Cullen was originally intended to be a bi romance option.

The best compromise would be for every major character to be 'playersexual' and adjust to the player characters sexuality/attempts at seducing them. Everybody wins.

Only if DA was a dating sim and I bet even then some people would find it problematic.

People's immersion would be broken. Mine would. (Semi-serious.)

Wow ok, so i got up this morning to find a delightful (note: sarcasm!) message on tumblr stating that some poor sod is currently on the receiving end of a load of anon hate mail suggesting he kill himself. He is also being labelled as homphobic/biphobic. Whats he done to garner such a vicious attack? He stated that he doesn't share the 'bisexual cullen' headcannon, thats all.

So now its death-threats for not agreeing with headcannons..... stay classy fandom :?

I thought harassing someone for a mod was bad enough but if disagreeing with other players' personal canons leads to such badness now than we have truly reached a low point.

It really sucks. I've been waiting for a classically handsome knightly male to romance on a male character since DA:O. We didn't get Alistair in the base game as a romance option for men. I shrugged it off. DA2 arrived and then despite almost every other male character being bisexual...Sebastian - who just so happened to be the most classically handsome of the lot - wasn't.

I shrugged that off and perked up when I saw Cullen for the first time. Yet as had become predictable the classically handsome male was - once again - limited only to female characters as a romance option.

The cynic in me believes it was done to appease the vocal fans and cult he's attracted. The voice work and everything else was done and then mysteriously vanishes just before the game launches coinciding with the unprecedented popularity that he gained among straight female gamers? I don't buy it.

Biower pls. It's you and your fans fault!

I even said the same thing would happen on the other side because of blatant double standard

Are you kidding me? We've gone from "Three hidden lines of dialogue indicate that BioWare considered making this previously metagame-straight character a love interest for both male and female PCs; a tweet from a QA person said time constraints on cinematics were the reason he was left straight and some vague comments from the writers indicate that story might also have played a role" to "I don't buy that they didn't invest tremendous resources to make the whole m/m Cullen romance and then delete it at the last second because the straight girls made them"?

Nearly every woman on the Cullen thread, myself included, would have been very happy for our male and genderqueer fandom friends if it had happened. And I suspect the tumblr majority would have been elated. You have every right to be disappointed that they decided to cut it, but FFS don't blame it on his fanbase.

IMHO, Bioware needs to stop writing romances.  For goodness sake it's obvious not everyone is going to be happy and some get down right nasty about it.  It causes way too much angst.  They keep getting flack for all this stuff it's probably going to end up that way anyway.  I wouldn't blame them at all and would welcome it if they would stop the madness.

Personally, I enjoy the romance elements of Bioware games and would be disappointed to lose them.  It adds another level of interaction to companion relationships, which is where BW shines.

And honestly, I think that if they did remove the romances entirely, people would complain about that, and further, they'd find other things to complain about as well - weapon options, animation, hairdos, open world vs. scripted narrower zones, day/night cycle, companion personalities, ability or inability to murderknife everyone, monster variety, plot length, resources spent on single player vs. multiplayer, voice acting, 'dumbing down' combat, complicated systems, RNG, crafting...it's not like there haven't been complaints (and praise) about all these things and more.

Bottom line, when you're aiming at or attracting a wide variety of people and demographics, there is never, ever going to be a way to make each and every one completely happy, because we all want different things.  And that's ok.

The ME romances were well done, and there wasn't quite this much angst. I'm not sure what changed with Dragon Age, but it could be that the writers for ME are just better at writing romances.

Romances and Characters are one of the things BW does right, so what if some people complain about them, people complain period.

If nothing else I would like for romances to be more developed and for BW branch more into other dynamic relationships like say friendship as well. Would make the whole story better.

Toxic fanbase.

Unrealistic . I would rather there be no LIs at all then to have all of the characters be playersexual . People have got to get this through their thick skulls that they can't always get what they want.

Bioware is going to write the romances they want to write, and you either like them or you don't. You can always politely express what kind of romances you'd like to see in the next game, they do listen; maybe with enough fan feedback they'll see if they can make it work.

There are some fans who go over the top (that "Cassandra- and-Josephine-look-like-men" guy bugging David Gaider comes to mind), and there are always going to be people out there who criticize and complain, it's just what happens when you're exposed to the wider world on the internet. Especially in matters of love and sex! When approaching feedback you gotta separate the wheat from the chaff and keep to the direction you feel is right. Romance is not only something Bioware does right, they keep getting better and better at it, no reason to stop now.

Yes. People need to admit it....they want to romance who they want...they want the writers to sacrifice their creativity and create the characters they want them to be.   I can't believe how some people hate on Dorian and demand more.  He's a fantastic character the way he is. They are all fantastic the way they are. If a person can't romance them...the writers should be blamed.

They don't listen to people politely expressing their opinions and desires on the romance front. They only listen to what they want to hear.

Just because they don't act on it in the next game doesn't mean they aren't listening

Not this again.

And I am VERY glad they went this route with Cullen. Him being bi, just does not fit his character.

No.

There is absolutely no reason why a guy like Cullen could not be bisexual or gay.

I am not saying that Cullen *should* have been Bisexual at this point. What's done is done. All I'm saying is that bisexual and gay people are just as varied as straight people. So saying that it "does not fit" is BS.

I'm pretty sure Cullen's presence in DAI as a romance option means they do listen to some extent.
