Cullen was originally intended to be a bi romance option.

Kaidan said some pretty...unusual things, let's say, for a straight male. Such as telling a male Shepard that losing him 'felt like losing an arm.'

Not that it's super relevant, since Cullen's confirmed as straight, so this thread is a moot point.  But I read Kaidan as bisexual from the opening mission in ME.  I've always thought that he was written and acted to have had crazy sexual tension with maleShep.  The fact that he does that sexy turn-and-wipe-brow move when you talk to him regardless of gender; the looks that they give each other in that animation; the fact that, if you didn't romance anyone in ME as a male, he's the one that you get in the opening scene for ME2; the aforementioned "losing you was like losing a limb" dialogue.  To me, it would have been more out of character for my maleShep to not be able to romance him in ME3, after finally reuniting with him.  Having a crush on a girl 10 years earlier isn't enough "evidence" to prove he's straight and not bisexual.  I guess it's likely that they intended him to be straight in ME, but it's vague enough that thinking of him as bisexual the whole time isn't a stretch in any way.

Poor Ashley, she will forever be the girl I let die for not being a hot guy (who might be into guys.......).   Good thing Kaidan actually was bi because otherwise that would have been a huge "my bad" on my part, huh?........ ;)

I'm glad I'm not the only person who sees some sexual energy between Kaidan and maleShep in ME1.

Anyway, everyone's aware that people can participate in this discussion without actually being upset about Cullen's orientation, right?  I joined in on this discussion because, had Cullen happened to have been made bisexual in Inquisition, I don't think that it would have been a violation of his character.  For me, this topic is more about why it would not have been a retconn if he had been made bisexual rather than whether or not that should or should not have been done.  I'm not calling the fact that he is straight into question.

"Was considered possibly bisexual by writers" doesn't mean "was bisexual". The characters are not fully actualised humans with independent thought- the writers decide that.

It wouldn't be realistic if there were no straight people in the story.

I think pretty much everyone agrees with this statement, no?  Even the people who want all of the LI's to be bisexual don't want every single person in the story to be bisexual.  Also, if Cullen were bisexual, there'd still be three straight LI's, as well as Varric and Vivienne (although, I guess we're not sure on them, even though both have been in serious long-term o/s relationships with no mention of s/s relationships).

My bf hated Ash, and was all too happy when he discovered that he could kill her. He always strangely finds some innocuous character to despise. In DAI, it was Josephine.

You know what would of changed if he was bisexual? Nothing. It's the same guy.. sexual orientation is a superficial quality that doesn't affect a character's core personality and-

Know what nevermind I give up.

Wait are you suggesting that people should be defined by their sexual orientation? Isn't that obviously wrong?

Not wholly, obviously. But having it at least play a part is inescapable.

I already knew you were going to say that actually... I don't know why I bothered. If you want to sit on the sidelines that's fine, you have every right to be there.

I'll just not be on the sidelines and make clear that I believe Cullen's sexuality, bi, straight, or otherwise is of absolutely no consequence to enjoyment of his character, so whatever he was originally intended to be, he will always be Cullen.

Unless they had originally intended to write him as a misanthropic fallen Paladin in which case I'd be like whoa interesting, or something substantive.

In a banter with Dorian Varric stated that he isn't into man. Can't remember the exact words, but it was something like after a few comparing and similiriarity between them, Dorian asked if he was into man too (veiled question), and Varric stating that they wheren't so similar, after all...

It's been quite a bit, so I don't remember very well.

Wow ok, so i got up this morning to find a delightful (note: sarcasm!) message on tumblr stating that some poor sod is currently on the receiving end of a load of anon hate mail suggesting he kill himself. He is also being labelled as homphobic/biphobic. Whats he done to garner such a vicious attack? He stated that he doesn't share the 'bisexual cullen' headcannon, thats all.

So now its death-threats for not agreeing with headcannons..... stay classy fandom :?

It really sucks. I've been waiting for a classically handsome knightly male to romance on a male character since DA:O. We didn't get Alistair in the base game as a romance option for men. I shrugged it off. DA2 arrived and then despite almost every other male character being bisexual...Sebastian - who just so happened to be the most classically handsome of the lot - wasn't.

I shrugged that off and perked up when I saw Cullen for the first time. Yet as had become predictable the classically handsome male was - once again - limited only to female characters as a romance option.

The cynic in me believes it was done to appease the vocal fans and cult he's attracted. The voice work and everything else was done and then mysteriously vanishes just before the game launches coinciding with the unprecedented popularity that he gained among straight female gamers? I don't buy it.

The best compromise would be for every major character to be 'playersexual' and adjust to the player characters sexuality/attempts at seducing them. Everybody wins.

Yeah....Dragon Age Confessions received a troll post about Cullen being free from the chains of heterosexuality.    As mean and rotten a great many straight people can be there are some equally horrible people on the other side as well.
