchemist than a caster, but the effect i the same, yeah.

It's essentially a buff/debuff class. It's not a caster archetype because you're not casting any spells or abilities directly at an enemy.

As far as lore goes, it's a unique concept. Smashing a flask of magically enchanted liquid over yourself for increased speed, reflex and protection is something I've personally never heard of before.

Yeah it dose seem like a mage/rogue hybrid.

I never liked the idea of smashing potions on yourself so I imagine that my Tempest Inquisitor is using the connection to the fade from the mark to manipulate the world in a small area around themselves. Obviously this  has no basis in lore, its just a silly head canon.

Yes and no. You ARE producing magical effects, but you're not casting them on other people, and they're produced by alchemy, not magic. From a simple viewpoint though, yes you can call it a rogue/mage hybrid.

oh thanks i hadn't realised Dorian makes mention of sera and her tempest skills.

I freaking love the Tempest specialisation. Who needs to be born a mage when you can just smash a flask?

;)

You should change your name to TheTempestGuy...

Technology > magic.

Its Alchemical.. The flasks, are concoctions made from items, and stated that you cover your body in flame retardent coatings, etc..

You also have a conversation With Iron Bull about why Qunari dont use it, and how close we are to discovering their powder..

Read Sera's journal (when you're creating the flask quest) and it also has some explanation. As well as the teacher himself

I actually prefer to think of the tempest as a Rogue/Warrior. You get a taunt skill and 2 ways to punish melee attackers, and you're the only rogue spec with no stealth upgrades. I would say that the artificer, with teleportation and elemental damage, feels more like a rogue/mage.

For fun, you can break down all 3 classes this way.

Champion: Warrior/Warrior. You get another taunt and a guard bonus, plus a focus skill that gives more taunt and guard.

Reaver: Warrior/Rogue. You trade out your defense for massive damage.

Templar: Warrior/Mage. You get an eldritch detonator, and Rally is a lot like Barrier. Plus, you know, you literally have supernatural powers.

Tempest: Rogue/Warrior

Assassin: Rogue/Rogue

Artificer: Rogue/Mage

Necromancer: Mage/Warrior. You can use panics in place of taunts to control enemy aggro. You can self-heal, you don't care if you die, and your damage is non-elemental. With damage over time skills, you focus on wearing the enemy down, not bursting them.

Knight-Enchanter: Mage/Rogue. Your best defense tool is an active dodge, you have huge single-target burst, and you're the only mage who can really use flank damage.

Rift Mage: Mage/Mage. Massive free mana and a crowd-control bonus let you make full use of the base mage spells, plus you get multiple new control spells.
